I teach middle school science and coach about everything. Needless to say I get ran down from time to time. About 10 years ago a sixth grader said, "when nothing's going right, just go left". Love that tidbit of sixth grade wisdom, saves my sanity during trying times.

Not really advice, but came about in a backwards way.

When my wife asked my Grandmother what is hardest thing about growing old? Her reply was “losing all your friends”

I have remembered that and make time to be with friends. So true.

Probably during an Oprah episode, from Maya Angelou - “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

    • Plan for the worst, hope for the best

    • Read the fine print

    • Check your sources

    • Under-commit, over-deliver

    • You don't have to like it, you just have to do it. (On anything you know you need to do, but don't want to.)

    • Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me

    • But the biggie will make me a sucker in many peoples' eyes: The mantra that stuck with me, is that it's better to give someone the benefit of the doubt and be screwed over, than to screw someone over. The latter haunts you much, much longer, and is a heavy cross to bear. You can't force other people to be honorable, but you can choose to be. (Though you also don't want to be a door mat. Once screwed over, lesson learned, no "fool me twice, shame on me!") Luckliy I heard this at a young age and stuck to it. I have late nights due to being a worrywart on other things, but I've never been kept up late second guessing how I've treated someone, and it's been a blessing not having that burden!

My boss Mike, around my 18th birthday "You're bright and you got a lot going for you. If you dont get caught up with one of these fast little girls around town, you'll be successful. Keep it in your pants son. Just keep it in your pants and everything will be fine"

A friend of mine used to say it a lot. I’ve failed to adhere to it a few times, but it’s always proved true.

“Don’t let your mouth write checks that your ass can’t cash.”

I feel like I found a lot of sayings after getting halfway there on my own,

folks were very frugal, so I eventually found solace in sayings that endorsed "investing in quality" like
"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."
    "Buy once, cry once"
"Never skimp on anything that is between you and the floor (shoes, tires, mattresses)"
learned this is true about car repair

    1. Always use both hands.

    2. Fear of the thing is usually worse than the thing itself (yes, this is kind of a reboot of FDR).

    3. First Amendment doesn't require you to speak.

"Take care of yourself", in reference to your health, from my mother, a Registered Nurse, starting in Sicily and Naples in WW 2, then full and part time in Detroit. I've tried to, and I'm doing all right.
