My up coming trip is the first in atleast 6 years. As I'm formulating my plan of attack, I have to wonder why the mono rail hasn't connected with downtown yet ? Or here's a crazy idea how about a giant loop going down one side of the strip over to downtown and back up the other side of the strip. How convenient that would be ?

First time on the monorail on my last visit and seemed to be always empty even though I enjoyed heading up to the SLS etc on it.

Guessing just the money it would cost kind of cripples them and it would be a fair stretch to get all the way to downtown with not a lot of stops in between SLS and downtown.

I read a few months ago that they are planning on running it over to Mandalay Bay so you never know in the future but I cannot see it going all the way downtown.

That would be awesome and probably generate more visitors downtown.
In fact just tie it into McCarran too.

I have been on it when its empty and when its jambed full, so full we had to wait a few times for it to pass and people get off

one of the reason its going down by mandalay bay is because the LV Raiders are building the stadium near there...maybe when wynn builds the lake and other hotels hell add a stop to his property that he originally didnt want

Doubt it. Steve wouldn't want people who ride the monorail anywhere near his place.

The main reason the monorail hasn't been stretched to Downtown yet is simple: money. That sucker cost too much to build, the cab lobby wants it gone, and there is really no driving economic reason to build it. Extending it to the new football stadium makes all sorts of economic sense.

It will be a huge effort just to get it to MB and there is a desire to connect to the airport. But from what I've gleaned from skimming transportation articles in the local press, TPTB just don't get the value of public transportation beyond buses and really don't get the value of offering light rail outside of what they deem to be the tourist sector which is only the strip. They at least used to promote taking the monorail to Sahara and taking a bus to downtown as an option and don't even do that anymore. Vegas could afford to get some cars of the road but they just don't have the mindset to see a wider monorail system as a way to accomplish that.

As for Wynn, they used to shuttle people over from the Convention Center site from the monorail. It shut down I think when they started building Echelon. I don't know if there was ever a reason given for not starting it back up but the monorail's financial issues were probably a deterrent. I think if ridership were stronger, more of the properties along the line would do more to support it in one way or another.

Money and demand. Same reason there hasn't been a connection to the airport yet. I think, right now, they are happy being a way for folks on the west side of the Strip to get to the convention center.

Do not be offended if a few folks stop in here and laugh.

The monorail has been the subject of many long news articles, studies, long threads here, and big money losses. Folks have worked hard to get it to the airport. Nope.
Any expansion is... I will leave it at that.

If you know anyone with a few hundred million - maybe a billion to blow - ask them to build it.

And that's the other part. The monorail is a private enterprise. If the state and county were willing to build it themselves or do a public/private partnership to get it done, it would be more foreseeable. With the monorail already going bust once it the past, it's going to be harder to raise the money to expand it even for a no-brainer like connecting it to MB and presumably the new Stadium.

Tony, if you have a smartphone, you might want to download the Uber and Lyft app and use it on your upcoming trip.

The plans were to join the monorail with McCarren but somehow that plan died. Yes, the taxi cartel didn't want anyone else to take their business away from them.

Money is the deciding factor, they just didn't want to spend the money to build the monorail to downtown. yes it would be great for many of us but maybe they couldn't justify the cost of building the rail to downtown.

Probably would not be so great for the tax payers. My idea would be the best.

A log ride that goes up and down each side of the strip above the sidewalks. You could just relax and drink your beverage while riding the log ride from casino to casino. No machines, just a hollowed out log and gentle gravity pushing you along. just pull a lever or something when you get to your desired casino to take a side chute. Now thats something I would pay my tax money for!!

being a Native New Yorker I'm big on trains. In Jersey they connected Newark airport to Newark Penn station and virtually anyone in the metropolitan area can get on a train in their hometown and get off inside a terminal In Newark Airport. The state and city should do some kind of partnership and connect the Airport to the strip and downtown. That would make getting around so much easier

I could agree with the Cab industry not wanting it, but with lyft and uber pushing their way in I would suspect the taxi industry doesn't have as much pull as it did?
