I think the biggest rookie mistake we made was thinking we'd be one and done with Las Vegas. :haha:

We went with some friends who were Vegas veterans so I'm sure they saved us from making a bunch of dumb mistakes.

I did have some very wrong preconceived ideas though. I remember asking where all the wedding chapels were. In my mind The Strip was laid out with a casino followed by a wedding chapel followed by another casino then a another wedding chapel and so on. I didn't do nearly any of the research that I do now when I go to a new place.

I am a gambling Vegas loving CPA and have a wife that used to hate Vegas and now she loves it. You just have to drag her along enough times and eventually they will turn around!! She is now having withdrawals, just like everyone else...

As I said when a friend wanted to walk from the Vegas Hilton to the Hard Rock ... OK!

I definitely was not a rookie, but one mistake I will always remember making is going to meet some people at the Hard Rock, walking from the MGM Monorail station, and failing to heed the Bad Hair Advisory Day warning. (Harmon was a total wind tunnel!)

Oh, yeah, I've done this one, too... Second or third time in Vegas, I'm looking out the window of my hotel room on the East side of the Strip: "The Palms is just across the street... I'll just walk."

Two miles later: "That was not just across the street...."

Took a cab back to the hotel.

This isn’t really a rookie mistake story as much as it was uncouth. We took my mom & my aunt (who took me for my Vegas cherry trip) to Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak which gives out very tasty, complimentary bread.

Anyway, my aunt & my mom shared a big steak which they couldn’t finish. At the end of the meal we had extra bread & their steak. My aunt, bless her heart, starts making sandwiches & our waiter catches her in the act. He wants to laugh but he just smiles and offers her more bread. My aunt looks up shrugs & says “what?” I tipped our waiter nicely for his diplomacy & we all had a good laugh about it afterwards.

My aunt grew up in the depression era & used take a fist full of pens from the players lounge each trip. She had no shame in her game.

Technically not a rookie act as it was on my third trip, but it still qualifies. On my third trip a buddy joined me. We were at Palace Station. We got in and settled in by early afternoon. Since I planned on imbibing, we left the car and took the strip shuttle. Starting at Fashion Show we headed south until we reached the MGM and then headed north until reaching the Sands. By now it's about 1 or 2 am with x number of drinks under our belt. My buddy saw a special for steak and lobster for $6.95 and we went for it. Two bites in we paid our bill, left a tip and cabbed back to PS. We had steak and eggs in the cafe followed by a good nights sleep!
