This is a one night stay (last night of our trip) for my adult son and I after 4 nights on the strip. We first booked the DTG because we have stayed there four times; the rooms were spotless and we loved it. Then we saw the GN was advertising "no resort fees" which brought the Carson rooms to the exact same price as DTG so we thought we'd try it for a change of scenery, as well as GN offering free printing of boarding passes and buy 1/get 1 buffet. My son would literally spend an hour tops at the pool and he does like aquariums, but on the other hand I might be just standing around and unable to find a chair.

For anyone who has stayed at both, are the Carson rooms just as nice as the Grand?

Does the GN have a long, slow check in line? I assume they would charge for early check in because they gouge for everything else.

Gambling is not an issue - we don't get comped a thing.

Should we stick with the Grand that we know and love or switch it up to stay at the Nugget?

I would definitely recommend the Golden Nugget over DTG. I was not real impressed with the Grand during my one might there a few years ago. It wasn't bad, just unremarkable. Golden Nugget offers superior resort and better location.

Thanks for replying. We have been completely satisfied with our DTG rooms.

Do you remember long check-in lines at the GN?

The lines vary, I've seen only a few waiting to check in, and I've seen 50 people in line. The Rush Tower has it's own check in, but it's not always open, when it is I would assume it makes the regular check in line smaller. We pay for VIP check in, it's $50 but it's nice to be checked in within 5 minutes or less, and normally they can accommodate any requests as far as "high up - away from the bands". We check in early around 8am, and only once did we have to wait until the late afternoon for our room using VIP. In the past when we didn't pay extra for VIP check in, they have never charged us to check in early. I'm unsure if the Carson Tower still has it's own check in, it's been years since I've walked over to that side of the hotel.
The buffet is good with the BOGO but I wouldn't pay full price for it. Enjoy your trip!!
