Over the years, what was THE best piece of advice you've gotten and you still adhere to it currently? Do you remember who gave you this nugget of information?

Live below your means. From the very wealthy owner of a small company I worked at just after high school.
I wish I wrote these down back in the day. One a day he told me to never buy a suit on credit. Save up the money to pay cash, then you might decide you'd rather have the cash instead of a new suite.

One day (decades ago) his brother mentioned buying a car. Together they decided it would be best to save up the money so the started putting money in a bank account. A new car was never purchased, they were happier knowing they could "Buy the whole damn lot".

edit to add. Back in the day his father or grandfather owned one of the two gas pumps in Macon, Ga.

always tell the truth. It is better in the long run, and that way you don't have to remember your lies - from my Mom when we were youngsters

I kinda have taken that to the extreme throughout my life, for better or worse. I always tell someone the truth, even if they don't like the answer...............................

My wife always suggests that I could have answered more "tactfully" in some of my responses. I always reply with " Well, they asked the question!"

I used to travel a lot for business. I got this piece of advice from an old boss.
It doesn't matter what the name of the hotel you stay at as long as its new.
He wasn't wrong. I've stayed in major chains that were very run down.
I've stayed in new low end hotel chains and they were comfortable.

My mom...save something for yourself out of every paycheck. Work all the overtime that is offered. Over the years that evolved into me maxing out the IRA, then 401-k and finally the Roth IRA. I retired at 55 and always give her the credit for being able to do that.

Dad died when I was 12, so mom was the head of the household.

"Dean, hang onto this silver dollar. As long as you keep it, you'll never be broke."

Turns out the old boy was right. And in case you're ponderin'...yeah, I still have it.

"Get it in writing" has served me well as a general principle... one of my real estate mentors taught me this when I was working as his assistant. I've found it's important not just for the sake of having proof of something that's been told/promised to you... but also because anyone who won't give you something in writing is usually refusing to do so for a reason, which is potentially telling of their true motives.

My Dad imparted many words of wisdom. A few that come to mind...

You can't control what other people say or do but you have complete control over your reaction.

Never lie unless you have a perfect memory; you don't.

Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability.

Everyone is playing the hand they were dealt, be kind.

Live as if your were going to die tomorrow, prepare as if you were going to live forever.

If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.

It got me fired from my next job, but I still got the family.

Don't taunt your draft board. (My Grandmother) I take this to mean don't spit in the eye of someone that has the real juice.

Kid, save your money (Sergeant Frank).

If you're trying to solve a problem make sure you're looking in the right room.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

    And also,

The grass isn't usually greener, it's just brown in another part of the lawn.

    Really good advice so far!

Mine was "There's no such thing as a free lunch".

Also "If it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't". Or something like that.

Your Dad is a wise man @breanna61

My Mom’s mantra to all of us kids growing up when we came to her with doubts or worries:

Did you do your very best? If your answer is yes, then that is all that matters.
