air/hotel pkg?

very new to vegas and online booking-- will need two rooms under $100 for 2 nights and 2 days-- is it best to look for ind. hotels or combo with air?

 

Do you have players card for certain casinos from your 1st trip where you could sign on & see if you have any offers or reduced rates? That usually makes a trip a little cheaper. Not sure where you will be coming from or what area you prefer but also check out the "vacation" option on the carrier. That is sometimes cheaper for someone who does not get comped rooms. Also - when are you going? Summer offers some really cheap rates at most places. I've seen $49 - $59 at places like Bally's, Flamingo, Planet Hollywood, Monte Carlo..... several options for the summer months. Also saw that Cirque shows are again offer the $55 shows for the summer. Good luck!

 

Depending on where you are flying from some really good deals on Southwest vacation for strip hotel/flight combos right now.

 

I second this - I know Southwest has a partnership with at least some MGM properties for deals that are definitely better than booking the two seperately. Check it out by going through your airlines or look at the pages of the hotels you're interested in and then compare rates.

I was actually planning on doing this for a trip I'm taking in late July, but the deal for the Luxor only applied to a few non-direct flight (and at certain times), and saving $65 wasn't worth 2 additional hours in the air and about 7 less in Vegas.

 

Thins, when are you going this summer? As the summer heats up, the prices usually go down. My suggested course of action:

1, Check your dates of travel on the the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority convention calendar:

If nothing big is going to be in town for the dates you traveling then you can count on good summer discounts on rooms.

2, Find the best room for the best price, given your specific needs. First trip usually means a center-strip property. Watch out for resort fees. A nicely priced room at TI can actually cost more than another property without resort fees.

3, Keep checking back as your trip draws near. You can cancel and get your first night deposit up to 48 hours at most hotels. Use the Vegas Message Board thread on hotel deals/codes for ideas.

The problm with booking a room at SWA is that you are stuck to the room and price...

 

Separate is best.
Combo is best.

Sometimes. The point is, there are as many good examples for either way. Just start looking at what you can find on travel sites and directly on the airline and hotel site.

The one disadvantage of doing a combo is that you can not cancel half of it when you find a better deal.

And, but the way, you are going for 2 nights, which is usually considered as three days, not two. All hotels book by the night (not days). Meaning, if you stay Tues and Wed night, you are also there Tues Day, Wed Day and Thur Day.

 

Surf the hotels and get on their e-mail list.
You may find some offers that end up being cheaper than purchasing a combo.

If you have no offers then it could possibly be cheaper. Comparison shopping is the only way to know for sure.

 

I was gonna say this as well, also follow the hotels on facebook. You'll get e-mails with codes for special rates. Today I saw Ballys/PH was offering up to 30% off on their FB wall.

understand to watch for early checkin fees and resort fees-- how do you get around this?

I think for a relative newbie to Vegas, it can be done many ways, but you need to put in some investigative work first. Check out a combo price from 2 or 3 airlines ... check out a combo price from a travel agency ... and, you should always use the power of the internet to check out separate air fares, as well as Vegas hotel sites for room prices. There can be vast price differences in those various types of independent searches.

One piece of info for anybody doing a hotel/air combo ... If you are planning to gamble a lot, you will not be able to request a room comp after the fact, as you already paid for it through a 3rd party.
