I got an offer from Ameristar, to stay at either of these properties.
(I play at the Black Hawk, CO Ameristar alot)

    3 nights, 60 FP, and $75 food.

Anything redeeming about these places, and/or worth a trip there?

River City is probably the nicest casino in STL. But it's a standard locals casino. The location is bad - it's basically in an industrial area near the river. Inland are older, middle class homes. Nothing special here. But it is closer to downtown than Ameristar.

Ameristar has a better theme (the entryway is well done and you can tell the casino is an old train-style Stations casino) and the hotel is nice. Rooms are all good sized suites. The surrounding area is much better - it's right by the main street area of St. Charles. It is a bit further from downtown, though.

    I've never stayed at RC.

No free alcohol in MO. And casinos allow smoking.

Really, if you want a getaway, they are decent, but it's not LV.

I've played at Ameristar but haven't stayed there. (I should check my account to see what rates I can get!) We did poke around enough in the common areas to know they have a nice setup for the hotel. I liked the few restaurants we tried and St. Charles has a really cool Main Street area with lots of neat shops worth exploring. It's also near the Hollywood property which I haven't visited since it was a Harrah's. It's easy to get around the area for the most part and we found a mall we liked to visit and like going to Forest Park for the museums as well. I think you get more out of places outside of Vegas if you take in more than just the casinos.

Both casinos overall are pretty nice. Ameristar is larger. If you like some older slots also choose Ameristar as River City has only been open since 2008 maybe?

If you won't have a car I probably would suggest Ameristar so you could possibly uber to Hollywood, Main Street St. Charles, or the Streets of St. Charles shopping/restaurant center.

River City is very nice, but if you're without a car, you're pretty stuck there. I like their 1904 Beerhouse and you can use your "mycash" on beer there and it's worth double since it's outside the casino entrance.

If you're a quarter or lower video poker player, Ameristar will be the better choice with a full pay bank of game kings (up to 9/6 JoB) with blue signs to the left of the upstairs bar. They should also still have some STP machines with 9/5 JoB for quarters or Double STP with 7/5 Bonus.

If you play dollars, then River City will have many game kings up to 8/5 Bonus.

Table game rules should roughly be the same at either location.

Live poker players also need to go to Ameristar, river city closed their poker room about a year ago.

They had a shuttle running between the two properties. River city had better casino but I loved ameristar too. Good food. Star lounges were good. Not the best but a really good time. Great staffs at both places.

They did? They are 35 minutes apart.

Now there used to be a shuttle between lumiere place downtown and river city. But pinnacle had to sell off lumiere because the MO gaming commission didn't want them to own 3 of 4 casinos.

I would go to St. Charles, but venture off and also play at the other casino's in the area. The Hollywood is out in the burbs but is very nice. I would also recommend the Casino Queen, right by downtown. Its more of a locals place, but lots of seedy fun!

To be clear, if you are coming from out of town; the casinos are sited as follows:

Hollywood and Ameristar St. Charles are both about 25 minutes West of downtown (maybe a little more or less, I'm guesstimating)

Lumiere Place and Casino Queen are downtown. Casino Queen is across the river in Illinois.

River City is about 15 minutes South of downtown. It roughly 40 minutes from Hollywood and Ameristar St. Charles, as there is no straight shot between them on a highway.

Casino Queen is in Illinois, so no smoking indoors.

Ameristar has pretty nice rooms and a great pool.
