Snickers...it's not an issue about playing... it's about "position" and which hand you are given from each deck (1st, 2nd, 3rd & so on).
For some players (typically those playing head-to-head), they want to continue receiving the same hand sequence they have been up to that point.
Yes, it's just classic 'gambler's superstition', but as a courtesy, it's no big deal to ask and accommodate them.
It's the same thing with those who call out for "same dice", or take all of their bets 'off' following a no-roll.
On a two-deck blackjack table, I would never dream of entering mid-deck - my presumption is "they may be counting"...even if they're not, I let them finish the deck & then I get in...(didn't used to have to worry about this when "no mid-deck entry" was prevalent.)
I don't think I have ever met a 3-card or UTH player who cared about another player getting in when they were playing solo...but I've seen plenty who care about thier 'position' in the sequence.

The guy should have just sat in #1 in the first place. He's one of those "it's all about me" types who doesn't have any idea as to what common courtesy means. There's more than 1 seat for a reason. So people can play.

The amount he was betting is completely irrelevant. It's all just units. $500 to one person, can be as valuable as $5 to another.

Yeah, I got that. And agree that if he wanted seat one, then take seat one. I get the whole idea of sitting in seat one and always getting 'my' cards no matter how many are at the table or who comes and goes.

I'm usually the opposite. I kinda like the last seat in UTH. Not sure why. And one time I got screwed because of it. Playing in the last seat in AC with two other guys who were friends (not my friends...they were friends) in seats 2 & 3. Their buddy comes over and sits in seat 4. Never played the game before. Asked how you play, plops his money down, and nails quads on his first hand. That would have been my hand had he not shown up.

And I always seem to get killed when it's only me and the dealer.

That is hard to take. Like my pair of Kings in 3cp first hand when the dealer had 3 nines!

There is only one place (one casino family), where I prefer to play UTH alone...Aria, and select other mlife properties who hand deal UTH, but where the dealer gets the last two cards of the deal, in sequence. I don't think the house gets a statistical advantage in dealing players one card at a time, while they get two cards in sequence, but my "gambler's superstition" doesn't like it. When playing heads up at these tables, the player gets two cards in sequence and the dealer gets two cards in sequence...much like the automatic card dealers.

That's one of the reasons I love playing Pai Gow. Doesn't matter where you sit, all the positions are getting dealt regardless of players. No pressure. They used to deal High Card Flush like that when it first came out, but they stopped that pretty quick.

For those saying the person was rude, would you feel differently if they asked if they could take the 1/2 seats before you sat down? There is still preasure on you I feel, but would that make a difference?

I have seen this happen and never bothers me. I'm actually more annoyed at the people that come in for 2 hands and then leave.

If the player asked to have the number one seat before I was dealt a hand, I would oblige although I still think he should have been sitting there in the first place. If the player told me I had to move, I would think it would be rude of him. I also get annoyed when people only come in for a couple of hands.

I have spent the vast majority of my table play at 3CP, C4P, and UTH. I've never once asked to join a table, and no one has ever asked to join a table I'm already playing at. Nor would I expect them to.

Re: the scenario described by the OP, superstition is fine. But the incumbent player should have already been sitting at first base if it mattered to him. End of story.

But my superstition is to always take the seat to the right of the lonely miserable guy.

Holly shit!!! You can't be serious.
So when you play Craps, no one else can play unless they ask you?
If playing the slots, no one else can play in that row unless they ask you?
When taking a piss, no one else can use the urinals unless they ask you?

Certain people can put a damper on a vacation and its someone like who believe others must ask to join a game.
