SW will begin flights to HI this year and the latest they should announce will be October or sooner. After announcing they should start within weeks. They will not have planes based there as of now. The cities are HNL and OGG as most have expected. There baggage fee(s) will not change. The flights will be from CA. Opinions are welcome

Hawaii is my LEAST favorite destination. "3000 miles somewhere in the middle of nowhere"

I would only fly there as a stopover to Asia. And yes, I've been there a number of times.

You said "opinions are welcome". Be careful what you ask for . . . . :goofy:

Least favorite? Have you been to Detroit in the winter? No offense to my Michigan brethren.

At least there's casinos in Detroit.

P.S. I was stationed at Great Lakes Naval base near Chicago for 3 years in the early 80's.

I have been in Detroit in winter (I was born there) and lived there until I was 14. I have also been spent a couple of winters in Grand Forks, ND, now that's winter!

My Opinion? I have said all along, will not happen this year. They have always said that they will begin SELLING tickets this year, but I do not see them starting service this year.

You will hear about it if SWA starts service to Hawaii. As Tatt mentioned, they hope to start selling tickets this year for service to probably start sometime next year.

But we are getting a little ahead of things. SW still hasn't gotten approval from the feds to fly over the pacific yet. They are currently in the process of getting slots (gates) at HNL and OGG airports. This is the middle of August and we haven't even heard if they are hiring personnel in Hawaii yet.

SW execs also said that there will be SW employees manning the HNL airport ground crew but on Maui (OGG) they will be outsourcing most of the work.

LOVE Hawaii but we won't be winging over if/when SWA shows up. We avoid Oahu and Alaska gets us to the others ... and it's Alaska. But anything that brings competition is good by me.

    Ken,
I take it Oahu is an overcrowded tourist trap for you. What parts of Hawaii would you recommend?
Thinking of doing it for the first time this winter.

Also not Ken, haha. Everyone has different opinions and like and dislikes. Myself, I would not go to Maui again if someone paid for it. I absolutely hated my time there. I felt like I was at a Disney style theme park with Hawaii as a theme. My favorite in order are Oahu, BI, Kauai, then Maui.

I like Oahu because I am a city person. I can stay in the city, be out in the country at a beautiful secluded beach in about an hour or less, then be back in the city for happy hour and bar hopping. I like the BI because it is so big and both the people and scenery varies so much. I like Kauai because I thought it was the most beautiful place I have ever been, and the people were friendly. Lol, I cannot think of a single good thing to say about Maui, except maybe the sun was shining. I always find it funny that a lot of people who go to Maui every year have never been to one of the other Islands.

People need to visit Oahu for Pearl and environs. Then be done with it. I don't get any allure out of Honolulu or Waikiki. The interface is stunning, geographically, but I don't need high rises and Outback Steakhouses backing my beach experiences. Others disagree. I like the north and east shores but, again, can replicate that on other islands with less of the other stuff. And for me, golf ... it's the least alluring golf island.

We like Maui but it's not our fave. Kihei and particularly Kaanapali are too touristy. Lahaina is fun but we'd never stay near there. LOVE the upcountry. It's eye candy getting to Hana but once you've been there a few times you've kinda tagged that base (and I say that knowing we love Travaasa Hana as a retreat.)

We rotate between Hawaii Island and Kauai, with Kauai being our A-1 go to spot. Great beaches and snorkeling and outdoor activities, way fewer tourists, a manageable size where you can get the various-sides-of-the-islands flora and weather but in a do-able package. The vibes is just chill-er. And golf at all price points.

They are running out of time to even "Begin selling tickets in 2018" as they have been advertising since Oct 2017. Only 2 schedule extensions max left this year, although they could always make a special schedule addition at any time, rare for them to do it.

We love SWA but they would have to have First Class Seats to get me to fly 11+ hours (again) to Honolulu.

They're only going to fly from a couple west coast cities. So no 11 hour flights

Last I heard was that they got approval for some gates on Maui and Big Island, not sure about Honolulu yet. They still need approval from the feds to fly over the ocean to Hawaii. When that happens they can start to book flights. As UK mentioned, they will probably only fly from west coast and LV (naturally LV since that is a popular destination).

One worry, they were going to use the max 737's but heard there are problems with that plane so not sure what the status is on that plane.

SW did mention that they were hoping that they could start bookings before the end of the year for 2019 flights but I haven't heard anything in the past month or so.

Hot off the press, this was just reported tonight on our local news channel:

HONOLULU (KHON2) - Ready to go! Southwest Airlines says all it's waiting for is the green light from the FAA. Southwest will definitely bring some competition to the market.

They are still hoping to start selling tickets for 2019 by the end of the year.

The only issues deal with interisland travel for SW.

Nope, no LAS. Only California cities. Sacramento, Oakland, San Diego and San Jose. Later adding LAX.

wow, no LAS? I'm surprised as a good amount of people would fly to LAS over the other cities.

Hmmmm, Sacramento. Might have to check that out. But it will really take something to get us off Alaska when going to the islands.
