    My Trip Report

I was in Las Vegas last weekend! I took my friend to Vegas for the first time a few years ago for his 40th birthday. Since then we have tried to book a “guys” trip on one of our birthdays each year. We tried to get some of our other friends to go this year, but no dice. He has desperately needed a weekend away to blow off some steam, and I haven’t been back out to Sin City since last June. We were ready!

I briefly contemplated doing a live trip report, then said “fuck that!” and quickly tossed that idea out of the window. There was enough interesting stuff for a report, though…

What: Spicole’s Mini Trip Report: Cromwell/ Bellagio, April 19-22
    When: April 19-22
Where: Cromwell (Thursday) and Bellagio (Friday & Saturday)

We both enjoyed gambling at the Cromwell and wanted to give it a shot. He has never stayed at the Bellagio and also wanted to try it, so we split our trip between the properties.

    Rooms:
My buddy isn’t much of a gambler, and I hadn’t played enough at CET properties to earn any offers for the Cromwell. We booked in December, then cancelled and re-booked in February when we noticed offers had dropped. On Tuesday my friend saw rates had dropped even MORE, cancelled his res, and re-booked. I pointed out that was within the 72-hour cancellation window and he might get fucked out of the refund on his original reservation. He wasn’t sure… the gambling on the trip started early!

I had an offer for both nights free at Bellagio with $100 resort credit, while he paid ~$280/nt.

    Cromwell:
When we checked in, they still had both reservations for my friend. The front desk clerk got it sorted, and it appears he was NOT charged for his original booking. Win! The rooms were fairly small and dark, but nice. One sink. The showers were good with a rainfall shower head and another “who’s your father?” want attachment. We both had rooms on the 7th floor and we both paid for the “strip” view.

    Bellagio:
We moved over around ~11:00 AM on Friday. My friend checked in online AND paid the $50 early guarantee. The mobile check in lounge was fast and easy. He ended up getting a room at the very end of the West wing in the main tower and had actually scored a Resort Tower King. This was nice because it was bigger, had a double vanity, windows on two sides, windows in the bathroom, jetted tub, and a separate throne room. The downside: I counted off ~130 yards from his room to the elevators.

I dropped my bags in his room and we hit the tables. Inspired by his experience, I did the mobile check in but just put in 3:00 PM for arrival. I received an email about 2:30 saying my room was ready. I got a standard king (blue scheme) on the 26th floor in the main tower, mountain view. (Neither one of us paid for the Fountain View.)

Overall, rooms at both hotels were very good. My friend liked the Cromwell more than B, while I like the spacious Bellagio rooms.

    Gambling

It was a mixed bag trip. I ended the trip down over $3,500. I primarily played craps and blackjack.

    Cromwell:

Gambling conditions at the Cromwell were as good as reported. 100x odds on craps (although the Field only paid 2x on 2 and 12). Single zero roulette on the main floor for $25 min. I bet a crisp $100 on “black” and lost. :( The BJ table on Thursday was $15 min, 3:2, H17, DAS, Surrender, no RSA. Very decent rules.

I saw a couple people “Hit ‘em All” at the craps table on Thursday! They each had $25 on it, so it paid $3,750. (30-1 and 150-1 on the feature bet.) It was pretty wild.

On Friday it was the same rules: $15 min, 3:2, H17, DAS, Surrender, except the dealer said I could re-split aces. One note: I was playing two hands at $50 each and had a rough shoe so I dropped down to $25 on each hand. After a while the dealer pointed out that since it was a $15 min table I needed to bet at least $30 on each hand. A few of us were kicking this around on another thread – it was a good example on how they want you to double your bets on the lower limit tables, but they don’t care at the higher limits.

I stopped by the host on duty when we checked out. They cleared all my charges - the resort fee and bar tab from Bound. When I got home, I discovered they also refunded my room deposit. COMPED ROOM, baby! :woot:

    Bellagio:

I had a ROUGH Friday, getting killed at both BJ and Craps. The Craps dealers at B are very good. I played $50 and $100 min tables at the end of the BJ pit near the craps tables and cage. These have the best rules available: 3:2, S17, DAS, RSA, Surrender for the 6-deck shoe games. The 2–deck games were H17 and No Surrender (IIRC) and dealt from a shoe. I think I finished down $4,500 for the day. Saturday was better as I clawed back about half of my losses for the day.

We poked around on the bar tops ($1) for some pre-dinner drinks on both Friday and Saturday. I lost a combined $500 for my two “free” drinks. It sucked – playing the bartops was my worst mistake gambling this trip. Sorry, Tring, I didn't take pictures of the pay tables. :poke:

While I like gambling at Bellagio, the casino is a complete zoo. God I miss staying at Aria! The host on Sunday said they had me for ~11 hours at ~$150 avg and couldn’t give me any back-end comps. He said my losses were -$1,500 but actual losses by my count were much higher than that. C'est la vie!

    Food & Entertainment

We had a great food trip!

    Thursday:

$1 happy hour at Cromwell was a bust. There was only one overwhelmed server. I had to stand in line for 20 minutes to get our first round. We left after that.

    IMG_3473.JPG

For dinner we wanted to try something new and off the beaten path. We decided on Fat Choy, so we Lyfted over to the Eureka Casino. My friend was expecting something else completely. We split orders of the Duck Bao (very good) and Pork Belly Bao (EXCELLENT). I had the short rib grilled cheese (very decent) and he had the burger. Sorry, forgot to take pictures!

We had some KILLER cocktails to finish the night while people watching at Bound Bar at the Cromwell. My friend had the Bound Old Fashioned and I had the Aged Rum Daiquiri. The Ron Zacapa made it sweet and a bit “nutty”.

    Friday:

The host on duty at the Cromwell said I had about $8 in RCs to spend and she encouraged me to spend them, otherwise she would apply them to my room. Barbary Dogs, ahoy!

    IMG_3474.jpg

$5 for three mini chili cheese dogs and a fountain drink. Very good value!

We ended up getting a real lunch over at Noodles at Bellagio. I had dim sum and he had some soup. It hit the spot – not too heavy and very tasty.

Sticking with our off-strip theme, we tried The Barrymore for dinner. This is a steakhouse in the Royal Vacation Suites on Convention Center Drive just north of Encore. The food was very good – I had an 8 oz filet ($43?) and we split lobster mac & cheese and spinach for the sides. Service SUCKED. There was only one server for the entire room. We were hoping to see and hear the live lounge singer but the lounge was completely separated from the dining room. BOOO. I don’t believe I will be going back.

    IMG_3478.JPG

    IMG_3479.jpg

We hit up Frankie’s Tiki Room for after dinner drinks. I picked up a souvenir mug and a signed book.

    IMG_3482.jpg

We hit up Vesper and at Cosmo for drinks and people watching. Great as usual. An enterprising entrepreneur hit up my friend with offers for entertainment at $800/hour. I told him that if he wasn’t wearing a suit it may have been $600!

I finished off the night like any good boy should:

    IMG_3483.jpg

    Saturday:

My “guilty pleasure” on vacation is McDonald’s breakfast… two Sausage McMuffins w/o egg FTW! We had lunch again at Noodles. I had the Malaysian fried rice with chicken and BBQ pork, very tasty.

Afternoon drinks at the Baccarat Bar were great.

We hit MICHAEL MINA for an early pre-show dinner. Service and food were both EXCELLENT. My friend got the artichoke soup and the broiled Saba Mackerel with fermented black bean vinaigrette, bok choy and mushrooms and the ginger scallion fried rice. I stuck with the pre-theater menu and upgraded to the tuna tartare and Lobster Pot Pie. WORTH EVERY PENNY. I didn’t realize they just re-opened after a minor renovation. My foodie friend thought it was one of the top-5 meals he has ever had!

    Entertainment:

In addition to food and booze, the bulk of our Vegas entertainment is definitely people-watching. This is the best city in the world for people watching!

We also had tickets to Opium at the Cosmopolitan. I really liked the show. The humor was pretty juvenile, and there was unexpected nudity. We avoided becoming part of the show despite being in the front row.

There were three middle-aged couples across from us and they looked horrified and uncomfortable. They left about a third of the way through after the sword swallower tossed a dildo in their direction. The audience booed them on the way out! Drinks were served in bags – I had the "Gorgon's Revenge".

Overall, it wasn’t Absinthe but it was worth my time. I would definitely see it again.

    Grab Bag & Recap

We walked through Park MGM. It is obviously still under major construction, but the finished parts are not floating my boat. I would NOT even consider staying there until everything was done, and may not stay there ever. Menu prices at Bavette’s looked extortionate.

The weather was fantastic albeit very windy on Friday. I was worried that the flight in on Thursday was going to be rough but it wasn't bad.

Food was great through the entire trip and our rooms were good.

Gambling was good and fun - but the results sucked!

Overall it was a good trip! I needed a good weekend away to spend some of my entertainment dollars.

I will be back in Vegas in three weeks to take my mother and my two aunts on an “old ladies trip”. I will be forced to chaperone! Do you cats want a live trip report, or what?!?

I'm one who loves the food and drink pics from different places in Vegas so enjoyed your report very much.
Loved that you got a chance to go to Frankie's Tiki Room too. Good stuff!
Sorry you didn't do so well on the gambling front but you'll get 'em next time.
Sounds like a live trip report with your mom and 2 aunts would be one for the books. Do it!!!
Thanks for sharing with us, @spicole.

Nice report. My April trip to Bellagio was also enjoyable but very unlucky. I’m hoping to try Aria in the fall, never stayed there before.

Ever been to Lei Low in Houston? My niece and her husband own that tiki bar.

Nice TR @spicole. That meal at Michael Mina looks like it was incredible. That Frankie's Tiki Room menu made me look at my countdown timer.....can't wait to get there in July. Thanks for all the pics.

Well written trip report. Have had trips like that with the gambling gods not giving me much to work with. Comps at Bellagio could have been better I think their math was wrong.

Great report man! I have not heard too many good things about the happy hour at Cromwell. Basically all the same as you and I'm way to impatient for that. Thanks for sharing.

Those hardwood floors in the Cromwell room set it off. Maybe I'll catch a glitch in the system one of these days and get a comped room there :)

That's cool! I can practically walk to Lei Low from my house. Love that place!

I like Aria so much better than Bellagio. I like to think of it as "new school" versus "old school".

The concept is great, they had a live band, and the bar was busy but not too packed. They just needed more staff.

Ugh, when it goes like that, better to drink fast and play slow! And I appreciate the thought on the paytables. Fortunately, I don't think Bellagio has changed the dollar paytables in years. Think it's still 9/5 DDB, unlike those fuckers at Aria. :evillaugh: May swing by them during a compulsory Conservatory visit next month.

    Great report, despite the outcome!
