    My Trip Report

My first trip this year was supposed to happen in April. Then another in the first week of June that never materialized. So I planned to leave July 23rd for 5 nights. It’s a solo trip as my wife can’t get the time off and doesn’t really want to go anyway. She’s been pretty good about me taking solo trips and leaving her with the 16, 10 and 7 year old because I’m not much of a drinker and definitely not a partier.

So where does the pool part come in? We talked about it for a while and with the kids being home so much, we decided they’d really enjoy a pool. Problem is, I didn’t want to spend $40k+ only to lose half of that if we sell the house. So the agreement was made a few weeks ago: build a pool and then go to Vegas. We decided to go with an above ground pool because we could get it done all-in for less than $5k with landscaping and all.

We paid just under $3k for an Intex 32’x16’x4.5’. This thing is massive! We rounded up a few friends and family members. Mistake number one was not renting a sod cutter. I don’t have any photos of that part but let’s just say that trying to tear up the St. Augustine grass with shovels and hoes was no bueno. An hour and $124 later (cost for 24 hours with tax) and we had a sod cutter to cut the grass for us.

We probably saved about 20 man hours with the cutter and had the area cleared out by Noon.

At this point we laid down the weed blocker, and then started wheelbarrowing the sand from the front yard. We had 5 tons delivered and dumped onto tarps on the front driveway.

It took about an hour and a half to move all the sand. Once it was done we started leveling it and ended up having to move quite a bit of it towards the lower south end of the property to try to get more level due to the grade of the property sinking towards the canal. Once that finished, we stamped it down.

The pool installation took a bit under 3 hours. It was a bit more difficult than expected to install the U-shaped supports because the pool liner didn’t get hot enough to expand (too cloudy out). We did a lot of tugging on the plastic to try to line up the liner gaps with the holes in the poles that the U supports clicked into. Very tiring work.

Once it was done, we lay down some landscaping rocks and started filling. We stopped it at 8:00pm at night and dumped two 40lb bags of salt in the small amount of water we had gotten so far. Woke up yesterday and I did the ladder and set up the pumps and strainer and all while it started filling again. I went to work and my wife kept an eye on it all day and occasionally dumped more salt in. It finished filling around 7pm last night. It’s not perfectly level but it’s only about an inch off. The sides are still slightly concaved because we did not fill the pool all the way up (it expands outward as you fill it) because we want our 7 year old to be able to stand on flat feet and have her mouth above the water line. Very satisfied with it otherwise.

Today I’m working a half day, coming home to swim with the kids for a bit before their late afternoon dance sessions, and then I’m off to the airport to fly on American tonight. I’m in the big seats right now, and will pay to upgrade to first class if I can get it for $150 or less. Staying 3 nights in a DTG suite and 2 nights at Aria.

Have a good day everyone! I’ll update again later this afternoon.

Miami International Airport is pretty quiet for a Thursday night. Arrivals was empty and when I went upstairs to security the line was 2 people deep. It’s usually about 40-50 deep the last few times I’ve flown from here pre-Covid.

I’m going to try to score first class after I eat something. There were 3 seats left there last I checked. If not, I’m ok with my current seat.

Social whaaaaaaat? Tossed aside as soon as your boarding group gets called. Not any better in the plane either, with American Airlines filling middle seats. My plane is almost completely filled. I didn’t get first class but I still have my extra legroom. They gave me a goodie bag of stuff, too.

Oh, and I’ve been violated by my seat neighbor’s fake support animal. I like dogs so it’s ok!

I also got my first win of the trip: 2 empty seats on the whole plane and one of them is the middle seat next to me. See you on the flip side!

FML. We’re going back to the gate and changing planes due to some sort of maintenance issue.

Estimating 9:40pm departure, so a bit less than 2 hours. Not much worse than some typical delays if it holds up, I guess.

Even if I have to board three planes just to get in the air I’m still on vacation. It’s all good!

With that said, I’m a wimp when it comes to staying up late. I stay on east coast time in Vegas when I visit and I go to bed by 11 back home. Hoping to sleep a bit on the plane ride although I usually don’t.

Uneventful flight once we actually got in the air. Watched two episodes of The Last Dance on Netflix and slept for about 3 hours, even though it wasn’t great sleep. At least it helps. On my way to the rental car center. I don’t usually rent a car but I keep reading that rideshare is spotty plus I plan to make some trips to the South Point, maybe GVR and some off strip breakfast spots. I figured I’ll recoup most if not all of the rental car cost either way.

Nothing exciting last night. I grabbed a quick bite at Jack-in-the-Box on the way to the Downtown Grand only because somehow I’ve never eaten there before. So, just to say I have. It was OK but nothing memorable.

I thought the new stadium looked really cool from the highway:

For some reason I didn’t feel safe walking from the 3rd level of the parking garage down to the ground level/across the street to DTG. It probably had to do with the guy being arrested by about six police officers right near the garage as I drove in. Either way, as I came down the stairwell with my bag and backpack I was darting my eyes around corners to look for anything suspicious.

Check-in was quick at 1am and I really enjoy the room although I wasn’t expecting to hear some music reverberation. I may ask to switch rooms to another corner.

I’m up now and about to get ready for the day. I’ve been fiending for some Moco Loco so I’m going to try it at Claim Jumper and then it’s time for some VP after that!

Fremont is pretty empty at 6:30am, although that’s pretty much the case pre-Covid, too.

I went to Claim Jumper and their limited Covid menu excludes their Moco Loco. Aloha Specialties didn’t open for another 75 minutes and I was hungry so I came to 4Q and played a little warm-up $0.01 50-play DDB for 10 minute while I waited for Magnolia’s to open. Nothing exciting happened. Best hand was:

    09B7D6B8-D772-431B-9450-1EF17F1FC361.jpeg

    Cashed out -$30.

Then I went and exchanged one heart-attack inducing meal from my plans (for now) and substituted it with another (corned beef hash).

DTG VP offerings are terrible. I used to love their full pay games at the bar which is why I was able to build up some nice comps there that I’m using this trip. I was often playing for dollars there the last two visits.

I’m going to basically burn them this trip. I feel a little guilty because I know they’re struggling but I really see nothing to do there that I can’t do better somewhere else.

With that said I drove down to South Point and I’m loving this Ultimate X 3-line DDB. Had a few decent hits so far and I’m up about $150 but still playing:
