In these casinos, nothing is accidental - room setup, arrangement of slots and tables, music, colors, odors, etc. The big companies spend millions of dollars each year investigating the impact of all these factors on visitors.

The exploit all aspects of human nature, self-esteem being one of those ...

    "I don't have low self-esteem, I just have low esteem for everyone else." :) :) :)

The casinos know beer goggles start after what 2-3 beers and the prescription gets stronger with each beer.
The more mirrors the more one drinks to get themselves (and others) closer to being a 10.
The more one drinks the more one gambles.
So its a combination of the mirrors and alcohol which transform to profits.

After exploiting the lack of self-esteem they go after everyone's intelligence by charging a Resort Feed. :wink2:

Funny thing - When I look in a mirror, I think I'm around mid 40's. When I see a photo of myself, I think I'm a craggy old fart.

There's a camera behind every mirror.

Any situation that provides some cachet to spending more money than you reasonably should, or otherwise appealing to your vanity for something you may regret later, is probably preying on your lack of self esteem or insecurity to some extent, either directly or indirectly.

When a casino treats someone who drops $50,000 in a weekend to a limo ride, a suite, and personal escorts to dinner, are they appealing to that person's lack of self esteem? It's a complicated question that depends on why that person was playing at such a level in the first place, and whether they would have played at that level if the comps hadn't been involved, or if they would have enjoyed the comps as much in complete private without the visibility of others seeing them enjoy it, be it in person, or via live-tweeting or trip reporting.

It probably varies from person to person, but I'd have a difficult time agreeing with someone who said that self esteem would never be involved with anyone who played that way and received such treatment.

This certainly isn't limited to the casino business. It's a central form of just about any kind of advertising and indeed explains (accurately or otherwise) many motivations for all kinds of behavior.

I would think that if you don't like looking at yourself in the mirror, the best thing they could do would be to either have mirrors that make you look taller and thinner (assuming that would help), or not having mirrors at all. I always assumed the mirrors were to make the place feel like a maze and make it very hard to find the exit, so you don't bother trying to leave and stay until you run out of money.

This could be a big difference between casinos in the US and Asia.
Asian casinos don't have many mirrors around gaming tables. It is considered bad feng shui.

Gambling is considered a vice by many in North America, and people are less comfortable seeing themselves taking part is such an activity.
It could make people feel guilty and more likely to leave the table.

I can't believe this is the case in Asian cultures as gambling is generally very accepted, but people still don't like to watch themselves do it.

I will have to look for them in the casino and in common areas. But in a hotel room, hallway, and elevator, these have saved me from embarrassment. Such as my fly being down, collar buttons unfastened, store tags on clothing. I think I last used a comb or brush in 1998, so I got that going for me.

But as we all get older, we look better with clothing than without, so just avert your gaze. You'll feel better about yourself and it improves your self esteem.

Breeze, your line cracked me up, a real LOL.

I know... I do that too! Sometimes I do have to stop and do the "Funky Cold Medina Dance"... but that's just me? Love mirrors in casinos!

Ah, maybe that's why they keep playing that stupid rap music at 24 hr fitness and that they blast their music all over so you have to wear earplugs because it is so irritating. No wonder I want to try to work out as fast as I can and get out of the place. I didn't realize that they are doing that to get people to work out faster and get out of the gym.

Id have to agree. I remeber my first trip, we were all 22ish, and I think all of us brought new outfits just for vegas. You get clothes fitted too. You look your best and wear your best.

I mean, these girls are doing their makeup and hair now with $100+ swimwear(two pieces of string) just to go get drunk at the pool.

Some of us have been going to vegas for years, and this has wore off, we might not always think like this.

I never really thought about too many mirrors in vegas.. Only really noticed extra mirrors waiting for elevators or inside. Always thought it was very convenient time to check my tie/belt while waiting for the elevator.
