We did this drive several years ago. We used the directions from the Skywalk website. Easy to find. Last 7 miles or so (if I remember correctly) is a dirt road. Easily drivable. We had a Ford Mustang rental car. A side note, seeing when you are going- it will probably be very cold at the canyon. Have a great time.

A piece of good news -- the entire road is now paved.

WE are going to the south rim April 22 arriving around 12/1pm. When you say 'cold' how cold? hoodie/jacket weather or cooler?
I just saw the 80 degree average temp for that time of year and assumed the canyon would be the same.

The South Rim (i.e., Grand Canyon National Park's village area) is a good choice. In mid to late April, high temperatures average in the low 60's; low temperatures average in the low 30's. Viewpoints are sometimes very windy, which makes it seem colder still. It's too soon for accurate long term forecasts.

Thanks for the info. Coming from the east, spring icebox area, 60 will be wonderful.:) We'll be packing a jacket for the canyon trip.

Approximately 2 hours, depending on traffic.
