Yes. If you're expecting literally anything more than a bed and a shower, I'd suggest upgrading or choosing a different hotel. If you're paying, you will get a much better bang for your buck at any other casino/hotel downtown.

On our last trip we double dipped. We were staying at the Golden Nugget but wanted to use the Circa pool at night so we used a Sun to Thur offer from Golden Gate for two nights. We were able to get free Circa Swim access. We did however walk up to the room to run the shower for a minute, pull the toilet paper, mess up the comforter and leave the television on but not loud to give it that lived in look. We also left $5.00 for the housekeeping. I was horrified at the room, the windows were on the ceiling like you were in a prison and it was older than old and no direct AC. It may have been clean I don't care because the cavernous hallways with 80 year old carpet gave you the preview of what was to come. I would never stay there unless they have some type of new rooms. It seriously makes Four Queens look like the Aria. Nice casino, little sportsbook, fun VP and most table games but hard pass on the hotel.

I went there in December. Golden Gate was on my "bucket list". I'm glad that I crossed it off during the winter. Cold I can deal with, but the standard rooms do not have AC or heat. My window looked out at the Slotzilla depot.

Absolute hard pass in this 110+ degree weather without direct AC controls.

I have stayed in a suite.
No way I would ever stay in one of the original rooms.

Suites are the only room I'd recommend at GG. Even then their suite is a regular strip level room.

I forgot to mention this, Golden Gate has a 'hidden' room type that is almost a hybrid between a regular room and their suite that they call the "deluxe" room. There are only a few of them and it's the room right off the elevator. They were built with the suites, so they have their own AC and a newer bathroom and the upgrade is less than a suite. I believe these rooms are only bookable by calling. Here are some photos: https://www.oyster.com/las-vegas/hotels/golden-gate-hotel-and-casino/photos/deluxe-room/

They also have another room type that they will offer to people if they are really busy. It amounts to an oversized closet with a single bed. If you agree to take it they will give $25 per day in free play or something like that.

Just a update on my Original 10 rooms stay.
The rooms are nice and have been updated since I was there last time.
Clean and the air-conditioning was fine.
Its like a 2 min walk from the casino floor.
