We were at a hotel in the Caribbean once and we had money stolen from our room safe on two separate days. I was thinking about using the safety deposit boxes available (we are staying at the D, I'm assuming they have them?) but I'm wondering if they are any safer? As long as someone, even management has a key, my money wouldn't be any safer. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I have never had a problem using the in-room safes in as Vegas. I have also used the safety deposit boxes in Las Vegas when most rooms did not have safes.

This is just my guess, but I would expect the safety deposit boxes to be a little safer if for no other reason than they are probably covered by surveillance cameras.

I've only used hotel safe deposit boxes a couple of times in Vegas.....back when Harrahs was the Holiday Casino and they had no in room safes. Using in room safes all over Vegas, luckily I've never had an issue except for the idiot before me locking the safe when leaving. That happens all the time.

That said, to me, using a hotel safe deposit box is a PITA, but if you feel your valuables are safer there, go for it.

I have used room safes for years, never had any problems. Have had to use Safety Deposit boxes several years ago, seemed like a real pain.

    Depends what you are storing.
I can image if storing your cash it could be an inconvenience to get to the box multiple times a day as opposed to just going to ones room.

Seems like this was in another thread a few days ago.

How much money or stuff are we talking about?

We stopped using safes a few years ago and usually have to ipads, a laptop and a few thousand in our room. We do put out the DoNotDisturb sign that severely limits access to our room.

I've used both the safety deposit box and MC and the in room safe, never had an issue with either.

How are safe deposit boxes typically accessed? I understand they are in the casino cage area, but in the public area or behind the cage?

The ones at the old Harrahs (Holiday Casino) weren't in the casino cage. They were back by the reservations desk in a little room behind the counter. You had to get an employee to let you behind there to access whatever you wanted to either leave or pull out of the box.

This would be for cash, I will have a mini laptop in there also but I'm more concerned about the cash. When we had it stolen before, the first day it was just a around 50.00 from our folded up bundle of bills and we though maybe we miscalculated what we spent but we made note of what we had left and the next day, a few more bills were missing. We went down and talked to the manager and she was naturally upset. She said the only ones who would have key access would be management and they worked with us to try to figure out how it happened. Nothing could be solved and we were given vouchers for a future stay but of course we haven't felt safe with hotel safes since. I would agree it's going to be inconvenient to keep going to the hotel desk safety deposit box but I just can't figure out if it would be any safer.
Good point about the surveillance cameras.

Many thousands of people use hotel safes in Vegas every day, with no problems. 5 and 6 figure amounts, no issues. Unless you have a very significant amount of cash that you want placing in a (possibly) more secure location, just put it in the safe and stop worrying.
