I have a buddy in Vegas for CES coming up and he told me that he went to BLT Steak and they charged him 18% on his bill and it was listed as a solo diner charge. I've never heard of this before. Anyone else hear about this? I find it hard to believe they would charge such a thing but then again they find new ways to steal from us.

I've never heard of this and eat by myself a majority of the time. I will have to ask when I'm seated if there's a "solo diner" charge.

Asia closed, Canada closed, I'm left with Boston, AC, Philadelphia
    Scheduled, but cancellable

I eat by myself in vegas all the time (as well as other cities). Never heard of this charge. And if they tried to charge it to me without alerting me when I was seated, I would simply refuse to pay that 18%

One would assume it was printed somewhere so its not exactly stealing.

probably in some fine print somewhere. if informed up front, I would turn around and leave for sure. I understand that they may make more money from a table of 2 or 4 or more. it is short-sighted. you are for sure going to alienate this solo diner that may have returned in the future with a group, or a least put in a good word for you, but not now. I HATE GOUGING!!

I've heard of charging for "sharing" in certain places, but this is a new one for me!

Perhaps proof of multiple personalities would warrant an exemption from a solo diner charge? :faint::feedme:
    Food for thought, I guess!

I've heard of this for extremely popular restaurants, but BLT Steak doesn't strike me as being even close to the most popular steakhouse in Las Vegas. It had to be in fine print like the placards at buffet cashier booths, but that's just wrong.

    .
Three years ago, we were at MGM. Do not remember restaurant. It was Mexican. Anyhoo, I was hungry S.O. was not. He told waitress he would just eat some of mine. She brought him a plate to eat off. They charged us $7 for the plate. We should have taken it with us.

Wife and I were at the new steakhouse in Orleans (which was excellent). We wanted to share a steak. The waiter told us it would cost $7 extra if the chef split it in the kitchen but no charge if we got a clean plate and split it ourselves. We told the waiter that for $7, we would cut the steak in half ourselves. The waiter brought it out already split and plated beautifully and said no extra charge!

Yes, of course, assault someone who has had nothing to do with establishing company policy.

Shared plate charges are hardly a recent (or Las Vegas) invention.

Though, I'm definitely curious about this supposed "solo diner charge". (I won't hop on the "there oughta be a law" frenzy that inevitably occurs on his board when anyone dares raise a price/fee...but I would be annoyed enough to avoid restaurants with such a charge.)

These new charges have to be costing service industry workers their gratuities. Unfortunately this is considered a part of their wage!

Nope. We ordered 3 side dishes plus the split steak plus a bottle of wine (and dessert). We sort of expected them to waive the fee since we weren't just sharing a steak and drinking water.

Or just the opposite. If you're a waiter and get 10 tables for your shift, you'd rather have 4 people at your table instead of 2 people sharing 1 dish or 1 person with 1 dish. If these fees discourage the thrifty and open up tables for the spendthrifts then the waiters are happier to make more money. If the tables are empty...well then they get 20% of zero.
