Based on the following from the SWA sight, I do not think so. But - maybe.

If you decide not to travel, as long as you cancel your flight at least 10 minutes before its scheduled departure, the funds used to pay for a nonrefundable ticket are normally valid for one year from the date of purchase. However, in recognition of the current travel environment, we are extending the expiration date of some travel funds:
    • Customers' funds that have expired or will expire between March 1 – May 31, 2020, will now expire June 30, 2021.
    • Any travel funds created because of a flight cancellation between March 1 – May 31, 2020, will have an expiration date of June 30, 2021

I was real glad SW finally added an easy "My Travel Funds" link. I wasn't quite as happy when clicking it brought up "No Travel Funds Found." After ransacking the place, I found copies of my confirmation numbers and saw that my funds are still there. Good try SW, but no cigar!

Unfortunately, funds I had planned on using before their March 16 expiration are no longer there. It would have been nice if SW added time, all things considered, and I just hope I'll get to use the remaining funds before they expire mid-September.

PS: I just saw the post above mine, so it looks like I'll have to call SW if I'm able to book something before June 30.

From what I understand, you do not get a refund for Early Bird.

The policy update as of 3/15/2020

In recognition of the current travel environment, we are extending the expiration date of some travel funds:
    • Customers’ funds that have expired or will expire between March 1-May 31, 2020, will now expire June 30, 2021
Any newly created travel fund because of a flight cancellation between March 1-May 31, 2020, will have an expiration date of June 30, 2021
    ------------------------------------------------
So, it depends on when you ORIGINALLY booked.

I spoke to a SW rep last week because I was confused about some of my travel funds. I rebooked some flights in early March and ended up with a travel credit that expires in October (because I originally booked that flight last October) She told me that since the Travel Funds were created in March, they would be updated to show a June 2021 expiration. However, this could take 3 weeks or so to be updated. At this point, I'm just waiting for that expiration date to update so I can use it for a flight later in the year.

I'll update this if I see that the expiration has changed!

I question if this is only for a cancellation of the flight by SWA, or if it is valid for the "I changed my mind" variety of cancellation.

The full text of that announcement gives the answer:

"If you decide not to travel, as long as you cancel your flight at least 10 minutes before its scheduled departure, the funds used to pay for a nonrefundable ticket are normally valid for one year from the date of purchase. When I spoke to them last week, she said that I qualified for this, and I basically just canceled and rebooked because of a price change. But time will tell if I actually get my funds extended.

Yes, this language is what I am banking on. Seems like it would be so much easier for them to extend all travel funds that expire this year by an additional 6 months. I have $1000+ in travel funds that expire either this June (because of flights originally booked last June) or this October (for flights originally booked last October).

The policy as written would suggest that I book flights using the June and October travel funds and then cancel them within the next few weeks. Seems like it would be easier for Southwest and customers if they did a universal straight extension.

I wonder if they will eventually do something more like that. On one hand, it make for happy customers. On the other hand, it may remove serious REAL $$$ from their future bookings. Hard to say.

Yeah, I was thinking that too but savvy travelers -- really any SW customer who doesn't want to burn money who is in the spot like I am -- are going to go through all of the contortions anyway to prevent hard cold cash from going down the drain.

I agree with 6 months. that would be a fair enough extension.
it would be a good gesture to keep loyal SWA customers.

I have had my outgoing and incoming flight times changed, but at least it's only been within an hour or so.
Hasn't been Canceled yet! Still hoping.

So far, Southwest has not canceled any of my flights. The next trip (supposed to be to Florida Keys in a couple of weeks) will be canceled by based on current conditions (but may not be by Southwest), so my travel funds will likely grow. If I can't find another use for them, I may buy a higher priced ticket for my wife to get more points towards A-List. She made A-List late last year but we won't get there this year with trips going bye bye one by one. If I can fins a way to add trips with the funds, that will be my first choice.

Our flight to FLL next week was cancelled. I had purchased it using "travel funds" as our plans evolved. When I called about it yesterday, they offered a refund to the card since they cancelled it. I gladly accepted. I also had to change a city pair within the rules shown but I could not do it online. Took care of that on the same call.

Our trip has "evolved" further...we'll be in the backyard next week!

Yes you lose your Early Bird if you cancel your flight. If I read the question right, yes you can use your travel funds to buy Early Bird for a new flight.

Emailed Southwest, Said that within 30 days they will Email us a certificate covering our Early Birds Fees on our cancelled flights, that can be used for a new flight, not for Early Bird fees, for a year. Stupid me deleted the email, but that is the Gist.
