Nice find! I just spent an hour watching related videos. Neat to see how much has changed.
This guy has a solid collection of pics: http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=miutcb&search_query=las%20vegas
This thread is amazing!
I can't believe I've been coming to this site for a year and have only stumbled upon it today!! Keep posting the pics. Would love to see more.
Saw Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence at the Frontier on our first trip to Vegas (obviously dating myself here<g>). Great show! Also saw Liberace that trip - I'm pretty sure he was at the Riviera - and something else at the Landmark (forgotten that). Saw a lot of shows back then and probably only gambled $40 or $50; now I catch one or two shows a trip and spend a lot more time playing VP.
gr8 pic the first one is very awesome
This is the first time I noticed this thread! I love old vegas pictures for some weird reason they gte me much more psyched for a trip than new pictures. My first trip was in 1998 when I was 27 and I curse myself for not having gone sooner to see some of that stuff in person.
Adding to the fun
These great pics are of my mother and the man himself, Mr. Robert Urich as Dan Tanna. My parents were staying at the Desert Inn-June 1979- and my mother was invited by the cast to spend the day on the set aka the DI grounds. Great shots of Bart Braverman as Binzer and Greg Morris as Lt. David Nelson.
Check out the Midnight Idol and that fashion statement from the past. That is actually a newspaper clipping, but the pic is from his humble abode.
We are remodeling our house and I hope to find more of these vintage pics soon.
I love looking at these vintage pictures~ my first trip to Vegas was last year, so it's interesting to see how much it has changed and grown.
Great photos VegasGirl, sure hope you find some more.
June of 79 was my first trip to Vegas and I'll even admit to having the hubby drive around behind Circus Circus looking for Dan Tanna's hideout. Needless to say we never found it. And all that time he was at DI...wish I had known that!
Thanks for the memories.
Here are a few more pics from the same trip I posted months ago. I went to my Grandma's yesterday and got a few more pics to scan. She informed me that their Jet was scheduled to pickup Elvis after them.
I asked her three times about the performer picture, but I already forgot, and I will have to update you on this.
I just threw in the Holiday Hotel because I've never heard of it.. My Grandma didn't know anything about it, do any of you know anything about it?
Just a guess, but I think it is now Harrah's. Harrah's used to be the Showboat. Maybe Holiday was before that.
Edited to add: Yup, it is now Harrahs. Renamed from Holiday to Harrahs in 1992. Just ignore the part about Showboat. That was wrong.

Great pics. Thanks for posting the link Al. Glad to see this thread is still going.
Awesome thread I am loving the pics!
Thanks for the old pics Westie! Was trying to explain the old riverboat that used to be on the strip and figure out where it used to be. Sure is a lot different strip from my first visit years ago!
DAMN! How did I miss that? That so needs to be put to music...! Wow, thanks Westie. I got inspired there.......!
What a great thread; it is so much fun to look at these old photos and remember "the good old days" before Vegas became so completely Corporate. My first trip was in 79 and I've been somewhere in the neighbourhood of 60+ times (long ago lost accurate count). Loved the old "Ship on the Strip" photos, the old Holiday Casino, now Harrahs....it was one of the first places I stayed, the old Sands, Dunes, Marina, Maxim and remembering when even the hotels that are still there, Flamingo etc were set so far back from the road. I will have to dig through some boxes in the basement to find some old Vegas photos.....this made me quite nostalgic.
Have to say too, is it just me or whenever you see photos from Vegas or something on television do you live in fear for a split second that you may show up in the background doing something ridiculous, lol.....no??? Ok just me then!
I would wear that like a badge of honor
What a great batch of old Vegas photos. Some pretty neat views. Loved all the old American iron I seen in those photos too ! I have some old photos from my Vegas vacations back in the 70s. I'm afraid the quality is lacking......and unfortunately, a large batch of photos we had taken in 1973 were stolen on the way home at a diner in St. George, UT. I will try and post a few in the coming days.
One quick question: Does anybody remember the name and location of that gas station on the strip that used to have a sign that read something to the effect: "Tender Sympathies and Free Aspirin" ? I seem to recall it being on the west side of the strip... Just curious.
