I stayed at the Rio for two nights last year, both comped. I'm female and was traveling alone. I tried the $20 at check in and was upgraded to a recently renovated Premium Samba Strip View King on a high floor. At the time, they weren't all that common, and it really made a difference getting a recently renovated room. They were much nicer than the older, musty smelling rooms. It was well worth the $20.

The Samba rooms are nice and they still aren't all that common as they haven't done any more rooms since they initially did the Sambas. Defintely worth the sandwich, I enjoy the Rio but their rooms desperately need renovating/updating.

I extended my Vegas stay by one night last week in order to see a concert, so we stayed at Rio. Got a peeping Tom room. Didn't bother with a sandwich since we were only there for the 1 night. Last I heard was that the Rio was on the CET chopping block, so I wouldn't expect many more renovates with the rooms.

Those rooms are creepy, I can't believe someone designed them that way and that corporate signed off on that design. Weird. I always stay in the Ipanema tower but those rooms are getting old and run down. CET is definitely focused on the strip so I wouldn't be surprised to see Rio sold as part of their bankruptcy. That would be a shame, I like the place overall and I like being off the strip but only a 5 minute shuttle ride from it. Gold Coast next door for some cheap gambling. Palms across the street. They just need an owner that will stick a little money into the place.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. The sandwich always works for me here.

We'll be going there in March of 16. So you're saying that even though all the rooms are suites, some are much nicer than others and the $20 sandwich is worth a try? Now I'm wondering if there even will be a Rio in 2016!

    Rio room upgrade?

So we're booked at the Rio this coming weekend (Friday-Monday)..
Comped, in a "Deluxe Strip View Suite"; Now I'm ASSUMING it's in the Masquerade Tower, but it could be the Ipanema Tower..
For a $20 upgrade, what should I ask for? (I doubt I'll get a Masquerade Suite; and I looked at the "Samba" suite and it looked like the room we had in the Masquerade Tower a few years ago)
If this is in the wrong section, mods please move it.
    Thanks!

Don't sell yourself short. I upgraded to the masquerade suite with the tip on the Friday after thanksgiving. I asked for something with more space than the room I had. The guy I had really wanted the tip, so that helped.

Okay did the folded 20 each of my last 2 trips in 2015. The first folded 20 I handed with my card I was working with an elderly person at the counter and asked for one of their remodeled nicer rooms. I got nothing but an old worn out room with a view of the roof and pipes. The second time last Nov I checked in with a younger person at the counter and got a remodeled room in the Ipanema tower that was a nice design and great view. She even sent me a letter with the cleaning crew hoping I was enjoying my room. Not saying senior staff won't help just saying what happened to me.

Did the oldster keep the $20? there's an unwritten rule that if you don't help, you return the money. Would be as bad as if you grabbed your 20 after you were upgraded!

We did this last year for MM........with sort of mixed results.

We were offered a suite for a discounted price, I think it was an additional $20/night vs. $100/night according to the woman at check in. We went for it, but our suite, which was a suite by definition only was on the 4th floor facing the parking structure. It was sort of a dump, well worn, where the frij should have been in the bar was just a hole, arms on the couches and chairs were thread bare, and just overall kinda' haggard.

Nice having two televisons and a separate bedroom and two bathrooms though. They brought us a replacement frij after we called the desk.

I still think it was worth the extra twenty per night for the five nights we were there.....actually not sure the twenty at check in was needed.....there might have been trickery :hmmm:

So.....after all that blathering......I wouldn't bother doing anything but asking nicely for an upgrade for just a single night.

Staying at Rio this summer in June during WSOP (figured it would be easiest since I am playing in WSOP). Going to try the $20 sammich trick and see how it goes. Will report back in a few months :)

I am staying for 6 nights at the Rio and 5 of them are comped. Does anybody know if the $20 trick would work there to get me an upgrade and if so what should I ask for?

since you're staying almost a week I would slip a $50 instead and ask for the "biggest room available."

$20 is usually for short stays. Good luck and please report back with your experience.

I did it for a three-night stay several years ago... got me into the Ipanema Tower... not sure if that's an "upgrade" or not, but it was supposed to be way-back when...
Front desk guy did ask me where I'd learned about the $20 trick & I told him "VMB", (and he knew what "VMB" was).

Low roller here. Staying at the Rio 5 nights comped in February. Im trying to get a upgrade to a nicer room, do you think 40 dollar trick would work or start with a 50 dollar bill? Thanks
