High-Roller
I can’t believe it. I actually had a bad time in Vegas. If not for vegashost coming through for me, the trip would have really kinda blew.
The particants: Me (40 something married guy), T-bone (25 year-old single guy), Shyboy (27, single), collegeboy (22, dating Cutiepie) & cutiepie (22).
Okay, it took me over a week to write a report cause I’m still in shock at not having a good time.
Friday: we arrive around 9 am. I stayed at Barbary Coast. They stayed at Bally’s. They get their room right away. I have to wait till after 2 for my room to be ready. We decide to do a little sightseeing since Collegeboy has never been. The others have only been once. They were hungry and wanted to eat, so I tell them that the food court in the back of the Canal Shoppes at the Venetian is nice. We do a slow roll, stopping in at Flamingo, O’Shea’s, IP and the Coast. I, of course, have a liquid breakfast of three beers.
When we get to Venetian, I’m waiting for them to be blown away. I mean, how many places have a recreation of Italy, complete with a canal with gondolas and frescos on the ceilings? I think the most enthusiastic comment I got was “oh, that’s niceâ€.
Huh?
So we spend the rest of the day checking out different hotels, stopping twice at Casino Royale. I got some craps in. Matter of fact, I played for three hours, got up 100, left down 50. Not bad. It was fun. My biggest fun with craps is meeting people. Met some Asian dude from Cali. We were making each other laugh pretty hard.
Around 4 we went to our rooms with plans to meet back up around 8 to play some in room drinking games in preparation for going to Curve. I told them they need to pace themselves. The fun starts at nite.
I made some phone calls, watched a little TV, then got a call around 6. Apparently, they started drinking when they got back to their room and were getting hammered.
Great.
We met at 9 and decided to hang at the Aladdin. They wanted to eat again, so we went to some Mexican place there. I actually ate something with them. T-Bone and Cutiepie were both hammered. We eventually made it to Curve and they told T-Bone he couldn’t come in wearing tennis shoes. (duh…sigh) and Collegeboy was wearing Birkenstocks (grr..) and would have to change shoes also.
(I don't consider dress codes snobbery. I think it's juts a sign of a nice place. I've traveled quite a bit and didn't mind dressing nice to eat at Tavern on the Green, or going to Morton's steakhouse eher at home. I think part of appreciating the nicer things in life is the experience of dressing nice and going someplace nice.)
Their solution? Everyone decided to go to bed, since they’d burnt themselves out drinking earlier. Alright!
(groan) I told them I was hitting it, whether they went or not. Shyboy said he’d hang with me, so it was just the two of us. Long story short, we stayed up till 5 am. Curve was inexplicably quiet most of the nite. The place only half filled up. I ended the nite playing video poker at Flamingo, while Shyboy played BJ at Barbary. I wish I had one of my usual funny bar stories, but alas……
On top of it, I somehow lost 300 dollars. I think was pulling smokes outta my pocket and the bills may have caught on my pack. Great.
Saturday: T-Bone and Shyboy stayed in their rooms ALL DAY, sleeping and ordering room service. (Wha??) I got up around 2, and the rest of us swam at the Bally’s pool till 5. Did you know they have a 12 foot deep pool? I was LOVING it!!
We met up at their room around 9 and played this drinking game called “Assholeâ€. It was hilarious!! Anyone heard of this?
This time, everyone is dressed appropriately and we hit Tangerine. Dayam!! The line was HUGE, snaking through the casino. Did it matter to us? Nope! Cause vegashost got us the hookup. Immediate VIP entrance, I grease the palm of the manager and it was ON!! Within an hour, Collegeboy and Shyboy went to IP to play BJ. (??) We, on the other hand, were dancing fiends. I was dancing with three different bachelorette parties at different points. What’s the male equivalent of “belle of the ball Well, that was me.
I had more girls grabbing me to dance, or buying ME drinks. It was weird and funny and quite an ego boost.
BTW, Tangerine bumps!! Great rap/dance/top 40 music. The balcony is very cool, and like vegashost says, it’s nice to step out there and enjoy the breeze when you’re getting hot and sweaty. I had a lot of fun there. It was my only really fun nite in Vegas.
Sunday: Collegeboy and Cutiepie and I took another tour of casinos, along with downtown. Out of Ceasar’s, Bellagio, Mirage and TI, and downtown, the most I could get was for C-Boy to say that Mirage was kinda nice, although they were impressed with Ceasars.
That nite, we played “Asshole†again. (Collegeboy refused to drink much, even though it was a drinking game.) Then we hit Body English. Thanks to vegashost, we bypassed another HUGE line and were whisked right in.
Same type music as Tangerine…but better!! The crowd was definitely younger. I was a dancing fool again, but basically just danced with Cutiepie, (and a few girls there) since her man isn’t much into dancing. (Also, the bartender bought me two drinks. That NEVER happens in Vegas.) Didn’t really meet anyone, which is unusual. What was really, really cool is at certain points, they blow this mist down on the dance floor. It’s so thick, you can’t see your hand in front of you…and it’s really cool, temperature-wise. Perfect for a nice cool off when you’re tearing it up.
What sucked, is Cutiepie and Collegeboy bailed on us early again.
One other thing happened that night that I’m still getting grief about. Around 4, Shy, T and I stopped at Barbary Coast to play Wheel of Fortune. As we all sat on our chairs, I decided to swing my leg over from behind the chair, then plop down. Wrong. Soon as I started, I knew it was a bad idea. My leg caught on the chair, I lost my balance, flailed around for help, grabbing the two chairs beside me, and landed on my back, pulling the two chairs on top of me.
There was a beat of stunned silence before T cupped his hand over his mouth and says really loud “Command Post!! Blackhawk down!! I repeat, Blackhawk DOWN!!â€
Real funny. We all busted out laughing on that one.
Monday: I got a late checkout and slept till noon. Nothing eventful happened, other than on the flight back, Collegeboy kept drumming on the back of the seat of the woman in front of him, to the point that she turned around and yelled at him to stop. He could understand why she was so upset.
It was a weird trip: The guys staying in their room all day…..Collegeboy only drinking once or twice (even though he vowed to get plastered since he doesn’t get the opportunity at home)….How incredibly non-appreciative most of them were about the beauty of some of these casinos…the constant eating of fast food to the exclusion of anything else…..Them getting into clubs, not having to play cover and getting to bypass the line, then leaving soon after arriving…..I know different strokes for diff folks, but come on!! I ate two meals by myself at Aladdin, just so I could get so decent food.
The kicker was, these guys didn’t tip!! I wasn’t sure at first. My biggest clue was when we took a cab ride downtown. $18 fare. They tipped $2!!! I felt horrible for the cabbie. She was so sweet and talked to us the whole trip, telling us to have a blessed day as we exited. I gave her a 5 spot on top of the 2. When we were taken to the airport by the shuttle, all of them grabbed their bags just started walking, except Shyboy. When he saw me give the driver $4, he scrambled to find a tip of his own.
I’ve never been to Vegas with such an unappreciative group. It made the trip a real downer. I have honestly been in shock since I came back.
Like I said, if not for vegashost, this trip would have been a bust. It was my only real bright spot, getting into fun clubs and not waiting in line.
Who would have thunk it? A so-so trip to Vegas.
Brrr….
