Good in theory but practically really silly since people end up breaking the solid white line and merging earlier. Or worse, they just stop in the lane prematurely to try to merge early blocking all the traffic from flowing. This will also cause more road rage if people merge at the last minute and cut someone off because people don't let you in.

Primary example: 95 Southbound to 15 South at the spaghetti bowl

Another example: 215 Eastbound to 15 North.

Another example: 15 Southbound to 215 West. mostly due to poor signage.

just my 2 cents.

Thanks for sharing this... I rarely agree with the bulk of newspaper commenters, but in this case, I think they're spot on... zippered merging makes common sense; which is exactly why it won't work!

requires significant "reeducation" of the public driving habits... or it won't work... the NV DOT has its work cut out for them...

San diegos version of this is there will be a long line of traffic in the lane to turn off. Someone will drive all the way to the front in the normal lane and then stop and force their way in. Of course, now we have 2 stopped lanes because that idiot could not play along like everyone else.

I wish the NV DOT takes a hard look at how other cities do on and off ramps. The way it is now is just poor design and totally unnecessary stress on a daily basis for 1000s of commuters. I understand why they do it this way because it is more "cost efficient" vs building an extra lane for dedicated on and off ramps... but in the long run, for a burgeoning city, it is not good transportation infrastructure IMHO...

I hate that I am so passionate about this but, the zipper WORKS. I live in Vegas but I'm from Los Angeles and have traveled around the country for many years. I travel with another girl who is from LA and we always comment on how every other state doesn't know the zipper works. I was on the 215 today and slammed on my breaks for a bus to get over because it was stopped. just zipper! Also, turn signals. It's you then me, LA is not a giving place but, it actually works.

I think it was in Colorado where I last saw it, but I don't remember them calling it zippering. I remember the "Use both lanes until merge point. Take turns at merge point." sign.

My niece is an engineer working on highway projects. She also states that zippering (didn't know the term before) is the best method. It goes against my intuition but I'll go with what the experts say.

The problem is you always have somebody who cant conform with the rest of the group. Think Black Friday. Everyone is behaving nicely and then somebody doesn't. Then, when you see that person getting an advantage everybody else wants that advantage too, and now you have chaos.

Ugh. In theory it works, but then you throw human nature in, and it can get annoying. Most play by the rules, some see it as a chance to leapfrog every person possible, often well past the merge point, sometimes even when it means passing on the shoulder just to leapfrog one or two more cars.

But, then again, there is probably NO system that can adapt to different personalities on the road! At least I now now it has a cool name. :)

Again, me with the passion, it's you me you me you me. What happens when you do this is, no one stops, traffic flows, it's barely a slow down. Zipper people! You don't have to drive on the shoulder you don't have to cut people off. Why? Because traffic does not stop when you zipper. You will only lose, at most,5 mph. Zipper! Rant over

Any method will work if everyone follows along. The reality is, that never happens.

People just don't like the idea of someone merging in front of them.

For some reason.

I don't know why.

Humans are stupid. Me included.
