I could be wrong on this, but I thought they refunded the difference if the new flight they assigned was cheaper than the original one.

Ya, I'm not sure how it works when you can "change for free" It didn't show any price change up or down. So I'm not sure. But the schedule now shows 2 nonstop and it won't let me choose either one, even to buy it from scratch. Blah. I really want the nonstop!

UPDATE: Persistence!! I kept trying and finally got it to go through. I now have the nonstop I wanted (even though it's a bit earlier than my preferred) and it was $50 cheaper than my other flight which was not a nonstop! Yay!

They tried pulling this exact same {drek} with me!

I got an email saying that my return flight was "changed" and they changed me from a direct nonstop flight to a flight that took off at more or less the same time but connected, with a plane change, in Phoenix and arrived in OMA a couple hours later! I was able to quickly go on the web site and change it to a direct flight that takes off about 1/2 hour before the original.

My guess is that their reassignment is automated and that it will always do something like select the next (as in later) listed flight from A to B and will be blind to any earlier (if even by a few minutes) flights of a more convenient type.

Hint to others. Whenver doing something like this - DO NOT CANCEL the original flight until you have the new one booked. $hit happens.

SW changed our flight to LAS from a one stop with plane change, 6 hrs 25 minutes to a two stop no plane change, 10 hour flight! I changed it to another one stop with plane change, 7 hours 15 minutes but getting in four hours earlier so I was happy enough with that. I didn’t check the price for the 10 hour flight because well … that wasn’t happening. When I looked at the new flight I had chosen I saw that it was cheaper than what we had paid originally so I went back in and “changed” it again (selected the flight we already had) and ended up getting back 8,000 points. I’m pretty sure SW would not have proactively refunded the points. I’m not sure what even made me look because I never would have thought that the price would be less now than it was when I booked it in April. Never hurts to check I guess.

I was fortunate, both September flights were changed but still nonstop and only a half hour time difference.

SW just changed our Sept. flights. Both our nonstops to/from PHL now have a connection both ways.
They dropped n stops so only one super early nonstop option on the return day.

Considering canceling and booking American who has more nonstop options.

I have been avoiding SWA because they do not have the nonstop flights I want. From what I am reading here, whats the point of airlines having a reservation system if they are not going to stick with what they are offering. Good thing grocery stores are not like that. You picked corn flakes sir, sorry now you have sugar pops, enjoy your breakfast.

This is what I was wondering. If you are doing the "free change due to modifications" will they refund if you chose a cheaper flight. It doesn't look like it, since they don't show prices + or -. So that's why I canceled and rebooked. But curious what others have found.

My Sept flight from Long Island was changed. Outgoing flight I made out better. Get in a little earlier. Return flight on Saturday am is 6 am. They just have 2 flights back to LI on Saturday and both a 6 am.

It has been a little infuriating, to say the least. It's at the point now where I get concerned every time I see an email from Southwest in my inbox. "Great, what are they changing now?"

I recently called and lived with being on hold for around 30 minutes. Upon answering, the customer service rep said that if you make the change online, the Early Bird designation sometimes doesn't carry over, so they handle it manually. Not sure what that says about SWA's technology, but that is what they told me.

    *CAUTIONARY TALE*

If you have a connecting flight that is being moved, be sure to look at both segments.

I had a flight from MDW to FAT connecting through DEN for September adjusted the other day. When looking at the new flight # it did not come up on Southwests schedule when searching flights from MDW to FAT. Turns out I was only booked to DEN. NO connecting flight on to FAT was added. It was easily fixed by calling CS, but that would have been a rude surprise if I had not.

Also when calling CS instead of waiting on the line, use their Call Back feature. Worked great for me.

It sounds like September is the month they are readjusting as I also received a "change" email this week.
My MDW to LAS was only a flight number and aircraft change, the times remained the same but my LAS to MDW was changed from 3:30 departure to 3:10.
So THANK YOU Southwest I was able to change the departure part to a 5:10 departure at no cost, more time in Vegas and I like the later in the afternoon flights anyway but when I booked
it was more expensive than the 3:10 flight.
Also it is SO easy to change flights on their app!

Yeppers!! Late morning early afternoon arrival.
No complaints but THEN we get a return email about 36 hours later. Moved up times ….no bueno…..Book 10: am flight to get in to Austin JUST as traffic pics up. :p Makes me feel like Andy granatelli look it up kids.
    Sold stuff…..see STP……
