Is it safe to assume that nothing much has changed recently at South Point?

During that period, in past years, most drinks at every bar are $2.00 and half that if you have a card. Zenshin has always kept their hours, but you do have to check on the others as some will be closed on some days (as mentioned above). The best thing about the last two weeks of December, which probably won't apply for you, is that you can use your club points for whatever goods, services or food that you want for 50%. That is, if you spend $100 in the gift shop, they only take $50 in points. We load up on liquor and wine in this period.

IIRC, I was shooting the breeze late last year, with a super regular local at grandview VP, he got smokes comped, I got denied, I think he mentioned they tightened up and may check your earned points- I had just started - did seem easier to do at tables, after being there a while..

Was this earned points for the day or total earned points? BTW, I have the best luck at Grandview bar VP. Don't know what it is about that particular spot because I do play the sports bar and the Island bar. Never have played at the Silverado bar though.

I just checked the website, and the buffet went up since December (maybe a buck or two). Still nice that they have one.

Looks like that was sometime in March. According to the LVA "South Point has raised some prices by $1-$2; the breakfast buffet remains unchanged at $14.95 with a club card."

I have read there are multiple Pai Gow tables at South Point and some as low as $10. Does anyone know if they are face up or the original Fortune Pai Gow tables? I am heading out for 3 days in May staying at South Point and am not a fan of the face up game.

Last time I was there (in October) they were 100% face-up.

Just returned from a Monday-Friday stay at South Point. This is the first time we've stayed there rather than the Grandview across the street. Combined my wife's monthly two free weeknight offers to cover the stay. Good thing, because we've never seen the place so busy except maybe for the first rounds of March Madness. It was nuts. All casino hotels in Vegas should study South Point to see how they do it. There was a huge bowling tournament, a Towing Industry convention, and a five-day radio controlled car competition. By Friday the Derby crowd was showing up. The Race Book was full to overflowing, and there's a ballroom viewing party today (Saturday).

No horse events, so the smaller arena was the location of the RC car competition. Sounds like a silly event, but it was actually pretty interesting. Turns out it's the largest global competition, with almost 1300 entrants. Electric and nitro cars, four competition categories. We watched it for awhile several times and talked to competitors, mostly males 20s to 40s and happy to share their enthusiasm. The course was a dirt track occupying most of the arena with lots of tight turn, bumps and topography. The nitro cars sounded like a loud hive of angry bees and kicked up a lot of dust.

The casino was busy every day, morning, noon and night. I was only able to get a seat at the lone $5 blackjack table once in five days. Bar seats were also at a premium regardless of the hour. That was OK, because we had a great time with VP on the floor. Never had aces kicker or a royal, but between us we had over 40 quads, a number of them $200 DDB quads. Finished the five days up a bit over $500 despite the lack of mega hands. We never got much of a chance to play for the progressive. Monday evening when we arrived it was a bit over $1800, so we sat down to play but within ten minutes someone hit it. The next four days I never saw it reach much above $1400 due to so many people playing at the bars all the time. Drink service on the floor was good once a server found us, but it sometimes took awhile to get an order because it was so busy.

Our room was on the 24th floor and was great. SP has huge rooms with niceties like slippers and toiletries good enough to bring home. Maid service is daily with fresh towels and bedding if you choose. Though the hotel was full (they claimed), we didn't hear our neighbors. Just the usual slamming doors and occasional talking of people in the hallway. Wednesday two or three elevators (there are six) were out of order and lines got quite long at times. Other days it wasn't an issue. Our room looked west over the pool. We only visited the pool once. It opens at 10 am but after 11 there's very little shade. It closes at 6 pm, which seems too early.

We ate at Don Vito's, Primarily Prime Rib, the Coronado Cafe, and had the breakfast and lunch buffets. Prices continue to creep up (e.g., the breakfast buffet is now $14.95 for members), but the food is still excellent in the restaurants and the buffet above average (at least by our non-foody standards). It's all still a very good value. Yesterday is Seafood Buffet night, $46.95 for members. It opens at 3 pm. We had to leave for the airport at 3:30, but people were lining up for the buffet at 1:30. They even brought their own folding stools! We talked to a few waiting in line. Mostly locals for whom it's a weekly, monthly, or whatever event. They consider it a real bargain.

South Point provides a free shuttle to and from the airport. We used it coming and going. We made reservations both times and were glad we did, because it was full and coming from the airport they turned away people without them. The schedule is available on their website. It was on time both ways for us.

The "bottom line" is that SP continues to be our first (and only) choice, whether staying there or at the Grandview. We didn't leave the property for our entire stay. I sure hope they keep it up. The success of their formula is evident in the crowds. My only complaint is that the place has maybe become too popular.

@marksind Sounds like when I was there the end of January. They were having an archery competition and the place was packed. I was going be sure to check what was going on before I stayed there again so hopefully I didn't pick such a busy time. Truthfully, I doubt that's ever going to happen. They seem to always have something going on. If I have any room comps when the September offers come out I'll be there!

Thank you for a great TR. I had a visual on everything you described, and really wanted to be there myself. My next visit begins in the middle of June for 3 nights, and really looking forward to it. Thanks again!!

That's the way it's been the last two years I've stayed there. Extremely crowded in the casino and nearly impossible to find a seat at any bar. Last year, I didn't sit at any bar for the entire time I was there because there was never a seat open.

"All casino hotels in Vegas should study South Point to see how they do it."

Why would they? Other casinos have no interest in offering any value whatsoever because they're happy gouging the tourists who obviously don't care.

"The casino was busy every day, morning, noon and night."

    No surprise to me.

The dining is definitely a good value. I'll be trying Don Vito's on my August trip.

I spoke with the food and beverage manager last year and he told me the buffet loses a huge amount of money, but Michael Gaughn believes loss leaders like the buffet bring in more people who will drink and gamble.

No $1.50 hotdogs for you? Those are fantastic.

Locals know where the bargains are located that's why they swarm the casino and restaurants at all hours of the day.

Exactly my sentiments. While I leave the property each day to sight-see on the Strip and downtown, the vast majority of my play and dining are at South Point.

"My only complaint is that the place has maybe become too popular."

A legitimate concern I share. There's never a downtime there.

    vegasvp,

Yes, we did enjoy a hot dog over the course of our stay. I was surprised that we hit up the cart only once, and for only one hot dog apiece. Probably because I never drank enough to crave another dog. Lack of bar seating and slower floor service limited my consumption. Also took advantage of the Steak and Shake milkshake happy hour, but never ate there, something we typically do when we're across the street at the Grandview for a week. The days seemed to go by quickly despite never leaving the property. I'd definitely stay there again for trips shorter than a week. Because they seem to rate on win/loss rather than play I'm afraid our offers may end. Mine ended after I hit the progressive royal last September, so we just played on my wife's card this trip. But having finished up this trip hers may well end too.

I've never received an offer from South Point, but have found it easy to get room comps at the end of my stay.
As long as that continues it will be my home casino.

I plan on asking for a comp on my last night, six of us at Silverado. We'll see if I can get enough play in to justify that. They're already giving me a suite plus an extra room. Time to rack up some points....

I will be bowling there later this week, and will very likely hit the poker room for a few tournaments before I leave, too.

I’ll be there in a few weeks and I’ll be doing a Live TR with “boots on the ground” info. If anyone has anything that you’d like to know about at SP feel free to hit me up in my TR…
