Rio, Harrah's, The Mirage, or Venetian?

I'd probably go with Mirage over Harrahs (I am discounting Venetian based on what you said). If it was just me I'd stay at Harrahs but because of the occasion I'd say a nice room at Mirage is better. Look at that the Tower Suites for sure, they are often available at a decent price. Mirage has a bit more of an 'iconic' Vegas reputation too imo.

Like you say, Rio is out of the question, only because it's off Strip and you will be too seperated from each other.

Harrah's is my favorite resort to stay, because of it's price and location on the Strip and I enjoy staying and playing there. It's also close to Venetian.

BUT... Mirage!! Wow!! So beautiful and grand, compared to Harrah's! If I could afford it, I would certainly be staying there! It's across the Street from Venetian and "only" $70 more than Harrah's! But not sure if you can convince your parents of this, because they sound the same as mine, they don't want to be a burden or you to spend too much money on them. I think a white lie is in place here though ;).

Both are practical and well within walking distance
Ask the folks if they are wanting to walk the strip:
    Walking: Harrahs
    Not walking: Mirage
Mirage - I think for your folks, seems more swanky, classy, old school cool
Harrahs - I like for proximity of walking the strip and like gs32794 said above there is a great shortcut to Venetian
It's also a little more saucy
Both are great picks in various ways
    Still probably Mirage
    On a side note:

Tell them you'll do an excursion to Rio for the day, evening or a few hours with them to get the ya ya's out. Great Vista on the Rio Voo Doo top deck!

Did you try to log into their TR account (or let them do it themselves) and check the Book Online calendar?

I am asking because TR seems to give comp rooms to anyone who has a card at the moment. No matter how minimal the play history is.

I checked with accounts of my brother and his wife who I took to Vegas once 3-4 years ago and they played maybe 300 coin in during their whole trip and never again. And both get up to 5 comped nights at several TR properties. Not as an offer, just by booking with the calendar

So it might be worth trying

So for $650 the plan would be ideal, but he doesnt want you to spend more than $600. That's $50 bucks... just tell him it was $600 on the dot and eat the last $50. That's how I'd do this.

That makes sense too. I will be over their house tomorrow, where we will finalize it all. So I will try to see if he has wiggle room on leaving the Rio. I will tell him my "vegas site" said to stay away, for the most part, lol.

Those are both good ideas. I did not know about the hidden area. I think Harrah's might have the slight lead now. And the Palazzo idea isn't bad. But they know it wouldn't be cheap once they step foot in the room, lol.

Hm, never looked at TI. But for now, I think it's between Mirage and Harrahs, with Harrahs a slight advantage.

I will take note now of the Tower King. If I put them at the Mirage, I did see a youtube video of how small the regular bathrooms are, yikes!

That isn't a bad idea either. Thanks!

That is true. That makes this decision tougher, but thanks for the input :)

Thanks for the input. It really seems like I can't go wrong with either one.

As I was reading your post, I was like cool, it will probably be the harrah's for them. But then you made it tougher :p But it seems like I can't go wrong with either one. So thanks for the input too :)

That's a good point/idea, and wow, great picture :) Thanks for the input!

I think the price of $250 was their price. My price came to almost 300. Despite having 2 of the 3 nights comped, due to resort fees and the $140 for one night.

    Thanks for the idea though!

I don't think it's the $600+ price tag. Their quote was

"we don't spend much time in the room (no jokes now, lol), so it would be a waste of money for you to spend that much money when there are options for half that price and cheaper"

So my main dilemma was on whether or not to allow them to stay at the Rio, and if not, the pros/cons of Harrah's and Mirage.

From what you say, I think they'd actually enjoy Harrah's more than any of the other properties.

They don't spend much time in the room. Which means they're out and about.

Harrah's has Big Elvis and the Dueling Pianos right in their lounge. Carnival Court is right outside. Cut thru Linq and there's the Promenade. Easy access to Flamingo to take a stroll thru the outside Flamingo gardens. And on the other side of Harrah's is Casino Royale, another easy access casino.

Mirage is nice. But it's not as nice as it once was. With all the "lushness" long removed, I find it pretty sterile and without the "happening" vibe of the CR to Flamingo spread.

It seems like they'd prefer more walkable action and activities over a more upscale room. You could always get them a Valley Tower room at Harrah's or probably get them upgraded to one at check-in playing the anniversary card.

And really, the most special thing you can do for them is to give them what they want, not what you or other think they should have.

Thanks! This post really helped seal the deal. My mother loves Elvis stuff, so that put it over. I did not know it had that. So, Harrahs is booked :) Thanks to you and everyone else for the help!

Have all you guys dogging the Rio actually stayed there?!? The one time I stayed there (for logistic reasons) I didn't think it was bad at all just too far away. I'd put it on a level with Bally's (pre-recent renovations) but I liked it more for size of the casino and room layout. The room we had was definitely a "suite" and was pretty big. It has a large L shaped sectional on one end, and a separate hallway (not entryway) with closets and dressing table leading to the bathroom. Being a CET person I'd stay there again in a heartbeat if it were on the strip over most CET props except Caesars and maybe Paris (PH is ok but I just don't dig the vibe there).

I agree with others though that Mirage is your best bet after Venetian. It's certainly nicer than Rio or Harrahs.

Good call, this was the 2nd best choice after them staying at Venetian. Since they don't care about a high end hotel, no reason to spend more money and put them further away by going with Mirage.

Sorry I am a bit late to this party, but was wondering if you have already come to a final conclusion that your parents agree with?

The reason I am asking is because I have a different take on the Rio. I love it there! The rooms, the vibe! It is the place we almost always stay! (Unless I am solo, then I try different places sometimes) The main negative about the Rio is the location, along with the fact that they don't have the free shuttle to the strip anymore. However, if you happen to have a car, it is the perfect place to stay! If your father still has his heart set on the Rio, then I would let them stick with the Rio and just work things out around that. Maybe they need that much space! LOL! I can go on with more positives about the Rio, but I won't do that now, just in case the final decision has been made.

However, if your parents have agreed to stay at one of the other places and are happy with that, then forget everything I just said! :D

Hope you all have a great trip!!!
