Will be staying at the Rio on January 1 for one night only.

Anything worth checking out while we are in the area for that night before heading to the Strip the following morning? Palms? Gold Coast? What kind of blackjack do all those 3 casinos have? Good slots?

We stayed there last March for MM, at that time I think if you were a guest it was BOGO on the Voodoo Zipline.

If you place a moderate bet, say $50 or so, at the Book and tip five bucks you will get a hand full of free drink tickets.

For some reason I did really well at the VP in the sports bar next to the Book, the pay tables aren't that great so must have just been lucky.....still fun though.

If you are looking for a cheaper liquor store and not driving the liquor store across the street at the GC has pretty decent prices.

Lots of good food options at the Palms too........FYI, I think the TGI Fridays at the GC is possibly the worst restaurant I have ever been in.

    Have fun....good luck !

If you want some room booze head to the Gold Coast gift shop, very reasonable. Palms used to have a very hip celeb vibe; I never felt it, but I'm sitting at the VP bar. Do try to get upstairs to the Voodoo Lounge, beautiful open air balcony with fantastic Strip view. No don't try this, do this. If you walk to Palms or Gold Coast use the crosswalks; extremely dangerous traffic. Avoid the Gold Coast parking structure at night, very empty. Good trip!

If you like Indian food, the Royal India Bistro restaurant in Rio has a good lunch buffet.

Definitely check out the Gold Coast. In addition to the cheap room booze, it's a fun place to give some play. They also sometimes have a pretty good band playing there, if you want to shake your groove thing a little. Also, if you want to do a little midnight, tipsy bowling, it can be kind of fun.

I haven't been to Rio for about 4 years, but their seafood restaurant was pretty good last time we stayed there.

Rio buffet has slipped in the last couple of years. In my not so humble opinion, the much cheaper buffet at Gold Coast is just as tasty for far less. Rio has also taken out most of the machines I like and Gold Coast has tons of them. There's a new(er) stoplight-controlled crosswalk from the Rio to Gold Coast, well-marked and well-lit on the Gold Coast side.

Yes but still be on guard some cars don't seem to notice the well marked crossing and drive right through it.

Stayed there last month. My friend was there for a conference and I crashed in his room.

The room was perfectly fine (basic 2Q "suite" in old tower, renovated room). Clean, updated, not fancy, plenty of space; about 500 sf or so. However my friend said that some of his colleagues' rooms looked like they hadn't been updated since the place opened 25 (?) years ago. I notice they sometimes have very good deals on the big suites on their website for a couple hundred a night if you are up for a splurge.

I could take or leave the Rio itself but I prefer the location west of the freeway. Gold coast is good for cheap gambling, and GC and Palms both have good coupon promos in ACG and LVA. Orleans is also not far.
Also very close to Chinatown / Little Ethiopia if you want something interesting for dinner. $5 uber ride away. I also like the Golden Tiki bar on Spring Mountain.

I always win on the dollar slots and roulette at Gold Coast. Last time I was there for 1 night they put me in a high roller suite that was really nice! Palms had a great champagne brunch on Sunday. Use the LVA 50%coupon.
