First time going to Lake Tahoe and Reno. Mid October for dates and splitting time at both cities. Staying at Harrahs - how are these hotels ? And any good suggestions for activities beside gambling ?

If you are in Tahoe, and you have a car, drive down to South Lake Brewing Company. Great beers, relaxed attitude. Also if you are looking for a good burger, just around the corner-ish from SLBC is the Burger Lounge. Breakfast try Bert's or Ernie's on Hwy 50 at the edge of town. Dive bar... Turn 3 about 1/4 mile past the Hotel 6 on the Cali side. I spent a weekend there for a college hockey tournament (Go Ducks!), and in the winter, it is skiing and gambling and drinking.

You may want to check out @marksind recent thread about his trip to Reno... Random Reno Trip Notes

Unlike Vegas, the various hotel/casinos are spread out and downtown Reno is nothing like Fremont St., so don't be too disappointed. I often stay at the Peppermill which is more like the big resorts that you'll find in Vegas. It's a short drive from downtown. If you have a car, it'll be easy to go casino hopping, as well as checking out nearby places like Virginia City which has some cool shops, bars/restaurants, etc.
