On the Sigma Derby Facebook page, a thread was just posted that Sigma Derby has been pulled from the floor at MGM.

    From the initial post:

" All Sigma Derby players. A friend of mine, who knows that SD is my game at the MGM, was walking through the MGM this evening, and SD is GONE! We cannot assume that the MGM will be interested in fixing it and putting it back on the floor now that it’s off. On the contrary, it’s had so much trouble the last couple of months that I doubt that ... MGM, will be in any hurry to get it fixed and back on the floor."

I know that most SD players here do it at The D, but now many MGM players are planning to hit The D, too. I know I will when I get there.

For many, I'm sure. But I walk past Fortune Cup without stopping.

I'm surprised if lasted as long as it did. I played it many times, and drink service wasn't that good when I was there. On the other hand, the one at the D had great drink service and always lots of fun. But that may be the difference between strip and downtown. Strip-quiet and reserved. Downtown-loud and boisterous.

And the one at the D is just a few steps from the bar.

I recall once before they simply moved it from the area closer to the sports/book area to another location and just didn’t tell anyone. Word of mouth was the map. Maybe this time too? Let’s hope sonas the D only takes reservations now and those fresh from the strip are not high in the list. ;)

When I was at MGM Grand last month, the machine was on the floor but there were “out of service” plasters around the ticket/bill slots. It was fun while it lasted.

The D has a better edge now as it might be a great marketing point for bringing people in.

Not likely just moved elsewhere on the floor because it's been down for 5 weeks. There is a chance that it was pulled to be repaired, but it has been breaking down alot lately and parts are very hard to find or have to be crafted. MGM has been pretty good about trying to keep it up and running, but eventually it will be too costly or impossible to fix. Most in the FB group feel like this is that point. There has been no official word from MGM.

I was planning to visit there this next trip because they have the old school WOF. With this development, it is a certainty. Funny thing is I've been to The D twice for SD (once to just to play elsewhere and once because MGM was down) and it was down both times! LOL The hopes and heartbreaks of playing mechanical horses...

Sitting at Fortune Cup virtually isolates you from the other players; is this by design? Sitting (or standing) at Sigma Derby draws you in to the group interaction. I always thought I was a bit off for betting on mechanical horsies. Now people are changing hotels to be close to this action. Genius!

I still (very fondly) remember the SD at the Stardust...it was right at the edge of their Sports Book area, and it was immensely popular, even way back then.
When I would grow weary of playing blackjack, I would often tell my Vegas buddy, "Hey - let's go play that horse-racing game!"... and it would always end up becoming a party atmosphere there.

I'm sure that there's some sort of psychological reason for why this old-tech machine is so appealing to so many... but I can't fathom what that would be.

You could bet a quarter and win 50$ perhaps? And someone always ends up playing the announcer calling the race. And there is a possibility of 8 semi-drunken people and a crowd behind them becoming one in yelling at a plastic jockey and his/her mighty steed to “pick it up”? Not sure how psychological but lots of fun.
(and with only 12 seats we have never had a problem sharing a “terminal” between two people and getting drink service without a hassle.)

Not sure why the sigma at mgm is seemingly so troublesome and broken all the time when the one at the D probably sees twice as much use and is rarely out of order.

I don’t care if they bring the sigma back to MGM. There’s not any excitement for me on their gambling floor for some reason. I only do pass through gambling there since the Lion’s Share is gone. And the real live lions are gone too.

And the old Stardust had TWO of them! Most definitely a party atmosphere on a busy evening!
