I’ve been coming into town for over 20 years starting in the mid 90’s when I was in college. I’ve been a low roller, mid roller, kinda high roller. I have stories about hookers and blow, getting robbed, getting in fights, big scores, big losses and big swings. I’ve had boring trips and trips I haven’t slept for 2-3 days. I thought I might share one of my trip stories from time to time. They might be boring ...but I also have some that are quite R rated, some NC-17... So with that here is a quick one. About 10-15 years ago I was sitting in the bellagio sportsbook bar and I had weed on me. Now weed is no big deal but before the kids got spoiled having weed in Vegas wasn’t so easy. Anyway I’m sitting next to this couple of elderly folks from the Bay Area and I mention to the older gentleman I was going to my room to smoke a joint. He asked if he could join me. I was pretty shocked. These guys were RV’ing around the west and they seemed affluent and educated. Not the typical activity for a 60-70 year old gentleman. But of course I accepted. We went upstairs and this guy starts chatting about how he traveled around with the dead in his youth. I’m a bit of a deadhead and we struck up a conversation. So we head back down to the bar where his wife is running the video poker and he mentions my affinity for the dead. His wife light up like a firefly and let’s it be known they traveled QUITE extensively with the band. So much that they invite me back to their RV to listen to some master tapes. now this is really a weird scene. These people have money. I can tell. They are older, educated, very personable. I’m not physically in danger with these folks. And when I’m in Vegas I always travel solo and throw myself into any possibility. So after some thought and kore conversation I accept. We cab to some RV park...their RV is easily half a million dollars. It’s insane. Like a mobile penthouse. They put on some music, spark one....through conversation I come to the clear impression these folks made their money making and selling LSD for decades with the dead. Elderly outlaws if you will. do I drop acid with the senior citizens in this random RV park at one in the morning in Vegas when offered? You’re goddam right I did. Night of my life hearing stories about their experiences with the band, their life on the road. Peaking as the sun rose sitting outside with a lovely campfire. Went back to the hotel with my soul fed and an amazing Vegas story to tell. Next time on spudlink adventures I’ll tell you how to get rid of a hooker in your room when you’ve both been doing way too much cocaine!
