Roger Thomas, Steve Wynn's longtime designer, is retiring. His last work will be the new convention space at Wynn. I sure hope there is someone waiting that has his vision for design because he has produced some of the most beautiful hotel designs I have ever seen.

He actually retired at the end of last year. He produced some designs for the room remodels that were to take place this year but they were rejected and Tom Lenahan is now in charge.

Well that sucks. Everyone (including myself until I learned the truth) would always say how much they loved Steve Wynn's flair for design but it was always Roger that created Wynn and Encore.

    .

If you enjoy his work, Roger Thomas has an informative website about his design work along with videos, collections and information on his career.

    Here's a link for exploring:

    https://therogerthomascollection.com/collection-overview/

There's also some recent interviews with him on the web and I read one in March of this year.
He's living in Venice, working on photography along with adding content to his website in the link above.

    A talented designer, for sure.

A not well known fact. Thomas is gay and his was the very first wedding that took place at the Wynn Chapel. Best man was Steve Wynn.

He came out shortly after he began work on Wynn. A fascinating quote he made about it; "Authenticity in life begets authenticity in art".

There's a possibly-apocryphal story about his design of the Mirage -- it originally included a number of trees with hand-carved wooden leaves. People were constantly stealing them, and they had to keep remaking and replacing them. Roger apologized to Steve, whose response was along the lines of, "Roger, if people are stealing them, that means you made something worth stealing". Regardless of legacies, they definitely made a lot of history in the field of hotel design. People often talk about Wynn/Encore as being a non-themed resort, but I think it's Roger Thomas-themed.

He certainly knew what he was doing and left his mark all over Vegas. There is something indescribable that just looks “right” about the sight lines in Wynn properties and I suspect he is responsible. Not surprised he is calling it quits after working w Steve Wynn for so long.

Even if he worked for free, I'm not sure I could afford him.

I guarantee you there'd be no vinyl, laminate or builder grade anything on his projects!

It'd be fascinating to see some of those designs and why they were rejected.
