House paint disposal? Latex vs oil based.

The accepted method to get rid of old latex paint is to take the cover off and let it dry out and turn into a hard mass. What about oil based paint? Will they dry out the same way? Except for exterior stains, I've never been a big user of oil base products, but I need to get rid of some left by the old owner of the place we bought.

 

I ended up taking mine to a recycle center. The oil separates and never dries.

 

HazMat here says to soak in sawdust; dispose in usual trash.

 

Check and see if your town/county has options for paint disposal. Some of the counties around us have a paint area at the recycling center. Others have a share/swap center (presumably they take care of getting rid of what no one else wants....)

 

We take ours to recycling when they have special Haz Mat days. For latex, there's a paint hardener that will solidify the paint so that you can dispose of it in the trash.

 

They say the quickest way to dry out the latex paint is kitty litter. Should be ready for the trash next day. Oil base has to go to recycling center here in Mass.

 

Ditto on that from Flusherville. They instruct us to mix it up with kitty litter and let it dry, then it goes in the trash. Oil based goes to hazardous waste drop-off.

 

Seriously, if you all have actual leftover paint that is still liquid - check to see if you have swaps or exchanges in your area!!

This is what we do here. There is a specific location set up to accept drop offs of paint and other "nuisance:" type materials.
