Table Games Playing Craps

What is the safest bet to place while learning to play craps? Any additional information on the game would be great as well.

 

Pass line. Add the odds if your bankroll will accommodate it.

You could just as easily do Don't Pass. But that will put you on the other side of the bets that most folks on the table are making. So I wouldn't do it until you're more comfortable with the game (or if you don't want to interact with the others).

 

Don't pass is best, but most beginners like to play the way most people are playing, so Pass is fine. Just put the table minimum on the pass line, and maybe back it up with $10 in odds, and watch for a while. Also there's a sticky thread about craps at the top of the forum.

 

Pass with odds for one or two go arounds and just watch the game and learn the pace of it. Maybe place one number after the third go at it. Know your payoffs, try to play with either somewhat seasoned players or crew. They will give you pointers in downtime. If you're on a table with a bunch of newbies your first time, crew and players, you'll end up not liking the game. Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the local are the worst if one table is open, as that's when they train new dealers. That said, once you get a handle of the game, going to a table where they're training dealers lets you work out the kinks in getting your bets out there, so when you're at a hoppin' table, you won't get lost in the sauce.

Many casinos offer lessons in craps, in the pre-noon hours. Maybe try that out, to get a feel for the hands-on experience, too.

 

The best thing to do is like porkchop said - attend the free craps lessons at whichever hotel you're staying at. Most are between 10-11am.

In addition to that I would buy a craps book and download the Ahh Craps! app on your phone (if you have an iPhone). That way you can practice on the app what you read in the book.

Don't be intimidated by the table - it can look insane but just let the dealers know you're new and they'll help you out

 

My wife plays the pass line only. She'll play a $5 bet on the pass line, and if the point is 6 or 8, play $5 odds. Otherwise she doesn't bet. She enjoys herself, gets to play for a long period of time on a small bankroll, and still gets free drinks. Plus it's a great way to learn the game while playing, without risking a ton of money.

 

MAYBE = free odds IS the best bet in the casino.

 

One suggestion is to buy-in with just $100 (or less) and slooooooow play.
With little cash you tend to get hassled less for not doing max bet.

When tossing the dice just bet the minimum on the Pass without odds or 1x odds.

When not tossing maybe bet $1 on the hard 6 & 8.

If you are at an empty table the dealers will usually be happy to help.
Definitely take advantage of any lessons.

Watch the player next to you and once they make a bet just ask "What type of bet is that?".
Most craps players are very social. In fact, you will probably have trouble getting them to shut up.

Keep in mind, your objective is to maximum play and this will do it. Its not the smartest way to play but when first starting out its best to leave the table wishing you bet/won more rather than wishing you slowed down.
After all, not matter how much you bet you always leave the table wishing you bet/won more.

 

For sure pass line plus odds. I'm also a don't player but for a first timer I recommend watching a few YouTube videos. I watched the wizard of odds guy explain the game prior to my first trip and it was so awesome. Crack a beer and watch them.
