We are waiting until tomorrow to book our flight home from Vegas in November. Southwest Chase credit card tomorrow is giving 50X’s points for their 50th birthday up to $100.

That is what I have been doing lately. I assume they will stop the ability to change flights at no cost eventually.

As a tip, Thursdays seem to be the day for the free changes. The dates that fall within the changes seems to be different, but I check frequently when I book a cheap flight and Thursdays work the most. In fact awhile ago I purchased the cheapest flights I could find in September and today when I checked I was able to move them for free to the dates we wanted in early October.

I have 3 one way flights and when booked, one for me and one for my brother, was able to immediately rebook it for no charge right after I booked it...the other two I had to wait a few days, I checked everyday...going back and checking it would offer it for one flight but not the others, few days pass and it was offering for the one it wouldnt earlier but not for the others...their system is weird lol

in the end im going to book the cheap one and see what happens, worst case ill have to spend a few more dollars

Question, if I book something that is offset by my $75 free travel with the credit card does will that still count? And, if I cancel it later do they take the points away?

The promo today is matching dollar for dollar. So if you spend $75 in travel credit, that will not count towaard the promotion, but any amount you charge beyond that (up to the $100 limit) should qualify.

From my experience, if you cancel the flight later and receive a refund, the points will be deducted. If you use it as a travel credit or otherwise do not receive a refund, you will still keep the points

The $75 would actually charge to the credit card and then they offset it on the statement with the travel credit. I wouldn't be actually using a travel credit to make the purchase. ???

added, the $75 is a promotional thing with the credit card, not credit from SW for a cancellation.

I bought 3 $100 gift cards today. (actually $100,, $102 and $103 to not mix them up).

I will use them in the future at some time and pocket the 15,000 miles.

Wife has one card, I have two.

I booked a cheap one way flight in Dec for $109.

(With the expectation that there will be a schedule change between now and then and I’ll be able to switch to a much better flight for my NYE trip for no additional cost).

Ok, maybe I'm overthinking this, but if I charge a $75 flight to somewhere, anywhere, today I'll receive 3750 in rapid reward points. When the charge hits my Chase SW priority statement they will give me a statement credit of $75, so I owe nothing. Then I cancel the flight and receive a travel credit from SW, but get to keep the points because the charge is not actually reversed. End result, instead of a Chase travel credit I have a SW travel credit, plus 3750 pts. The chase credit can only be used for a SW flight and would expire next April if I don't use it. Does this sound reasonable or am I missing something?

Makes sense, note if you cancel within 24hrs you can get a full refund. I think SW defaults to a credit, make sure you select the option you want. If you receive a refund I'm sure they'd pull the points.

Why not just buy a $100 gift card? That's what I did. Then I used that to book flights. If you cancel, the flight credit will go back to your gift card balance. And you won't lose the extra points from the promo. The gift cards never expire. This is assuming you will use $100 worth of flights in the future.

The $75 credit from Chase doesn't apply to purchase of gift cards, only actual SW travel. I called and asked. I have lots of points and never really use real money to purchase flights so buying a gift card would be an unnecessary expense. I'm just looking to use the credit and get me some free points! :D The closest flight I found to $75 is $79 from Vegas to Reno. That would be 3950 in points, which would be worth about $63 if using cash to book a flight. I just have to convince myself that it will work the way I think it should.

That's correct, with one addition. The cheapest SWA fares (the wanna et away fares) defauts to a credit. But the more expensive fare is eligible for a full refund if you cancel your flight. Also, there are government regulations about receiving a full refund if you cancel your flight within, I believe, 48 hours of booking
