Trips to Las Vegas
40
We'll be driving to Palm Springs via Reno and Las Vegas in a few days. After ten days in PS, we'll be heading back to LV with friends.

We decided to drive via Reno (from Vancouver) even though the route via Idaho/Utah is shorter). Perhaps the $18/night rate at Harrahs Reo influenced us ... ;)

After Reno, we have two nights at Excalibur (Mar 2, 3) before driving to PS. I'll try to post some pics and thoughts from both Reno and Vegas.

Any requests welcome.

I'll see if I can get those added to SO's Apple playlist, Richard .... ;). We usually start the day with "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson.

Got some more "weather" coming thru Northern Nevada on Sunday into Monday morning, but then there should be several dry days... hope you hit them!

Thanks, smartone - I've been following weather forecasts all the way down. We cross the Cascades at Williamette Pass (5100'). Snow Sun/Mon but, as you say, by Wed+ it seems to be sunny (although cool/cold). Hopefully, Vegas will be in the 70s at least.

Leaving in about 40 hours (doesn't time crawl the closer it gets ... ;)

Staying at Harrah's Reno for the startling sum of $18 (plus the usual). Main benefit is the valet parking, so won't have to unload all the golf clubs, etc, from the van. We won't have a lot of time in Reno ... a quick visit to the surrounding properties (Cal Neva, Eldorado, Silver Legacy). Will spend a bit of time at a bar playing VP to rehydrate after a 7+ hour drive. Brew Brothers looks like a decent place for dinner (unless anyone has another suggestion).

We'll arrive late afternoon in Vegas, staying at Excalibur. Ridiculous cost, resort fee and parking, but it's an expensive weekend. Probably will spend a chunk of gambling time at Orleans.

We have five, MyVegas rewards between us. The 2/1 NFI (which, hopefully is still a $35 credit). Two x Exc breakfast buffets (it's hard to ruin eggs, ham, etc.). Plus, we each have the $25 Free Play ... we'll see if they're honoured per the discussion about booking the hotel via an MLife promo.

Our kids gave us tix to Jay Leno on Friday night. Should be a good show. Otherwise, a lot of walking the Strip.

We leave for Palm Springs Saturday morning, but we're back to Vegas ten days later with friends.

For food I really enjoy Cafe Central at Silver Legacy. I had a great 11:30 PM NY Steak dinner there a year or so ago. I was surprised at the quality of the steak and sides at that time of night. They have a good menu with lots of options. Last fall I tried the prime rib at the Circus Circus Steakhouse....meh. Lacked flavor. Probably wouldn't go back, but dinner service at the bar was very professional. I'm not a fan of Hash House A Go Go at Harrah's because it seems I pay extra for the big food presentation and large portions that I don't want to eat. I miss Napa Cafe that used to be at Harrah's Reno.

Thanks, @RedChip - I appreciate the info. We'll probably more at Silver Legacy so will check it out. I'm also stopping there in April on the way home.

Have a safe trip!!! Jay Leno will be a blast. I saw him last year at the Mirage. He is really funny!!

20170301_170446.webp Made it to Harrah's Reno after 900 miles driving in two days. At least today was sunny, although there's still lots of snow in Oregon and N. California (fortunately, not on the road but for over Williamette Pass in Oregon).

Managed to get an upgraded room at Harrah's. Nothing special but a newer room on a high floor, facing south (see pic).

Beers in Gift Shop ... 4 for $22; 6 for $22.40. I bought six.

Will 'hit the town' in a bit and see how nice the machines will be, then have some dinner.

Tomorrow is another 8 hour drive to Vegas.

Sunny, but chilly here in the early morning. Sun just poking over the ridge at 6:45. Short night yesterday ... managed to win about $40 then put most of it back. Dinner at Brew Bros - had already enough beer so had wine with dinner. Fish tacos and quesadillas were decent.

Another 400+ miles and we're in Vegas later today. Weather seems to be cooperating, at least.
