Still no complaints against the Spirit staff; they were a class act through the whole thing as always. But obviously there was something else going on behind the scenes; I'm thinking possibly more than just weather somewhere.

Yeah, I wouldn't be standing around in that bedlam. I would do just what comfortablynumb did.

@comfortablynumb sorry to hear of your woes with this fiasco. If it’s a staffing issue, maybe you should consider taking the “Tommy Boy” route and becoming flight attendants to get the plane off the ground and a free flight! :D

Hope it all goes well for you in the morning.

My Oct 1 flight is a direct flight on Spirit in the AM. I just now bought a flight on Oct 1 in the evening on Southwest as a hedge (using points from last year's cancelled flights). I can cancel my Southwest flight while seated on the plane. If Spirit cancels, I just fly out 12 hours later.

Not necessarily. Southwest delayed a flight three times then cancelled a flight on me at JFK while I was waiting in line to check in. I have nothing against them. What I do have against Southwest are their prices right now. $700 for an individual one way ticket from MCO to LAS is robbery. I can book round trip for two people on non-stop Spirit flights for that price, including adding on the boost for picking seats and checked luggage. To each their own..

There are likely 1,000 people at MCO right now that would take that $700 ticket.

Only thing I disagree with in the article are the claims that Spirit's customer service was bad.. for us, they were great. The employees handling the delays and cancellations at the airport were dealing with a lot of crap and they handled it like pros. On the phone, they were very apologetic and handled the rebooking quickly. I haven't given up on Spirit by any means.

I agree, I've never had issues with Spirit's customer service. (American Airlines on the other hand.....)

but every airline is different and passengers have different experiences. I think the attitudes in general are a little much, I would prefer to be grounded during a thunderstorm rather than flying through one.

It looks like AA ended up cancelling about 17% of their flights for the day. Major inconvenience for thousands of folks, and I'm sure that AA's resources were strained as they did the rebooking and administrivia. They are, however, a Real Airline (tm) and have a gazillion flights on which to rebook, plus agreements with other Real Airlines to help absorb the load in cases like this.

Now on the other hand (along with four fingers, a thumb and a wart) you have Spirit, which runs on a shoestring and apparently does not book stranded pax with competing airlines. When they have issues, it can easily snowball and get out of control, as in major meltdown, total cluster{f-bomb}, leaving them with a best option of telling employees to "shelter in place" or change out of uniform and split!

I would never even think about flying Spirit. As long as Southwest is flying I have no reason to fly Spirit. I have other options.

VMB is super tough crowd. As gamblers though we should look at the Math.. Spirit over the last 5 years is a top 4 airline in the country.. Better then southwest, United, Jet blue and American.

How sad is this.. This isn’t a spirit airlines problem this is a society problem. Harassing and threatening anyone is unacceptable.. harassing and threatening crew members who have nothing to do with the delays is even worst. Hope the airlines Identify those responsible and ban them for life from flying.

I'm not feeling good seeing this. A couple days ago I booked one way CLE to LAS in Oct. for $68. Couldn't pass it up. They had some days for $50.
Returning on United so I'll probably make it home. I'm used to Spirit by now. Sort of a combination of flying zoo/greyhound bus.

I heard on local radio that it's because Pilots walked off the job but who knows...
Spirit cancelled on me once years ago and that was the last time I flew with them.
