    My Trip Report

Hey gang! Hope everyone is staying healthy and not going too stir crazy! :peace:

I’ve been looking through my phone lately, trying to get a little Vegas fix, and I realized that I probably had enough pics to do a half-assed TR of the trip I took just after Christmas last year. I know that I had a blast on this trip. But I hope that I have enough photos - and am able to remember enough - to make this a bearable read for you guys.

This trip happened just after Christmas of last year. I believe the dates were Dec. 26-30. I was solo on the first night and joined by my sister, BIL and a couple of mutual friends of ours for the rest of the trip.

The trip really started off on the wrong foot. My first flight was delayed by about 35-40 minutes, which wouldn’t have been a big deal had my layover not been 41 minutes. So, I was definitely sweating a bit. Fortunately, we made up plenty of time and managed to deplane several minutes early. I did my best OJ impression (running through an airport, not murdering people!) and made it to my gate just in time to see that my plane hadn’t yet arrived. Thanks for the heads-up, United app.

Long story short, the flight continued to be delayed, and delayed…and delayed for 5+ more hours! Evidently, our plane was coming from San Diego where there was a long weather delay. The cruel irony is that I specifically chose a flight that went through IAD rather than ORD as I was worried about Chicago weather in late December…and it was f’ing San Diego weather that screwed me!:bang:

This was a big kick in the pants. I was already missing the majority of my favorite VMBers by a few days, but I had hoped to be able to meet up with my virtual pal and VMB TR legend, @MikeOPensacola on his last night in town. With the delays, I wouldn’t arrive until well after midnight and Mike had an early flight the next morning.

I drowned my sorrows with MANY gin and tonics and a pretty damn tasty burger at a place with Michael Symon’s name on the billboard. It was a damn expensive layover!

Okay, enough belly-aching. I eventually arrived a bit after midnight. Fortunately, I called and let them know of my situation, so they held my high floor fountain view room. Thanks, Cosmo! :blowkiss:

I unpacked and hit the casino ASAP. I knew I had to make up for lost time, so I couldn’t be bothered waiting for CWs to come around. I went straight to the bartops! Only managed one nice hit, but I did get a night’s worth of booze in just a few hours!
    7040BCD0-661D-437A-A25F-B227FF978E32.jpeg

Understandably, I didn’t get started too early on day two. Breakfast/brunch was definitely out of the question. But I did manage to get myself respectable in time for lunch at Jaleo. I did the $30 three-course lunch special.

The “Ultimate” Gin and Tonic…or whatever they call it. It’s damn good, whatever you wanna call it.

    Paella

The meal was delicious and the perfect amount of food for lunch. (I forgot to snap a pic of the first course – kind of a Spanish take on a Caesar salad.)

After lunch, I did a few laps of Cosmo to see what was new. Then I had to head over to Aria to get the room for my sister and BIL.

Is it really weird that I always have to snap a pic of this giant phallus?

Then back to Cosmo for some cocktails at Vesper. I can’t remember whether this was the traditional Aviation or their new-fangled twist on that drink. I know I tried them both, but I only have one pic on my phone. I also remember watching the end of a few good bowl games while I was there…remember sports?
    239DE7C7-DABA-4C0C-BC42-6F9BD704FD09.jpeg

I’m sure I did a bunch of gambling that afternoon since I knew I’d be playing tour guide once the rest of the crew arrived. But, the lack of photos in my phone lead me to believe that it did not bear fruit!

    More later...

Everyone else was arriving at Aria around dinnertime, so I decided to eat at Bardot so we could meet up…plus, it’s probably my favorite restaurant in Vegas.

I don’t know…but, if I ordered it, it almost certainly has gin and from the looks of it, some egg whites.

    Espresso crème brûlée

Everything was outstanding with the exception of the dessert. The Madeleines were delicious but the crème brûlée was pretty meh, unfortunately.

Once everyone got unpacked and ready for the night, we headed for our late reservation at Rose.Rabbit.Lie. It was an absolute blast! Sis and I went here a few years back and had a great time. But it is even more fun with a group. The singers and dancers were a hoot. But, as I’ve mentioned before, the band is the star of the show! If you want a fun, if pricey, dinner/show, check this place out!

Our reservations were pretty late – I want to say 10 or 10:30 – so no one wanted to eat more than a small plate or two. Plus, I wasn’t eating at all. So, the waiter was, somewhat understandably, noticeably miffed at first. But, as our bar tab ballooned, he became much friendlier with each round!

This is the cocktail I was drinking. I don’t know what it was called (again, I’m sure there was gin in it) but it was super tasty! But the sugar rim was waaaaay too sweet, so I had them hold that for the remainder of the night.

The chocolate terrarium (or whatever it is called) dessert. It was absolutely gorgeous and a lot of fun. Plus, it was more than enough for the five of us. But it’s really more about the experience (and photo opportunity) than it is the taste. Don’t get me wrong, it was really good. Just not great.

It was an honor to dine next to the commemorative plates of Generalissimo Triceratops and Lady Llama!

I’m positive that I was more than a little drunk after leaving RRL (probably at closing time!). But, according to Mr. iPhone, I managed to punch the buttons skillfully enough to snag a handy before hitting the hay. (Someone remind me to find that W-2G…I want to see how drunk that signature looks!):kill:

The next morning, we all managed to get up and make it down to Wynn for our 11 o’clock reservations at the La Cave weekend brunch. All I can say about this brunch is wow! So delicious. Sooooo much food. And a great value at $49 plus $29 for the AYCD booze option. I did a bad job getting pictures. But I know that @Flowers put up a great review in one of her TRs not too long ago. So, go check that out if you want a better representation of the brunch than my few pics will give.

I’m pretty sure we tried about everything on the menu. And while there were a few misses, they were far outnumbered by the home runs. My favorites were the cream cheese pancakes and the short rib hash. The Bloody Mary bar was fun as well, with about any option you could want (including Slim Jims :)).

After brunch, we showed the first timers around Wynn and then did a walk down the strip trying to see as much as we could. Again, I didn’t get too many pictures. Sorry.

The conservatory was an absolute madhouse!

Eventually, we made it back to Cosmo and decided to grab some booze from the sundry shop and head up to my room to watch one of the college football semifinal games (Clemson-OSU, if memory serves). The first timers were in awe of the view from the balcony and spent about every commercial and halftime out there soaking up the sights.

After the game, the rest of the group all headed back to their hotels to get ready for Absinthe while I went down to the casino to pay for my room. It looks like I got one decent hit, but I’m sure that I ended up losing far more than what the show would have cost me. Sigh.

Another great report (so far)!..It is nice to mix things up and enjoy Vegas with close friends and family. These are still great pics. I still haven't been to Rose.Rabbit.Lie, but that has been definetly been on my list! (That dessert looks fun!).

Looking forward to hearing your take on Absinthe! That is one show I have not seen yet.

So, while the others were at Absinthe, I went full on degen in the casino. And unfortunately, I just wasn’t getting the virtual cards this trip. But you know that I can always cheer myself up with a nice hunk of pampered cow! So, I eventually made my way over to Jean Georges for dinner.

I’m a big fan of JG. It’s great for solo diners, the steaks are top notch and the menu is usually pretty interesting compared with most traditional steakhouses. (Of course, I didn’t exactly stray from the usual suspects on this night…)

Asian Gin and Tonic or something or other. It tasted as bland as the presentation would lead you to expect.

I love that they just put out a big ol’ glob of butter with the bread. Who doesn’t just want to dive straight into that thing?!

You can’t go wrong with bacon, bleu cheese and tomatoes. But this is definitely not the most spectacular wedge salad you’re going to come across.

Wagyu (whatever that means ) rib cap. Not the most photogenic thing in the world but it was delicious!

    9F4513FE-327D-44CE-8669-2EE9200B3CF4.jpeg
Crispy potatoes with hot peppers and a yogurt sauce. Very tasty – pretty spicy but the yogurt sauce gives your mouth plenty of relief.

Overall, dinner was fantastic. I wish I would have had room for dessert because JG has about the best apple pie you’re going to find. But I guess that La Cave brunch plus about 10 straight hours of hard drinking curbed my appetite a bit.

As I was finishing the meal, my BIL stopped by and joined me for a few after dinner cocktails and we watched the end of a few basketball games if my memory serves me well.

After dinner, my BIL and I met up with the rest of the gang downstairs. We all had a cocktail at the Lobby Bar (is that what it’s called? You know the one I’m talking about). We were feeling pretty beat after a day of eating, boozing and walking. So, they went off to grab a quick bite to eat before calling it a night and I headed back to Cosmo for a bit more gambling. Unfortunately, it looks like I only had one decent hit:
    EADA0280-9FFA-4536-9870-3F4DCEAEC825.jpeg

On the last day of the trip we all met for lunch at Milos. It was phenomenal, as usual, and the first timers were as impressed as I always am. Sorry, I completely forgot to get photos (this trend would unfortunately continue for the rest of the trip). We pretty much tried 75% of what was on the lunch menu - I remember seeing octopus, tomato salad, crab cakes, lamb chops, salmon, sea bream, karidopita (sp?) and yogurt with fruit on the table. As mentioned, everything was very good.

The first timers had been intrigued by the craps tables the entire trip. But, understandably, they weren’t too keen on playing for center-strip minimums. So, we decided to head downtown after lunch. The rest of the crew left immediately after lunch so that they could do some downtown sightseeing, while I took another stab at getting some of my money back in the Cosmo casino (with no luck). Later, we all met up at Main Street Station to play craps.

We found an empty table – perfect for teaching the rookies – and for the most part, we had a blast. We didn’t win much. But I believe we all walked away up a few bucks and we indulged in plenty of free cocktails. And the superstition that female virgins are lucky at the craps table definitely held up. My friend went on a huge run on her very first time rolling, making several points and holding the dice for what seemed like a half hour.

Unfortunately, the surly craps crew tried their best to be a buzzkill. As one might expect of a first-timer, my friend had a few rolls that didn’t quite make it to the end of the table and (gasp!) actually threw the dice off the table once. :rolleyes2: You would have thought she had reached across the table and tried to grab a stack of chips the way they yelled at her. She was getting to the point where she didn’t even want to keep rolling, she was so nervous. Finally, I had had enough and completely broke character. I went the F off.:grrr: I didn’t yell, swear or call anyone names. But I did remind the crew that the table was dead empty when we arrived and was now completely full and that the entire table was tipping with regularity. And that, instead of yelling at my friend for doing stuff that happens hundreds of times a day at every craps table in the world, that they should be thanking us profusely for bringing the casino potential revenue and them tips– neither of which were happening at that table before we arrived.

Fortunately, that was all it took. After that, the table was pretty quiet for a few minutes but as my friend kept hitting numbers the mood picked right back up. And the crew completely changed their tone. (I probably need to be confrontational more often!)

Eventually, the table cooled down a bit and we left to try our hand at BJ. And before we left, all the Hawaiians on the other end of the table came down to tip my friend. She couldn’t believe it and was thrilled.

Our luck at BJ wasn’t quite as good. But the drinks kept coming and we had a great time. Unfortunately, we had to play on a 6:5 table as it was the only one that could accommodate us all. But we all felt that having us all at the same table was worth far more than the few bucks we had to give up in potential return.

This day was actually my birthday and my sister and BIL were planning on treating me to dinner at Le Cirque. But after all the drinking, we all felt that we just wouldn’t get as much enjoyment out of the meal as we would want to so we cancelled our reservations. In hindsight, I’m pretty bummed about that decision as I still have yet to eat at Le Cirque. And who knows what the Vegas we return to will look like? I would certainly hope that Le Cirque would be a survivor. But, at this point in time, I’m pretty much expecting the worst and hoping to be pleasantly surprised if Vegas makes it through with fewer scars than I would imagine.

The rest of the night, we hung out at Cosmo, drinking and low rolling on slots. Eventually, the rest of the group decided to try Cosmo’s newish fancy food court. But you know me. I have to make every calorie count when I’m in Vegas, so I found my way to the bar at Scarpetta.

    8DDD3096-A618-430E-981A-C0B212F5698C.jpeg
This salad was delicious. It had gorgonzola, walnuts and, I believe, pears (or maybe apples).

    8221FD4F-7233-44CC-8F43-6BA24C5EB76B.jpeg
    Wonderful, as usual, lambchops.

And that’s pretty much it for the trip. I believe I had a very early flight the next morning so, I took one more shot at glory (and failed miserably) before calling it a night, while sis showed the rest of the group a few of the center-strip casinos they hadn’t seen yet.

It was a pretty ugly trip gambling-wise. But it was so fun to be able to hang out with my sis (who is my best friend in the world ) as well as show some of my friends my favorite place.

Thanks for reading. Sorry for the lack of photos at then end of the report.

Sorry, @amk121 , I can’t give you a review. In Vegas, if it doesn’t involve booze, food or gambling, I have a hard time finding room on the schedule for it. I let the rest of the group see the show while I ate, boozed and pissed away a good part of my retirement account.
