I have never visited Freemont from all the negative reviews I have read about the freaks hanging out there? Has anyone been there recently and is it safer then the reviews say? If so what is a good day of the week to go when its not so crowded as my future Mother Law uses a wheel chair and I wouldn't want to be stuck in a big crowed with her? Thanks in advance for any input or advice!!! Getting closer to single digits! Celebrating my mothers retirement, my birthday and also getting hitched on my birthday to my companion of 18 years!!!

I'm assuming you mean Fremont Street and not specifically the Fremont casino. To me, downtown vegas is las vegas. The strip feels more like a shopping mall than a destination now. Wheel chair access on Fremont street can be a bit challenging, but not prohibitive. I would recommend going around 6pm just as it starts to get busy.

The crowds Friday night were crazy. But not anymore so than on the strip. It was fun and not at all dangerous.

Everybody needs to go downtown at least once.
Crowds are not any worse than walking the main aisles of Bellagio or Caesars on a weekend.Maybe easier than trying to negotiate the Strip in front of Flamingo.
A weeknight will be less crowded.
Plan on arriving in the evening so you can see one of the FSE light shows.

The freaks are what makes it fun.

It all depends on how much you travel to LV. IMHO, the FSE (Fremont Street Experience is worth seeing at least once. With wintertime approaching, it will be getting dark earlier, and if you don't like it, can hustle back to the strip (or wherever you're staying) and still have a evening to enjoy.

What negative reviews? It's safer there than on the strip, also as you can imagine, it's busier on the weekends, less busy during the week.

On Fremont Street I feel safe. You should see it at least once. The freaks are a small percentage of the crowd. As far as getting around with a wheel chair I suspect getting there might be the challenge. Freemont Street has much more space than the Strip sidewalks and not as dense with people. I would just avoid Fri/Sat night.

I think that the negative aspect of the Strip or Downtown is the same. There are a lot of the "freaks" as you say on the Strip overpasses and along the stretch of Ballys and PH. And there they are Downtown under the Canopy and along the side streets and even by the bus stops.

If you want to visit Fremont St. (Canopy/casino area) avoid weekends and like mentioned earlier go early evenings just when the canopy shows starts. You'll get a feel pretty quick whether you'll like it or not. That way the night is still young and you can visit elsewhere.

using a wheelchair is probably easier on Fremont than the strip. Everything is close and no steps and bridges to worry about. Just as many homeless on strip and no porn slappers. Several cheaper shows. Food will be 1/2 or less than strip.

I normally hang out on the strip but I occasionally go downtown and I always enjoy my visits. It's a must do Vegas experience!

It's worth going just once, if for no other reason than to have been-there-done-that. We've gone a couple of times, though I'm almost certain we'll never go again. I like the old casinos and the patrons provide some world class 'people-watching-and-whispered-commentary' opportunities.

Funny now that I'm a committed downtown guy, it's a visit to the strip thats become optional.

It's more of a time of day issue for crowds as mentioned above. The mornings are very quiet downtown. Afternoons pick up a little and the evenings are hopping.

We just recently spent 5 nites in Vegas. We were only on the Strip one nite as we much prefer the Downtown area. I find Fremont Street to be very safe and entertaining. Downtown is really where Vegas began!

I love downtown in the mornings. It is usually really quiet. I enjoy walking around, playing a bit then going for my pancakes at Dupars. If someone comes up to you just keep your head down and keep going. The last couple of trips to Vegas I thought the people/activities on the overpasses on the strip were more sketchy than downtown.

I would recommend going during the daytime. Up to dusk there really isn't any crowd (unless there is something special going on). After dark is when the hawkers and "freaks" come out. Best to go early before and after sunset so you can see the overhead light show at least once and you can see the vendors start to open up. A few hours later it can get crowded, esp with a wheelchair.

Unfortunately the Fremont St. area (IMHO) looks a little drab and dreary during the daytime, esp without the neon lights. Not much going on along the mall area during the day (except the overhead zip line) so there really isn't much to see. But then if you stay during sunset you can watch the downtown area come alive with the neon lights and vendors.

As for safety IMHO I think the Fremont St. area is as safe (if not safer) than most locations on the strip. On the strip you have to watch yourself for pickpockets and downtown you just have to also watch out in case there are similar predators. Most of the freaks won't bother you and if they do you just tell them that you aren't interested (same as on the strip IMHO) and walk past them.

I almost always hang out downtown, you sound like a strip regular, next time I might try the strip for a day, what days are busy on the strip, also I've heard there are a lot of pickpockets there, what areas should I avoid?
