To me, the only value to keeping it as a souvenir would be if you had it stamped and you want to keep that as a keepsake. Otherwise you can just throw out/shred the old one.

This is all good info and y'all bring up an interesting point I'd never thought of. Is a cancelled passport useful as back ID if you were to loose your primary one when on travel? Would it get me through TSA? If so I might carry mine as a backup but I'd be reluctant to carry my active one when not needed (or is that something you WOULD recommend as backup?). Can anyone confirm or deny?

According to post #7 in this thread:
"I looked up the question on the internet and the passport office says that even cancelled it is good for proof of ID and citizenship."

And I'll say it again: Chip in the pittance to add the passport card.

Interesting - why do you recommend it? I've never found a good reason to add a passport card, but then, I have no problem carrying my actual passport when I need to. I have a REALID DL now, have Global Entry, have a passport with the extra pages.....What added value would a passport card give me?

Backup, another form of ID, you find yourself in Seattle and figure, hey, let's have dinner in Vancouver.

Everyone I know who lives in Seattle has a Card simply because it’s easier to carry and works for Canada. Works for Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean too, but so does my passport. Personally, I don’t leave the country without my passport, but if you cross the border frequently the Card would be nice to have. We live in Texas, but we won’t go to Mexico anymore so the card would have very limited utility to us. Still, would never hurt to have it.

My passport card is in my wallet. It got me through TSA once when like an idiot I left my DL in the car, which I had taken out for some reason and not put back in my wallet.

Nope, not a good enough reason for me to get a passport card. Perhaps if I lived near a border. But since very little of my international travel is North America, the regular passport just travels with me....

And that is why we have choices.

I always ask though - there could have been a reason I hadn't thought of before that would apply to me. Don't know unless I ask ;-)

I like the idea of it as a backup ID. I might have gotten one when I got my passport if I'd thought of that.

We got the passport card, not so much for travel around the Caribbean so much as alternate legit ID. The key to success, however, is not to carry the card in the wallet (in case the wallet is stolen / lost).

Also you're supposed to keep the old passport for memories
