    My Trip Report

This is going to be a bit different than my normal trip report since I stayed off strip at the South Point instead of the strip, but will probably be long anyway.

About 9 days before my wife Ann and I were to leave Southwest Missouri for the South Point, I got the crud (sinus infection and everything that goes with it). Got on the drug bandwagon real quick and managed to get into traveling condition. Unfortunately, I managed to give the crud to Ann 3 days before the trip and the same drugs that cured me, didn't work on her. Saturday morning, Ann gets up and declares she's not going on the trip. I gambled when I bought the Allegiant tickets and bought the trip flex option, so a quick phone call to Allegiant and two tickets turned into one, and a future trip. Another quick call to Ann's sister in Arizona to tell her the bad news, turned into a free pickup at the airport since one more person with only one bag could fit in the car. That saved some taxi fare.

Sunday morning rolls around and I leave for the airport (40 miles away) at 10 for a noon flight. Get to SGF at 10:55, park and stroll into the airport to find a line of about 12 people in front of me. Get the boarding pass at 11:25 and go to the security line. One look tells me I better not have smoke till Vegas and get in line thinking "wtf" since SGF never has a security line. Luckily, there are still plenty of people behind me in line on the same flight.

Get through security without the standard playstation and laptop problems in front of me, get to the gate and walk right on the plane, wondering who is going to be in Ann's seat. We always get the 2 seats on the left of the plane, and the person was 3 Ann's instead of 1. Oh well, it's only 3 hours or so.

Plane is 10 minutes early into LV and I call the BIL and SIL who are about 15 minutes away from the airport. Sitting in row 10, I get to baggage claim 15 minutes before the bags do, and wait, for my bag to come off last. Stroll out to figure out where the pickup area is, find it, and the gate is closed to let traffic through. SIL (DD) calls and says they have to go around as the non cop told them to move, even though I was standing right across the street.

Get picked up and we head to the SP. None of us had stayed there before, but our last trip in August, we went down there to check it out, as Ann and I already had reservations there, and after the flamingo fiasco, I wanted to see the place before staying there. Since DD had won at the SP (using my card), they decided to come with us. Note, DD winning on my card turns out to bite me in the ass at check out time.

Park in Valet and call the bellman. No waiting even though the place was busy. Went in around 1:30 to check in, DD's room is ready, mine is not, but only 2 doors down, so we head up to get the stuff (coolers) and drink a few while waiting for my room to be ready. We ended up on the 18th floor, I had room 1823 and DD had room 1827, both had views of LV BLVD and if you looked just right, you could see the airport to the North. No Strip view, but who cares. The rooms had king beds, a couch, 2 tables and a nice bathroom, though no separate shower.

Call for the bags, the bellman is there quick. I'm not used to this on the strip and like it. Housekeeping is cleaning the room I get and we check the hallway for progress. When she is finished, I go down to get my key, no line at check-in again, and go up to get my stuff. Unpack and head down.

DD heads for the $1 WOF machines, while Vern goes to the pennies, and I go to the 5 line reels I love. Started off at 50 cent denomination and quickly hit for $125 and go to find Vern. We wander around for a bit, playing the pennies and getting plowed. Must say the cocktail service was frequent, friendly, and agreeable. The cocktail service was as good as any place I've been in a long time, so I was happy. I prefer to lose with a drink in my hand.

Sometime early on, I'm sitting at the end of an aisle, Vern is two down, and a floor manager comes to the end, get's in a cabinet and get's out a pack of smokes. She comes back later and I ask what's the deal with the smokes, you guys comp them? She says yes with 1500 points in a day on your card (1 point = $1 coin in). So I grab myself a free (?) pack of Marlboros, which were $8 at the gift shop. Don't know what the machines are called, but for the bonus round, the upper screen rotates to various other screens. At one point, I hear Vern say how about that, $300 bonus on a 35 cent bet. This will become a line I hear a lot in the next few days.

Around 9 PM, we start discussing food and decide to go to the Del Mar Deli. Vern and I opt for fish and chips (around $10) and DD gets a half of a pastrami sammy. We take the food up to the room, hit the cooler for another round of Coronas and eat. The fish was small and a bit over done, but the pastrami was huge and great. DD was nice and told me to finish it. Around 10 I wander down to my room and crash, leaving strict orders not to call me before 8AM. Lost about $200.

Coming up: Day 2 - Drunk before 1PM :drunk: and off to the M

Actually, she insisted that I go. She is a great wife.

one thing on the cigs, if you ask a CW, be sure to tell them you want the free ones. They will go get a manager for you.

Looking forward to the rest. We too are planning on staying at SP next trip. Did you reserve mid level or high level floor room?

Day 2 - wake up around 7, get to work at 9...wait, I am not living a rush song here...try this again

wake up around 7 and watch the today show for a bit on the 42" non HD flat screen on the wall. The tv may be HD, but the content is not. What's up with that? Take a shower and note that the pressure will blow various parts off your body if not carefull:thumbsup: Hate a hotel where you can't get wet in the shower. Have a couple of cups of java, and call Vern to find out where he's at, turns out he's been downstairs since 5am, so I head down to find him, knowing full well that DD will not be ready before 2.

I'll be quite honest, I have no idea what we played, slots I'm sure, but the beer was cold and frequent and we were having a good time. Suffice it to say, the beers were nicer to us than the slots.

At check in, the SP gave me 2 fun books, it mostly had free desert and % off coupons for food, but did contain 1 free lunch buffet each, so around 11:30 I took a walk to check out the line. It was long. Back to drinking I went. I do remember playing the penquins, that were not dancing for me.

Around 1:30, I went to the buffet and used one of the free coupons. I was impressed. I like my food very heavy on the seasoning, and several of the entrees were seasoned to my liking. The blackened bay scallops in cajun sauce and the baked chicken cayanne (or something like that) were very good and spicy. The buffet has a mexican station, an italian station, a seafood station, an oriental station, and a BBQ station (American and bbq), along with a desert and salad bar. The one thing I was surprised at was that there was no fried chicken. Roast turkey, sausage, and beef, but no fried chicken. I think the normal price is 9.99 and it would have been worth that, even better free.

I managed to eat myself sober  and went upstairs to find my room clean with the AC left where I had it set (65 degrees) and running, grabbed my sunglasses and DD and we went down to find Vern. Went outside and grabbed a cab to the M Resort for our first visit.

I was a bit worried about the cab situation at the south point, being so far out, but there were plenty of cabs and away we went. Right past the SP, the strip turns to two lanes for about the 3 miles to the M, the only thing on the way was a purina farms feed store "for all your livestock needs"

We were all impressed with the M upon arrival, it is a beautiful place. None of of thought the place was a casino when we walked in, since the main door does not go into the casino. We go to get our Magine cards, luckily the line was not long. For new sign ups, there were offering $5 in free play or a free tee shirt. I decided on the free tank and told the guy large. He looked at me like I was crazy and I told him it was for my wife. He looked at me like I was crazy again, so I explained that she like to wear loose fitting shirts as dresses. DD comes up and had taken the free play and told me to get the ladies shirt for her instead of the mens tank. Well, he didn't offer me that, so I sent him back for the pink tank. To bad it didn't say "my husband went to Vegas and brought me back this shirt" but free is free.

We all head off in our separate ways, which turns out to be in the same direction this time. Vern starts playing some Lucy stacked game, DD disappears and I go find a super red hot penny ala griffens gate, but it's the one with the tigers and lions instead. It eats up $100 very quick, so I go find the penguin game. Put my money in, and "call attendent" appears. Oh, Lucky me. I hit the change button, the guy comes after 10 minutes, opens the door ,shuts the door, and I hit the max bet button. It spins. He disappears, and I hit the button again. Call Attendent. So obviously, that's a sign I'm not to play the penquins. Sit for another 15 minutes, no drink, no attendent. He shows up again, does the same thing, says hit the button, so I hit cash out. He wasn't expecting that, but I got my voucher and told him to have fun. He kept working on it and finally put the out of service card on it.

Went to find the fishing machine (3 reel) that you have to get the bonus, then in the bonus get the 3 lures to get a chance to catch a fish. Catch 2 fish and wander away. Spy an airplane machine. Hadn't seen that before, and it was fun. The wild symbol (blow up pilot) was a riot.

About this time, my sinus infection decided to make an unscheduled appearance. Apparently, the M pumps a "stink" into the air, and it was making me cough. My nose started going nuts and I went to find Vern to see how it was going for him. He was still on the lucy machine, so I joined him and finally scored my first drink. It was good too.

I asked him about the smell, he could smell it but wasn't being bothered by it, so I chalked that up to being healthy. DD shows back up and they take pity on me, and we cab back up to the south point. The cab was a Scion, and Vern, being a Scion owner started talking about Scions, the trip went quick. Did ask the cabby if cabs would be around at 4AM at the SP and he said the would be lined up. Surprised me.

We go back inside and everybody drops there stuff in my hands, so I take it up to the room. Head back down and proceed to play some 5 line reels for awhile and watch some MNF. About 8, I mentioned dinner, Vern wasn't interested and DD was "making love to the machine" so I played some more. Next thing I know, Vern is upstairs and DD is calling me telling me my drink is here. Now I'm all the way at the other end of the casino, and she is ordering drinks for me. So I go get the drink, shun the WOF machine she is playing (never can win) and wander away. Around 10, I decide I'm going to go up and get some room service, or pass out, whichever comes first. Get on the elevator and DD calls. "will you come get me and take me to my room?" Now, I'm already in front of my room, so I tell her I'll come back down and get her and put her to bed with Vern. She says she has found the elevator, I remind her of her room number and floor and call room service.

Hey, how far behind are you?

We are not backed up at all, sir.

Ok, send me up some chicken wings as hot as you can make them and two pitchers of ice water.

    Ok, that'll be an hour.

Jeez, should have passed out. So I'm keeping my buzz going waiting for the 6 wings to get here. Worth the wait, 9 bucks + tip and huge. Not very hot, but still hot compared to the way most people eat them. Scarf the wings down and climb into my 2 black lab and wife free bed.

    Day 3 coming up.

Day 3 - Woke up at 6, no hangover and ready to go. Believe this was the day Paris got the sweet deal of probation for drug possession and the local news was abuzz about her court appearance.

Drank a couple of cups of coffee, showered and wandered downstairs, knowing that Vern would be down there. First words out of his mouth were "$185 on a 30 cent bet".

I eased into the morning with a Corona, he was having Jack and cokes, he didn't want to get full so we could have another free buffet at lunch. We spent the morning boozing and losing, and waited for DD to make her appearance around 1 to go eat. DD shows up at 1, says she's not hungry (translates to I wanna play for an hour) so I head over to the $ top $ and king of cash machines. Hit a few bonuses and win about $50. Vern is playing one of the old Alien machines and having good luck. 2PM rolls around and DD still isn't hungry, so Vern and I hit the buffet alone. He was as impressed as I was. This time, I made the mistake of eating a few pickled jalepenos, normally not a problem, but for some reason, they interacted with my stomach in a not so good way a few hours later.

We roll out of the buffet and I decide I need to go get some Tums, so I head up. We had discussed going Downtown, to the strip, or to the Silverton and decide that the risk of a trip to the clark county jail for a dwi made the downtown trip out of the question, and we've been to the strip to many times, so before lunch we decided to go to the Silverton.

After I get back from my Tums run, DD decided she wanted to stay at the SP, so we play there. My stomach starts getting worse, so I go back up to the room for more tums, a pepcid, and finally go down to the gift shop for the big guns, aka alka seltzer.

Well, the plop plop fizz fizz did the trick, and I'm down in the casino again by 6. Find DD over at the WOF where she had just hit the wheel for 1K. Vern talks her into giving him $700, I about fell over, and know I stepped on my jaw when she did. That man is good at saving the gambo money for the next trip.

I go back to the 5 line reels and hit nada, so wander over to the craps table and buy in for $200. The CW came by every 5 minutes for her tip and I played for about an hour. The table was very choppy till this couple came up and the lady gets the dice. She made 6 points. I was playing the on and off come bet game for quite awhile when the dreaded 7 shows up. It was a good roll

Step back from the table and see that Vern had called my phone. I call him back and tell him I'm not at the room, I'm at the craps table, I can't talk, so he should just come over. Hang up and DD calls. Tell her the same thing.

So Vern and DD show up, Vern wants a drink and I tell them to just hang here, the CW will be by every 30 seconds. Maybe not that quick, but they get their drinks. The dice come around and I put $5 on the line in front of DD and tell her to grab two, hold them like you love them and hit the back wall. she doesn't hit the back wall, but she does make 3 points.

The SP only allows double odds, so I was betting $10 odds behind the $5 pass line bet for quite awhile, then the dealer tells me I can go up to 15 on the 6 and 8. Not sure how they figured that was double odds, but it worked well for me.

DD and Vern say they are going to the deli to grab some take out, then DD pulls me aside and tells me next time she's giving the money to me to hold, since Vern wouldn't give her any of the $700.

I stay at the craps table for a few more rolls, and decide I've had enough, so I go over to the deli looking to score the other half of DD's sandwich. Meet up with them, and we go upstairs. For some reason, their keys didn't work, so we went into my room to call. Vern had to wait in the hall as I had the AC at 65 and being from Arizona, he was freezing.

We grab the pint of canadian mist out of my cooler and go to their room once they get the keys working again. Have a couple of drinks, eat the other half of DD's sammy and go back to the room to watch some TV.

Managed to catch the "rant" on the local Fox news before falling asleep, so it was a good day. Really wish our local fox had the rant, where people get to call in and bitch about anything, but it would never go over here.

coming up - Day 4, last full day for me, DD/Vern go home.

    Day 4 - Wednesday

Wake up about 7 and do the coffee, shower, call wife thing till about 9, then call down to Vern to see where he's at. Turns out he's still in bed, even though check out time is noon and they are leaving today. They call back in about 15 minutes and I go down to their room to have the first beer of the morning. Sit around there for 10 minutes or so, decide I'd rather be down in the casino than watch them pack, so I head down.

Stop off at the gift shop/liquor store (corona 6 packs less than $6 there) and pick up Ann a sweat shirt, ashtray and fridge magnet. Go back up to the room, toss them in, and go back down.

Start playing some 15 or 20 line penny reel machine, that makes a ton of noise for every little hit, playing max bet. I end up sitting there getting deaf and drunk until 11:45 when DD and Vern show up. DD tells me she called the slot host and got everything comped off her bill. She goes to check out while Vern goes to get the car out of Valet.

I wander out there with them to say my goodbyes and it's about 85 degrees with a stiff north wind blowing. It was COLD. They head out and I go inside to get a 75 cent hotdog near the sports book, grab a beer and start playing something. It didn't hit, so I wandered over to the penquins, they didn't dance. So I wandered back to the other side and started playing a lobster mania, max bet. I hit 7 bonuses in 20 minutes and cashed out up $250.

I then went and played sex and the city, it didn't hit, so I played the monopoly version with the roller coaster ride. I sat there for about an hour and won about $20. I then moved over to the "vampire" game, he wasn't biting very well and went upstairs for a few minutes.

One of my only complaints of the south point is that the casino slot chairs are very hard, so my ass needed a rest. Kicked back on the couch for a bit, then wandered back downstairs to play some of those 5 line reels. They didn't hit, but I did see a lady hit the top jackpot, to bad she was playing 50 cents instead of $1 denomination. She didn't seem to mind the $3000 win.

At this point, I decide to go find some dinner, walk upstairs and check out Primarily Prime Rib and decide shorts and a camp shirt might not be appropriate, look at the mexican joint and decide I don't want that, so I end up at the 24 hour coffee shop.

I ordered the Prime Rib Special for $12, it was 10oz prime rib, a dinner salad, baked potato, and rolls and was good.

I then went back to the reels and played a little bit longer, than decided to go up and pack for my early am departure the next morning. After tossing everything into the suitcase, I called down and asked to speak to a host. My rough estimate is that I had put around 25000 points on my card ($1 coin in = 1 point) over the 4 days I played.

Apparently, the hosts go home at 5 and I got a lady who was a slot manager. She put me on hold, came back on and said we can comp $40 total. I said, are you sure? She said yes, what do you want to do?

I told her to take the money off the hotel tab, then went downstairs to find a host. The host door is locked, so I went into the high limit room and talked to a slot manager there. Told him what had happened, told him about DD getting everything comped and he looked at my play.

He said you were just here in August and you won then (DD did using my card). I told him yes, but I didn't stay here or use the points. He asked where I usually stay and I told him Caesars Palace. He responded, we give you more play for your money here, to which I responded, maybe, but my wallet says I'm still down $2000, and $40 in comps doesn't cut it when I'm used to free nights at Caesars and some food taken off.

So he looks some more, and ends up comping 2 of the 4 nights. Granted, HET is known for throwing free rooms around, and I only payed $40 a night anyway, but I had to try to get more than $40 in comps. Will have to wait and see if they send me any mailers, I've heard that out of staters don't get much in the way of mail.

On the way back to the room, I saw a lady carrying a waffle iron, and back in August, the gift of the week when I was there was a waffle iron for 100 points in a day. They were out the day I was there, so I stopped off at the players club to get my waffle iron. They gave me a choice of that or a sandwich maker, I took the sandwich maker.

At this point, it's about 9PM and I have a 6:30 Allegiant flight the next morning. Thought about doing an all nighter, but after the comp fiasco, I decided I'm not investing anymore tonight, and watched some TV. Woke up at 3:45 (15 minutes before the alarm as usual), told myself your on central time now so your only getting up 30 minutes earlier than usual and took a shower, rolled my bag down to the front desk and checked out at 4:15. Went outside and grabbed a cab. Sure enough, they were lined up.

Got to the airport at 4:30. People who fly allegiant a lot will know that mornings in LV at the airport can have long lines, and I didn't want to deal with that. Sometimes, the line is at the skycap, sometimes it's inside, but I'll skycap every day I can. A few trips before, there was no line inside, but did notice the agents were giving people fits over the size of their carry on's that had made the trip to LV with no problem and charging them to check them. I've never seen that happen in a skycap line, $5 tip and it flies.

Get my boarding pass by 4:35 and stand outside to get my nicotine level up. Was entertained by a couple of drunk european guys with a video camera. They were oblivious to the attention they were getting from the airport police. It was a good show, pulling cold beers out of their backpacks.

Go through security around 5:30 and find the gate. The only thing I'm carrying is a sack with my nook and newspaper in it, so when the agent says anybody without a carry on can board now, I jumped. Find my seat and settle in for a 2 hour flight in the fetal position due to Ann's chair (and mine) being filled by a giant.

Flight left on time, got to Springfield 20 minutes early, and I was home by 12:30. A good, but as usual, losing trip.

In closing, I liked the Southpoint. It was clean, quiet, the food was cheap and the staff was friendly. I wasn't to pleased with the comp situation, I don't know if the slot host would have been better or not. I would return, knowing that I shouldn't expect much in the way of comps, only because the southpoint is a nice property.

For the first time staying way off strip, I found it to be relaxing, and I didn't miss the strip one bit.

Next trip, I'm considering either the M or Southpoint, depending on offers.

    Thanks for reading!

The M Resort has the best HVAC system of anyone. They add Mediterranean Fig oil which kills alot of the tobacco smoke smell.

Craps at 2x (even Full 2x, which is what you were playing) is a disgrace. Half the town is at 5x, some at 10x or 20x and The Canneries and Casino Royale are at 100x. You were playing at 2x. No wonder there are so many nick names for South Point.

Comps at South Point? I keep hearing conflicting stories but most of them reflect a certain lack of generosity. One thing though about the SP, the CWs ain't bad looking! The rooms are supposedly quite large as are the drink glasses, but overall the gambling is not really in a very generous atmosphere.

The M buffet? Since you like to drink, you might want to know that the M buffet is easy to get comped and the beer/wine is included. And absolutely the BEST CWs in town!

    Thanks Fools Gold.

I agree, 2x odds at craps is a joke. That's why I was surprised when the dealer said I could go up to $15 on a $5 line bet.

The rooms were large and clean.

Nice TR. I'll be there next week for a few. Really liked the property when we were there in May. Great Casino, good food @ good $, good rooms, good pool, and very relaxed setting. What's not to like. You nailed it on the CW situation. Very nice talent there.:evillaugh:thumbsup:

I wonder if its really such an ungenerous place or not.

Anyway, here is the net house edge on combined pass line and odds bet, so you can see that in letting you go from 2x to Full 2x, the SouthPoint sure didn't do all that much for you! They gave you 0.034 percent. Big deal.

    1X ....... 0.848%
    2X ....... 0.606%
    2xFull ... 0.572%
    3X ....... 0.471%
    3x4x5x . 0.374%
    5X ....... 0.326%
    10X ..... 0.184%
    20X ..... 0.099%
    100X .... 0.021%

"2xFull" means the player can take 2.5 times odds on a point of 6 or 8, and 2 times on all other points.
    "3x4x5x" means 3X on 4 and 10, 4X on 5 and 9, and 5X on 6 and 8.

Great report jpw - the comp situation surprises me as well. They have been drying up though almost everywhere. Thanks for posting!

    Thanks for the nice comments.

It still blows me away that there is no host on duty in the evening. I'm wondering if the outcome of my comps would have been different if I would have talked to the host at the same time my sister in law did, even though I still had another full day to play.

I always figured the 3x4x5x odds thing was to make it easier on the dealers to pay out, since all pays are the same if betting at that level.

Loved your trip report......a really fun read. I've never been to either SP or the M; I always intend to get there, just never seem to make it. Poor Ann missing the trip, you owe her one now! Hope the SP comes through with some comped rooms after making you beg your way out of the place.

:wave:Wow that is strange about no host on duty as there is usually always one around at most casinos.
Loved your report--Thanks--and if we are ever there at the same time maybe we can get together for a drink as we seem to have the same thoughts on things in Vegas
