Having to visit a hospital in Vegas is NOT on anyone's trip list. However, it could happen.

I remember reading a couple reports about someone having to go for an emergency. If anyone has any experience at any hospitals in the Valley, please post the hospital name. No personal information or ailment information.

Funny, I've been going to Vegas for 21 years and this is the first time I am adding hospital information to my list of MISC information. Ahh, aging.

I hope nobody ever has to visit a Vegas hospital. Some of the worst health care in the country. US News & World Report has ranked hospitals for the last 30 years and in the 2018 list, not one NV hospital is ranked in any specialty.

Good point, @Joe. But what would you say is your best bet for emergency/trauma care if you need it? UMC? They have a pretty good ER, but ugh for lesser or longer term care.

I have no idea where else I would go if I had a need for non-trauma/emergency medical care while on vacation in Las Vegas.

Huh, given that there's a medical school about two miles from the Strip, I'm surprised medical care is so poor in Las Vegas. Learn something new every day.

@Sonya Yea, I guess UMC would be the place I would go to. Lets hope I never have to find out.

Two I will reflect upon here. Both happened to family members.

First was at the Stardust many many years ago. My brother got something stuck in his eye, like a grain of sand under a contact or something. It was bothering him and we had stopped to get him some eyewash but at dinner he was in pain. I asked a security guy what they recommended and he said first, "Don't go to University" and explained in a very explicit way why we should not go. (PM me if you want details.) He said that Desert Springs was probably the next closest and most likely the best. They got him in immediately, extracted the foreign object, gave him some Good Drugs (tm) and all was OK.

Second was just a few years ago at Sams Town. It was one of those "(cough-cough-hack-retch-cough) Oh, it's getting better, I'll be OK (cough-hack)" things! I finally put my foot down and told him that he **IS** going in! I again asked a security guy if there was a "Quack In A Box" type place around there. He said that Walgreens had one but it had strange hours. He then said that there was a regular physician's office about a mile down Boulder which had a side entrance as a Quick Care clinic so I took him down there. It was as described. A side entrance to a regular family practice office. They did the Billfold Biopsy at the desk and he was shown in after maybe a 10 minute wait. They gave him antibiotics and screamed at him for not coming in earlier.

You’re likely referring to my August/September 2018 TR as one of them. I was in the ER in Fort Mohave, AZ at first, but then got transferred up to Sunrise Medical Center in Las Vegas, which is where I had to go for follow-up visits and X-rays.

Avoid this place at all costs. That place is a total mess and 95% of all people I interacted with were total morons, many of whom were outright rude.

As an example of rudeness, one of the nurses asked me to read something on a sheet. I had lost my prescription sunglasses in the accident, but my regular glasses were in my backpack, which I couldn’t physically bend over to pick up. So I asked her if she could get my glasses from my backpack’s front pocket. She rolled her eyes and literally huffed and puffed, saying “umm, okay, I... guess I can do that for you”.

Before being discharged, they wrote me a prescription for a painkiller that they knew there was a shortage of in the area, and told me it wasn’t their problem when I called in saying I couldn’t get it.

Then, when I had to go for follow-up visits to get clearance to fly, it turned out that there was a whole “passing the buck” game going on behind the scenes where none of the doctors wanted to take me because none of them wanted the liability of writing a flight clearance (because it’s an automatic $30k+ fine for the doctor if the plane has to land).

Once that surfaced, one of the head nurses asked me why I needed the clearance in the first place, subsequently asking “did you tell the airline that you were injured?”. When I told her of course I told them, she scoffed at me like I was an idiot and asked “what did you do that for?!”. As if I should have not told the airline, like that was an option.

Then, even though my insurance made it clear they would pay for everything, they STILL sent me a bill, saying they’ve discounted it for me as an uninsured patient (???). I have no doubt they “accidentally” send those out hoping patients will just pay it and not ask questions.

The accident and resulting pain I suffered from was traumatizing by itself, but having to deal with Sunrise Medical Center was a much worse experience that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

But but but, Vegas is heaven.

As another noted, we get to a certain point in life and this stuff starts becoming ever more important. I know as we start thinking big picture about our retirement move, the breadth, depth and quality of local health care keeps creeping up the ladder of importance. It's not #1, but it's also not #10.

In all our 100+ Vegas trips -- knock wood -- other than colds or the flu setting in, we only needed urgent care once, for my dad, when he was hit with a bout of gout. I believe it was an urgent care near Harmon and Flamingo.

I have nothing but praise for the hospital in Vegas. spent 5 days there my pain started just before it was time to board. the paramedics were so good. while i was getting test done dr keep coming and checking same with the nurses. they took my insurance info said don't worry we will contact them in morning and because we had a late flt, we had room for extra day. Harrahs said to my daughter don t worry the room yours as long as we needed it. told her just charge food back to room. when i got released the dr ph my room to check on me. same when i came home spoke to my dr back home. Harrahs took care of everything and for this I will be loyal to them. i would not hesitate to the hospital there but hope i never have to and even Westjet went out of their way to arange new flight home at no extra charge

And it just goes to show when people throw out best/worst here that there is always at least one person with the opposite experience.

never been to a Vegas hospital. I would expect with a medical school there that there are certainly competent People. On the human side you know they see a lot of rude, rowdy, drunk ,homeless People.. I'm sure a lot of mental illness as well. Speaking from experience that can get old very quick.
I would not hesitate to go to one of their hospitals. I would not want to sit in their waiting Room however .

February 2018 my ex-father in law (early 80's) fell and hit his head at The Orleans and a friend who lives in Vegas recommended UMC on Charleston. This was the evening before the Super Bowl, the ER was crowded, took five hours for them to check him and run tests and then add a few staples to his head, but other than the waiting his treatment seemed to be fine.

my one experience was the ER at UMC on Charleston. maybe it was luck, but not too busy at 8 a.m. and I didn't have to wait too long.
the Dr. was good and the only one that could come up with the correct diagnoses. I don't know where I would be if not for him.
generally, Vegas is usually ranked pretty low on health care and hospitals.

Below is my experience at Spring Valley Hospital on Rainbow. It gets a great many of the strip ambulance cases. This per my EMT niece who worked for AMR. She said we should have gone further west to Southern Hills Hospital.

    Spring Valley Hospital

On the flip side my Nephew got very good care for cardiac widow maker. He's still with us ten years later.

I had to go there once, about 15 years ago. I picked up a stomach virus, or something, and it wasn't a pretty sight. After 3 days it wasn't getting better so I called the front desk and they recommended this place. I got in fairly quickly, and was treated well. But 15 years is a long time, and things change, so YMMV.
