I just stayed there Dec 2-4.

    Booked a Studio room
    Checked in at 11pm
Only a couple people in line

I didnt show a tip or mention it at all. All I asked is if there was any available upgrades. Lady says she already upgraded me to a 1br suite. Good deal for me.

The $20.00 trick has worked in several hotels. It takes a little practice but well worth it.

If you already have a M-life offer (for a corner suite) & extras ;will the $20-$40 upgrage offer effect other comps if they put you in a better suite ?

You really dont know until you get there. Some weekends may be busy for specific hotels or not. Its just chance at the time you get there and the person who checks you in.

Someone checking in at 8pm vs 11pm may get different chance. Just a matter of availability when you check in.

At most strip hotels the $20 trick has been unofficially extended to Sun through Wed.
    Downtown, who knows...

I agree with the crew in saying - it all depends.

I've used the "$20 trick" successfully too, but on slow to moderate days and weekends. What it comes down to is the desk staff are much more likely to upgrade you if those rooms are going to be sitting empty.

A suggestion: Check the "Guest Gauge" at the Las Vegas Sun news website. It's usually operational on Wednesdays+ leading into a weekend and is considered a reliable measure of how busy Las Vegas will be. Since it's based on occupancy rates, it's just right for this situation.

As a service industry worker who works for tips on the weekend, I don't think I actually would have been offended (NO - not a strip club lol!!!). He/she had the tip up front for a particular specified type of request. She was unable to complete that request & provide the type of room he had requested. She did provide an upgraded room - with the $20 then full in view, so she knew what she was being offered - and also sent the champagne afterwards. So she was evidently satisfied with the tip for the service she was able to provide.

Others would just be p*ssed off becaues they couldn't get the suite they wanted & probably would end up making her day miserable. She was still able to provide something to satisfy this customer & also get something herself.

Normally I would agree it was tacky if they just asked for an upgrade then took it back & replaced, but this was a specified request that was unable to be fulfilled.

    The $40 trick

Am I the first to try this? I'm thinking the $20 is old and gone by the wayside.

I don't think $40 over $20 makes a difference. If they have the upgrade, they will give it to for $20. A $20 per hour wage isn't bad and the flexibility to earn extra $$$ is a nice incentive.

I've tried this a few times.

Excalibur- $20 We went from a nonrenovated, nonview room to a Widescreen room and strip view. The woman at check in also have us a coupon book.

Luxor- $20 Went from a basic Pyramid room to a room in the West Tower. Also got a coupon book thrown in.

Mirage- $20 Got a strip view on a high floor. She did her best considering this was during Spring Break.

Planet Hollywood- $20 Got told they consider all their rooms premium rooms but for an extra $50 per night we could have a room with a strip view. Didn't do the upgrade.

Caesar's Palace- $40 We went from a Forum room (cheapest one they offer) to a Palace Petite Suite. I at least I think that was the room. Palace Tower that has a jacuzzi, bidet and shower connecting the two bathrooms.

Bally's- $20 Went from a pet stay room in the South Tower (the only room in all of Ceasar's Corp. that was comped the week we wanted to go) to a room in the North Tower on the 24th floor which they consider their Diamond Level.

Definitely ask first. If they're not packed when you're checking in, there is a good chance they will assign you a strip view.
