First trip tips

Making my first trip to Vegas. It will be me and my fiance. What are some of the most see and do items and what should we avoid. Tips for getting around and getting the best deals? We are booked for February 18 til 21st staying at the Delano in a panoramic suite.

Welcome to the forum...you'll find a ton of info and advice here. Its a great community.

I have been ten times and still have not done or seen everything that there is to do and see.

Sign up for the players clubs online (MLife, Total Rewards, Grazie, Wynn Red Card, etc) and you will be able to see some benefits. Since you're a first timer it'll probably be discounted shows or meals and things like that.

Take comfortable shoes and don't be fooled by the optical illusion that everything is close. My girlfriend paid that price our first two trips when she got blisters like crazy.

I don't rent cars while I am there but some do. Taxi's can get expensive if you use them all the time - so a rental car or the buses are good alternatives.

If you gamble and are signed up for the players clubs then you can ask for things to be comped at the end of your stay. Don't play for comps though - just bet like you normally bet and then stop by the MLife desk before checking out to see if they can remove some charges.

The main thing is to have fun, so much to see, don't expect to see everything on your 1st visit, this year will be our 24 year of going to Vegas, love it as much now as we did 24 years ago, still get excited every year. Make sure you see the fountains at Bellagio, they are beautiful, we used to walk the strip and stop it at every casino, now we tend to take the bus more, must be old age, lol. Two pairs of shoes are a must. Enjoy

Welcome to the forum. Its basically what the other 2 said, but thought I would contribute.

I think a lot of people would need to know more about you and your SO, as in age, your first time but is it hers? what you guys like most (as in food or attractions)

 

Know that it take way longer than planned to do everything in Vegas. It is truely a time warp, so don't overplan. Do, at least one show, one good dinner and one block of time to do nothing but relax.

Stay hydrated...........it's the middle of the desert even though you don't see it. I will always mention comfortable shoes too, If I am casino hopping I wear my light hiking boots actually.

Thanks guys we are both 25 I know one night we want to go out and party (plan on that being the Friday before we leave) then I know we want to hit a few restaurants. She wants to zip line. Do the High Roller ride. I know we plan to do a little bit of slots not much.

 

Initiate the bed with the drapes open.

 

Don't rent a car. Even if one or both of you don't drink, you still don't want that hassle on your first trip.
Take cabs. Budget about $200 for cabs & you should be ok. Study a street map of Vegas... at least you'll have some inkiling if you're being long-hauled.
First trip? Whatever you're planning to budget for gambling, double that... at least! You want to be prepared, and definitely do NOT want to run out of cash with days left on your trip!
Must see things?
OK... Fremont Street downtown. Plan on one evening/night down there! Fiance can do the the massive zipline down there.
See the fountain show (Bellagio).
Walk through the Venetian & check out the ceilings & marble. Walk through Caesar's... well, simply because it's the last remaining 'definition' of 'Strip' old-school.
The rides at Stratosphere could be fun. Check that out.
I'm old, so I can't speak to the nightlife stuff, but plenty of folks here can do that.

Do more than just play slots! Have some fun with a few table games! Don't let them intimidate you! Step right up...with the exception of a busy crap table, almost every other table game will be patient with you as you get your bearings.

For 3 nights...two of you? I'd suggest at least $2000 for gambling... and that's if you're going to stick with low-limits...$5 & $10 tables.
"Free" drinks while gambling? Well, yeah...sort of...plan on tipping $1 for each delivered cocktail.
Don't worry about comps or ratings...yet!. But, be sure to get a player's card from the casinos where you gamble... all of them. (Bear in mind that the 'CET' card & MGM card are good at a lot of places on the strip... they & Wynn own just about everything.)

Do not fall for time-share salesmen. They're everywhere! Just do not respond to them & keep on walking. They will make what seems to be really great offers to you in exchange for listening to their sales pitch. Do NOT fall for it!! Be sure to warn your fiance as well.

The porn-slappers? Forget it. Just keep walking & don't take anything they try to hand you.

Bums, beggars, costumed-characters, scam artists, "entertainers", and more? Yeah - you'll see a lot of them, especially on the overpass walkways. Just keep walking & do not buy or take anything from them. As for giving to bums? That's your call...I don't...many do.

Many people smoke...even non-smokers will smoke in Vegas. Be prepared. Don't whine, nag or bitch (unless you're at a non-smoking table or bank of machines). If another player is particularly annoying, just move on... tons of other places to gamble!
Obviously, many people tend to over-drink... I know, crazy, huh? Anyway - be prepared for the typical shenanigans that alcohol can bring out in people...95% of the time, it's harmless.
Have fun. Leave some money there for me! I get there a couple of days after you leave.

 

Don't buy anything off anyone on the street or on the casino floor. Go thru the concierge if you want club tickets, guest list, show tickets, etc.

The "VIP Passes" that people have on the strip are bogus. They're hustling for a tip but the card will be basically worthless when you get to the club.

Use your players card for everything from penny slot to the blackjack table. Since you're at the Delano go to the MLIFE desk the morning of your check out but before you actually check out. Ask the boothling if there is anything they can comp off the bill based on your play. It takes all of 5 minutes to do this and they won't do it if you don't ask. If they can't help, no big deal. If you use your card everywhere you will probably see discounted or even free nights pop up via email.

There are CVS and Walgreens everywhere so if you forget something at home, don't worry. They sell liquor there too so one of my first stops when I arrive is to buy a bottle of bourbon and a tall boy of PBR for the walk back to my room. I like to have the bourbon to sip on in the room.

 

Make sure to buy a rap CD, they are amazing... :evillaugh

Seriously have comfortable shoes, walk some of the strip, drink in hand and take it all in.

Make it a point to go downtown, at night. Those lights just are amazing.

Make an itinerary of what you want to see and do it, but do not cram it with so much stuff, go with the flow of Vegas, you come home feeling like you missed out. I still do this and I am 10 trips in!

 

Rent a car. There's a lot to see around Vegas besides the strip. Go out to Hoover Dam, take the tour. Red Rock Canyon.

I advise against taking one of those Grand Canyon bus tours. You'll leave about 6 a.m., ride the bus 6 hours, spend an hour or two at the canyon tourist center, then 6 hours back. They have video movies on the bus, but it's usually family fare. The one I saw was "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." Ugh. If you have the moolah, there are some helicopter tours that are nice.

See the Titanic and The Body exhibits at Luxor. Awesome.

Don't get into gambling much, especially on your first trip. Play the penny and nickle slots, maybe some roulette or craps, depending on how much money you have to blow. Remember the cardinal rules of gambling: if you play long enough, you WILL lose your money, and never, never, NEVER keep playing to try to "win back some of your losses." NEVER. Vegas gambling isn't the fun it used to be. It's very depressing to lose $200 in a slot machine in a couple of minutes, then think of the nice dinner you could have had for that money.

Yep, what he said: buy stuff like water, shampoo, chips, etc. at the Walgreen's.

Lose weight before you go. Good food is everywhere in Vegas. Avoid cheap places.

Overall, just about everything in Vegas, especially on the strip, is very expensive. It's all "upscale," like paying $15 for a pair of socks at Saks, instead of $3 for the same pair at Walmart. If you're hot and tired and want a beer, expect to pay $6-$10 for a room temperature bottle. Many restaurants charge a "bar fee" of $10-$15 for a cocktail, which will be another $15-$20 itself. $12 for a burger, $5-$10 for fries. $25 for 2 eggs, bacon and a biscuit. Go to your Delano web site and look at their menus for some good examples. These are typical Vegas prices, unless you want the slop at Denny's. In general, if you're trying to shop around a lot and have to "count every penny," it's very difficult to enjoy Vegas.

See your first trip as a learning experience. Walk around, go in all the places, etc. and educate yourself. There's a LOT to see and learn about Vegas, and you'll spend some time planning your next trip.

Just be sure to wear sneakers or hiking boots, no sandals. Transportation to and from BC Flightlines is included in the price of the ziplines. They pick up at the Excalibur, and will return you direct to your hotel.

You can walk inside from Mandalay Bay through Luxor and then Excalibur without stepping outside. The walk takes less than 10 minutes for people with normal mobility.

One evening go up to the Foundation Room patio (on top of the Mandalay Bay tower) to enjoy the sunset and watch the neon lights on the Strip.

Tip: The timeshare salespeople are dressed like casino employees. If they walk up to you and say something like "How long are you in town?" they are not casino employees. If you don't want to be bothered by timeshare sales pitches, walk away fast and don't say anything.

If you are interested in a timeshare sales pitch or want the "free" gifts for attending a sales pitch, then plan to lose close to a whole day of your precious Vegas vacation. That's how long they will keep you, especially when you say NO and they realize you only want the freebies.

remember to eat... i'm serious... many newbies get so caught up int excitement they forget about food and water... and buy some water for your room to drink and brush your teeth with...

 

This is a step to the ridiculous. OP, the water is perfectly safe to drink, brush your teeth with, etc. Las Vegas might running out of water, but it's not unsafe. This isn't Mexico or India. But you are correct, it's really important to drink lots of water (bottled or otherwise). Even in comfortable weather, it's still very dry.

 

Pedialyte is good for hydration if you plan on getting your drink on and getting drunk and fighting the hangover the next day. It actually mixes well with vodka.
