    Is it a bad idea?

i'm doing research and its saying hiking isn't recommended during summer months because of the heat.
what about just driving thru in a convertible in the early evening to see the sunset?

has any VMB member done it?

I've done it numerous times on my Harley, its hot but doable. At least with a convertible you can still crank up the A/C for some relief from the heat.

What car did you rent in the US that doesn't have AC? Are you sure on this? The basic rentals like a Mustang will have it.

I've done it in the middle of the day in the blistering heat, it was OK, I wouldn't do it again!

Just as an FYI, it is a romantic idea to be cruising through the beautiful scenery at Valley of Fire in a convertible, the wind whipping through your hair until you pause to watch the dramatic sunset - but it ain't gonna happen. The park closes at 7pm and the sun doesn't set in Vegas in late June until about 8pm. It sets at about 7pm in July (giving no time to exit the park) and about 6:45pm in August (which is cutting it very close).

You can check sunset times here to plan your trip:

You might want to do the romantic sunset ride through Red Rock Canyon instead. The Scenic Loop closes at 7pm but you can still ride through the park on the main road at all hours of the night to get to Blue Diamond Road, so you can pull over and still watch a gorgeous sunset.

By the way, if you exit Valley of Fire from the back, it will take you to the Lake Mead/Hoover Dam/Boulder City area.

Many of the Slingshot rentals I've seen have a canopy on them.

I was out hiking VOF in 110-115 heat a couple of years ago. It' was doable but not enjoyable. But driving it in a ragtop should be just fine. You can always put the top up if you must :)
