I’ve gotten both types, $20 and upgrades for just asking nicely in VIP check in. It’s more of a YMMV type of situation. Nowadays, I put out the $20 and ask if there is anything “with a bit more space?” Sometimes it works, sometimes they counter with a per night charge. If it’s a good deal, I’ll take it and still give the person the $20.

My reservation is usually a 2 or 3 night comp within a 5 night stay. My VIP check in is only based upon me contacting MGM (where I usually stay) and ask for the VIP check in instead of standing in a long line. I am not a high end player to be dealing with a host..lol.

Just wondering and thinking outside the box....instead of a $20 bill has anyone ever tried a sandwich with an Amazon Gift Card. It would blend in with the CC and license you hand the clerk since they would all be the same size.

I dont see why you would want to tbh. One the clerk wont know if its an accident or not, two theres no way of telling if the gift card is valid/pre loaded and 3 theres really no need to be "stealthy" with the "trick" its just a tip and theres no need to hide it. Just my opinion of course :)

Just a curious question - Sorry if it's been answered already. In your experience and, in general, if the FD clerk can't (or won't) honor the upgrade request, do you usually get the $20 back, or is it lost?

Sorry... I honestly don't know....

you offer it in a way that you can reel it back in.
such as "oops I dropped a $20" or "oops that $20 must have stuck to the back of my ID"

If I booked my room through hotwire, will the $20 trick work? or does my room have to be booked directly?

    it can still work.

    $20 is $20.
if the desk clerk wants some easy money and they have an upgrade available. it never hurts to try.

Yes, it can work on any type of reservation. Just be nice and see what can happen. Good luck!

Yeah, your approach is key. Big smile, chat up the clerk, and tell them you're celebrating something, doesn't matter what. And that you're excited to be there. Then slip em the bill. It's worked for me many times, and although I'm a low roller, somehow it makes me feel like a whale, which is nice.

Staying at a strip hotel on a Monday night. I'm guessing it won't be so busy. Does the $20 check-in trick work? Let me know if you've done it and how to make it happen!

IMHO, $20 trick doesn't work like it used to. Not saying that it won't work, but inflation has made the cost of this "trick" more expensive if you really want to get what you want to get

There is an entire section of this message board devoted to this. Looking up your particular strip hotel may be your best source of info.

I checked it and it seems the hotel doesn't accept it :(

I don't want to get the front desk guy fired.
