Tipping Uber

Yea I always found it weird that lyft has a tipping option on their app and uber does not

I thought it was interesting that Lyft uses it in their driver recruitment commercials.

I took Uber 3 times on my last trip to Vegas. I tipped cash every time. Every time they seemed surprised. I would dig in my purse for cash and they would kind of look at me funny. Since my trips were each around $10, there was no way that I was not going to tip. They can't be making much off driving me around (and each of them was very nice). I tipped between 10-20 each time. Mostly cus I don't mind paying cab prices, I mind feeling ripped off. Would b nice to add the tip on my credit card so I am not digging into my gambling stash. (My fiance pays the credit card haha)

Usually just tip if they help with luggage or are helpful with knowledge of the area. (Restaurant tips etc)

My company pays me very well, but they're cheap as hell when it comes to tips. I've been using Uber during many of my business trips lately, when it doesn't make sense to rent a vehicle. I LOVE it and swear I'll never get in a cab again... and I think I was one of the last cab supporters on VMB. When I travel, I always carry a substantial amount of ones and fives in my laptop case, which also functions as my man-purse. I give them cash, cause the company wouldn't allow me to add anything extra anyway even if they did include it as an option on the app.

I was in St. Paul, MN last week for work and Ubered to the airport. The driver and I were chatting and this came up. His take is that Uber considers "no tipping" to be a core part of their platform and discourage it. Drivers are supposed to say it's not necessary if passengers ask, which he does. Even so, he estimated 30% or so will tip anyway. He will accept it with thanks but is not upset at all if a passenger doesn't tip. He said a good rating is more important to him.

I brought it up, not him, and I did tip him $5 on an about $20 ride. And rated him 5*. He was nice.

H lied. Can't eat a good rating. And once UBER lowered fares almost everywhere for drivers tipping was keeping them on the road
. Most drivers are appreciative of a tip and will not refuse . Also, anything lower than a 5* rating is considered bad. Most people think 4* is good but in Uber (or Lyft) eyes it is a negative. If only 50% gave a 4* the driver would be taken off the road. Drivers need to maintain a 4.65 to drive.

I always tip when ubering in vegas as most of my rides are $10 or less. They seem genuinely appreciative of a $2- $3 tip unlike cabbies who expect it. Hopefully I've taken my last cab ride.

I drove Uber for a minute. I thought it would be a fun social experiment. I was generally right, but I got bored with it pretty quickly. In maybe 30 rides, I got one (cash) tip. It didn't make much of a difference in my net revenue, but I very much appreciated it.

I try to tip Uber all the time now.

I've yet to ride in Vegas, but I try to tip all the time in my hometown. I feel like the fare is so much lower than a cab anyway, another couple bucks means nothing to me and a lot to the drivers.

I use to drive daily for Uber but cut way back to maybe a few times a month. Ubers stance is tipping is not necessary. My theory on it is that by law they cannot keep any portion of your tips and they want every penny they can get. In most markets, Uber takes a 25% cut plus the driver has to pay for their own gas and such. Tips help a ton.

I heard about 90% of the time people telling me they would tip me but had no cash, so I went and got a square reader and no shock, have only used it twice. When they tell me they would tip but no cash and I mention it and they all the sudden do not have their card with them either.

I usually tip a $5 each way. I love having a reduced fare, but don't want the driver penalized for the reduced fare, so I tip what I'd tip a cabbie.

There are some things I don't like tipping on, coffee, valet, etc, so I just don't use services where I don't really want to tip. (Except for handpays. I'd rather tip my cocktail waitstaff more than someone who shows up for a handpay...but that's not a service I'll turn down if I get it!)

I do wish Uber would let you add the tip like lyft does though....

I used to be a loyal UBER rider, but after lots of problems (and a moral dilemma supporting the company), i've moved to LYFT. Tipping in app is great, they have better drivers and competitive prices. Only wished I switched earlier.

IWANNABEINVEGAS-who in their right mind is going to give you their CC details on your square reader??? Are you kidding me with that comment?

I mostly use Lyft and always tip in Cash rather than adding the tip in the app. The drivers always seem appreciative.

Now that Lyft has grown and become as prevalent and quick as Uber in major markets, I've begun using it exclusively because of the tip feature on the app, as I often don't carry a lot of cash/small bills.
