Watched the PBS special on it (missed the first 1/2 hour) - I was just amazed at the whole thing. Of course I had heard of it, it's legendary, but had no idea there were SO many people!

And how did so many people learn it was happening? There was no internet then.

I also wonder how much money the promoters lost - too bad they didn't get $1 per person.

The farmer was cool. Wonder how long it took to get his land back in shape.

    Did anybody attend?

I believe it was from the radio, maybe Cousin Brucie on New York AM WABC may have talked about it? I was 12 and I remember my sister who was 17 wanting to go with a neighborhood girlfriend and our dad was a firm no.

Rotary dial telephones, no cell phones either. Just in the past week, I celebrated a big birthday and read the line above. I’m officially an old fart.

Here is an article that was first published in 1994 entitled “How Woodstock Happened.”

I remember hearing more of the traffic tie-ups than the concert, per se, until it was over. I really don't remember that much advance publicity.

I watched it as well and thought it was very well done. The thing they did not really hit on was like you said. The cost.

Sure, peace and love and all that but, just like today, someone at some point has to pay for it all. That would have been nice if they addressed that rather then just leaving people think that they just need to be nice and friendly and all will be magically provided for them.

I was there. :peace:. College Junior at Syracuse Univ.
    Unbelievable harmony.
While you were watching the bands assorted items would be passed around. Sandwiches, water, joints, etc.
Even if you didn't watch the music there was much to do. Cool people to talk to. The music could always be heard no matter what you were doing.

I believe they recouped some of their lost with the movie.

I was 18 back then and never heard a thing about it till after it was over and some girls at work were talking about it ... had I heard about it before, I was living a sheltered life and wouldn't have gone... my boyfriend was in Vietnam at the time. Looking back, I wish I would have gone.

I was around 13 yrs old at the time, but I'm pretty sure that I heard about Woodstock on the radio. My older brother was interested in going, but he was in the USAF back then, so that was a no go for him.

Just recently found out that Sha Na Na performed. My line of thinking was that this was not in keeping with the general vibe of the art/music fair. You learn something every day.

So did you just sleep in place?

Strange question but were there enough porta-potties?

I was at Phan Rang, AB. We heard vague rumors about it, nothing more.

I was 11 at the time and living in NE Ohio. Our next door neighbor's daughter who was 19 or 20 I guess went with her boyfriend (damn he was a lucky guy). It was a HUGE deal, cause her Mom and Dad were NOT happy. I don't believe she ever moved back in, though she visited often. She was a vision in that backyard doughboy above ground pool!

Had a sleeping bag. Left the music when it was time to crash. Slept in the fields.

I was with the 101st humping in the mountains in Nam. Read about it in the Stars & Strips. Didn't feel too good about those hippies because of the animosity towards American soldiers. We were all baby killers....right? Somehow 1969 feels like it was just last week. Nam guys know what I'm talking about.
