Just curious, it seems to be a nice way to enjoy the table without throwing hundreds a roll out there. Usually invest 25-50 per. Obviously have lost my ass but have also 32x.

Because you're playing a high(ish) house edge bet (2.78% if its triple on the 2 or 12, 5.56% if its only double on both). It also resolves every roll, whereas placing numbers doesn't resolve every roll.

I wouldn't say you're a "square" for betting it though.

I've never heard of it being called a square bet, but I guess it is. If the table is paytriple, as CVP mentioned, the HA is about the same as a single zero roulette wheel. So, its hardly the worst bet in the house (or even close to the worst bet at craps). But its not a great wager either

Yes I play the triple 2,12 at a local(Philadelphia, MS) and the double at Beau Rivage.

Wait, is it triple on both the 2 AND the 12?

If so, that's 0 house edge...

Yeah, I assume he meant the 12 pays triple. No table offers both

If you’re looking for triple 2 and 12 you may want to call up the Sandia casino and Santa Ana Star casino. Both in NM. Believe the Santa Ana also never charged a vig on buying the 4 and 10 so that would have been a 0% house edge bet as well. This was years ago though. They may have changed it since. There was a place in Michigan that offered one of these 0% house edge bets but I forget the casino name.

As TF noted, with pay triple on 2 or 12, the house edge on the field isn't terrible. As CVP noted, however, the real problem is how quickly the bet resolves. The house edge is about the same as a single-zero roulette wheel (again, assuming pay triple), but whereas you'll probably only have 20-30 spins per hour at a busy roulette table, you could easily resolve 100-200 field bets per hour. The long run will come very quickly in the field.

I think for many field bettors, the fact that it resolves in one throw is a benefit, not a problem! ;)

Like @Dory364 mentioned, I have heard tales of the occasional table that pays triple on both the 2 and the 12, but have never seen one in person. Not the first time I played craps, but when I was still a young'un, I got into betting the field during a visit to the newly-opened Harrah's Shreveport. With all those numbers and some paying double and even triple, I was convinced that it was a good bet for the player. I actually remember thinking it may be +EV ! I had to write a program on the computer when I got home to prove myself wrong!

The field seems to be a popular "hit and run" bet for some. I have seen people walk up and put hundreds on it for one roll or maybe a couple, and then leave.

As mentioned by "vegaskid74", it resolves too quickly and often for me to regularly bet it. I sometimes bet it on a good roll when placing a come bet and use the winnings for odds on that bet or to replace it when a craps number hits. I know it isn't "the best" bet but I like to take a few more chances when my chip stack is building quickly.

I beg to differ. Earl’s Casino occasionally offers this on my kitchen countertop

Wouldn’t call it square , but you miss out on hot rolls that could be pressed. Playing the numbers.

I use it in moderation. Usually when I feel like getting out of my basic pass line & odds & place 6/8 and do an Iron Cross or something to mix it up. Sometimes I like having action on each roll. Do what you want and what you're comfortable with.

Playing the field once in a while provides the entertainment I'm looking for when playing craps.

This is how I learned to play craps. First time playing I turned $500 into a $7500 run. Lost it all. Lol. I don’t play it now until I’m on a streak.

There is no right or wrong in craps….

The "squares" part is interesting to me. It suggests the existence of a "cool" gambler, surrounded by all the sexiest people, playing ____________?

What game do hot and popular people play (asking for a friend)?

also a little extra action if you happen to have every number pressed, and heavy.

IHMO, I think it's square, as opposed to "sharp", ie the boring (& often cranky) low HA bet players.

Likely, especially if that's the only bet being played... I might add annoying if the square late bets every time...

I hear the word “square” and it reminds me of that 80s show Square Pegs. Of which I don’t remember squat…
