If the restaurant is set up for takeout, then no. I've heard arguments that the staff should be rewarded for packaging up your food but if that's the business model, why do I have to act like they did something extra? If I was at a restaurants and they didn't normally offer take out, that would be different. Normally, in that situation, I am already dining and for some reason need to take another meal home so it's padding for a tip I was already going to give.

In this particular case, the reason you are tipping at the butcher shop is because they ARE performing a service above and beyond just cutting the meat. Carrying your heavy purchase to the car is the tippable part of the transaction. The actual purchase of the meat is not - a butcher is supposed to custom cut the meat.

To be clear, the term "tip" is generally a couple of bucks and jingling money that won't be going back into my wallet...round up. Now, the term "chinese takeout"...is from a "real" restaurant...not some strip-mall joint with one chinese kid at the register and a kitchen full of mexicans (I can say that - it's Florida). And, having a short list of places I've frequented for ages, there's generally always something above-and-beyond. Now, if the order is $18.78...no, I won't be adding anything to the $20...keep the change.

Another one I thought about...my barber. I don't know that - growing up - Dad ever tipped the barber. I don't know when I started doing it - certainly not in the Army - but its's something I do.

When I was a kid, my dad would give me a check for the Barber with $1 extra for the tip. He'd make an appointment for after school and I better not miss it.

I make it a point to use cash at my local Chinese restaurant, its a sit down place in a strip center. Someone brings out the order from the kitchen, the cashier rings me up, I hand her cash, collect my change and I'm off. Folks with a credit get a receipt with a line for a tip.

If I sit down and eat, causing an employee to clean up after me than yes I tip. If I am picking up my food and consuming elsewhere than no. You didn't have to do anything but package my food and ring me up. I do tip the bartender always after ordering though.

I do tip a couple bucks at my neighborhood local pizza place when I pick up a pie to go but don't if I pick up from Pizza Hut.

I think the tip line on the credit card receipt is standard for restaurants. I think the credit card machines are programmed for it whether that restaurant expects tips or not. I don't get offended or upset when I see that. Now, if I was in a carry out place and saw suggested tips on my receipt, then I would annoyed.

If when I get there, the food is ready for me, I'll leave them a couple of bucks. But, if I have to wait for a while, I don't leave anything. Usually the people packing up everything aren't the waitstaff, so they're getting paid more, and don't count on tips as much.

There's this ice cream parlor that I sometimes go to, a little mom and pop place. I go in there to get a cone with sprinkles and ask how much. The guy behind the counter says $6 ( it's NYC ) and pushes the tip jar towards me.

I did not tip. I wanted to call the owner but by the tie I got home I was over it.

I find this interesting... there was a similar post earlier in the thread. Why would you treat staff at a chain or franchise operation differently than "local" joints?

I also agree with the philosophy that if I'm picking-up and consuming elsewhere, I don't tip... except for the donut shop...for some reason I always tip the folks at out local shop.

Local v. Franchise: in my experience (Sam's NY Pizza, Sub Shack, China Yuan and Yummy House, Jazzy's BBQ, Alex's BBQ [Tampa Florida venues]) are all neighborhood operations (e.g. within three miles of the ranch) that have been in business since we moved here. We know one another. The owners work there and we see one another at the gym and grocery stores. We're connected. Franchises tend to be corporate venues, operated by teens or twenty-somethings who rotate in and out on an as needed / class schedule permits. Not a real feeling of investment at the customer facing end. And interestingly, I can't recall ever being given - gratis - anything, no matter how small (free drink, garlic knots, 'test this new recipe for me') from one of the franchise spots, so I'm inclined to minimize our interactions.

Ultimately: do they perform the same task? Sure. What are the odds that six months from now I'll see the same kid at Panera / McDonald's? Not too good. What are the odds that the counter folks at Sam's & Sub Shack will still be there? Pretty good. It's all about 'the feel'. Subjective.

See...it never occurred to me to tip at a donut shop...and part of that could be tied to eating donuts on a semi-annual basis. No frequency...no investment...no connection.

Now...what if a cocktail waitress ran a chinese takeout at our favorite casino and we purchased some General Tso's to take back to the room after she brought us a cocktail...how much do we tip?

I do not generally tip for takeout. One place where I buy coffee beans, you get a free coffee if you buy a pound. I toss a buck into the jar for that. I tip carhops a buck or so for takeout because the kid took the order and brought the bag out to me.

In a restaurant I start at 20 percent and go up or down from there depending on the quality of the service. In places where I am known, I tip more. Sometimes it pays off in special favors, but I never expect them.

    This!
    Picking up pizza? No
Getting my order from a fast-food drive-thru? No
Getting my subway sandwich, chips & drink? No
Picking up a chicken-fried steak, with mashed potatoes & cream gravy, along with a thick slice of Texas Toast from one of my sport's bars that I frequent? Absolutely! Typically, 10%, rounded up to the next dollar.
This is especially important if it's at a place you frequent for drinks!

Funny, because I tip at the donut shop as well... weird that I (we) make that exception.

Now...when you say "donut shop"...are we talking about an easily recognizable national chain or is this mom-n-pop?
