When you do the $20 trick do you just put it on the desk or do you fold it up and hand it with the credit card? Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse with that question, I couldn't find the answer in the forum index.

Fold it and put it between your ID and credit card.

Do you actually need to say anything or just hand over the "sandwich?"

The usual line is to ask if there are any complimentary upgrades available.

Finally tried this last week after years of being curious! We were both nervous so we just handed her the card/id with $20 in between after saying hello. She said "We accept tips based on service. Let's see what I can do.". She was able to upgrade us from the Forum tower at Caesar's to the Augustus tower with a strip view. Well worth our $20 for a three night stay. We had all three nights comped but it didn't seem to affect our success.

I just give them the cc and ID and lay the $ down with them. No sandwich, no nothing. They look at it and begin typing.

I wonder what happens to the odds of success, when trying to do this during a convention such as SEMA?

2014 had an estimate of 140k visitors. I couldn't find actual but WIKI says the strip only has 62k rooms.

Never tried this. Probably will try this in february. But i'm to nervous to say something wrong or what ever :-S

Will there be a diffrent when arriving on a sunday or an other day??
Do i have to say something like an complementary upgrade, or just ask for a room with view and a tub?

So what's the point of hiding the $20 in between the credit card and the ID? It creates awkwardness when the bill falls out as the agent is taking it from you.

I've found this works just as well: hand the agent credit card and ID as usual. Then hold a folded up $20 in my hand on top of the counter, clearly visible, while asking if there's any upgrades available. The agent knows exactly why that $20 is sitting there in your fingertips. Once everything is done, I hand them the $20 and say, "For you".

What am I missing with the sandwich thing?

You don't "hide" it, it's just a good way to hand it to the agent. Your way seems just as good. I felt awkward the first time I tried it, esp. when the agent kinda flung it back at me, but when it worked I felt great! Definitely worth a try!

Well, I guess it didn't work out the same way for me. :) The first time I did it, the $20 fell on the floor at the feet of the desk agent. The third time I did it, the $20 fell down a slot in front of the monitor and she had to dig it out of the cabinet!

So since then, I just keep it in my fingers on top of the counter. Still reasonably discreet, but obvious enough to the agent when you ask, "Any possibility of a complimentary room upgrade?" And it usually works.

Get a little "liquid courage" in you first and wear a jacket, class it up a little. I'm 2/2 on the $20 sandwich.

LOL I was thinking the exact same thing.
Since we're staying @ MSS where apparently isn't much to upgrade anyways might not even try.
Or maybe still try for a room away from the railroad tracks...
