This is a big cheapo question, but it could be a money saver...if it's doable.

Our companion pass ends 12/2017. If I book a companion pass when we still have the perk, but we book for a date PAST our expiration date...will it default to two fares once our companion pass ends?

I was considering trying to book our spring 2018 trip while we we still have the companion pass membership, but I wasn't sure if anyone has had success with this.

I know, I know, cheapo on loopholes, but it's worth asking!

This makes it sound like booking date is what matters, not flight date (which is different than how they treat expiration of travel funds). There isn't any mention of "travel must be completed by" in the terms for Companion Pass.

    https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/faqs.html?topic=rapid_rewards_program_terms_and_conditions
(about 2/3rds of the way down)

The Companion Pass allows the Member to designate an individual to fly with the Member (such designated individual, the “Companion”) on Southwest Airlines flights purchased by the Member and booked through Southwest Airlines during the Companion Pass validity period. A Companion's reservation is not considered a purchased flight, and therefore, another Companion Pass reservation cannot be booked from it.

I would think if the online system lets you book it, you're good. It won't let you use travel funds if you try to book a flight date that's after the expiration date.

Here is what I would do to find out.. maybe.

Go in and attempt to book the trip. Book a fully refundable if you want and see if you can add the companion.

You might also want to check the SW section at flyertalk.com

I doubt it. Otherwise, you could book several trips beyond the reward date, which I have to think would be a no-no.

However, @nostresshere's answer is correct. If you can book it, fine, and also check the SW section at flyertaks.com

Thanks so much guys, you always have great insight. We actually have to call in and add the companion fare...but its, worth trying, the worst they'll say us no.

They don't let you book years out, so it might be viable.

I won't book till the end of the year (PAC 12 dates) but I'll update the results once I try.

Thank you guys again for taking the time to give great feedback, I really appreciate it! :)

What do you mean you have to call to add the companion fare?

Booked a dozen or more trips with the companion fare. Always did it online. If I remember correctly, I book my flight, then a few minutes later I add the companion.

I am 99% confident that your companion booking would get cancelled automatically after your CP expires and you will have to rebook your companion at whatever the current fare is. I know with certainty that A-list benefits show up on future bookings until the expiration date hits and then it goes away, I have no reason to think CP would not work the same way.

My guess is they will however let you book CP fares after the expiration date because you can theoretically requalify.

Hmmm, I'll try that. If I can avoid talking to someone, it'll probably help my odds, thanks NoStress! :)

And if they cancel it post lapse, that's ok. If I try and they cancel it, I'm just back to square one...so I don't really have anything to lose trying!

Maybe. Maybe not. If the flight date is not too far in the future, you may be stuck with a higher fare. If more than a few months out from when they might "cancel" it, then you should be fine. Worth a shot. Never know what the airline IT systems might do. LOL!

It does seem too good to be true that they would let you have a free companion flight with a travel date after your status expires.

I think that if they let you book it is okay. But you should call customer service and ask them.
