    My Trip Report

I have been looking thorough my TR's and I realised that I never put a TR on here for my first trip to Vegas, one reason is that I only joined the message board the year after my first trip. It was October 2008 when I embarked on my first trip across the pond with Mrs Stig. The only reason that we had chosen Las Vegas was because of our love of a certain tv show set in Vegas. So you can say CSI brought us to Vegas, we flew from Manchester to Las Vegas via Philadelphia with US Airways. The flight was good going over to Philly and the we connected on to our Vegas flight. I remember the weather not being good that day and we were delayed leaving Philly about an hour late.

We arrived in Vegas and it's dark and all we could see was the Strip all lit up, after getting through immigration and getting our bags we went to where we had to pick up the shuttle bus. You learn from your first visit and this was my first lesson, I never did the shuttle bus again. We were staying at Desert Rose Resort as it fitted the budget and was close to the Strip. It was getting on for about 10pm when we checked in and got to our room. Mrs Stig decided she was going to bed, I decided I was going out. My first time in Vegas and my first time in America. I got changed and just before I left she says to me.

    "Don't get lost."

We are pretty much opposite the MGM, I was sure I could find my way back. I walked out and I was on Tropicana Ave and I finally ended up in NYNY. I walked in and I'm in awe of what I'm seeing, as I go down the escalator I look over the casino and cant believe what I'm looking at. I have a walk around for a while just taking it all in. I finally find a bar and I have my first drinks in Vegas. I stayed out till about midnight before making my way back to Desert Rose.

We were awake fairly early next morning and went for breakfast, Desert Rose did have breakfast included in the price. It was only a light type of breakfast but it was filling enough. This was our full first day and we set off and started on the west side of the Strip. First it was NYNY and then a walk north as we visited each casino, I remember getting to Caesars Palace and we walked through the casino and in to the Forum Shops. As we walked in to the shopping area, Mrs Stig said and I'm not making this up.

"It's gone a bit dull outside."

I then mentioned we were still indoors and the sky she could see was false. We carried on northwards and of course I made that stupid statement that many first timers in Vegas have made.

"The Stratosphere doesn't look too far away from here."

We walked and walked and walked a bit more before reaching the Stratosphere, once there we decided to go to the top of the tower and paid for rides before we went up. Once up there Mrs Stig had a change of heart about the rides after seeing on of them dangle over the edge of the tower. I went on them no problem and used her ticket as well. After leaving the Stratosphere we proceeded to walk back down the Strip on the east side. It seemed a quicker walk back though and when we got back to Desert Rose we got showered changed and back out for the night.

We wanedt to go and see shows that week and the first show that we saw was Penn & Teller, she had never heard of them but she did enjoy the show. Our first big headliner that week was Elton John, we went in to Caesars and I suggested going to see what tickets they had and we ended up on the balcony. Mrs Stig was so happy to watch him. The other show that we went to see was Tom Jones, she wanted to go and watch the Legends show but I noticed that Tom Jones was starting his residency at MGM on our last night in Vegas. So we got tickets for Sir Tom and it was in the theatre where David Copperfield performs now.

I remember during the show a part of the drum broke, so while they were fixing it Tom Jones tells a joke.

A guy goes to the doctors and he tells the doctor he has a very personal problem with his penis and that it is embarrassing, the doctor tells him that he doesn't need to be embarrassed and he has seen most things. The guy drops his trousers and the doctor bursts out laughing. After he composes himself the doctor apologises and said he should be more professional, he then asks the guy how big does it get when he's aroused. The guy replies.

    "I am aroused."

I also remember from that week that we went on the rollercoaster at NYNY, Mrs Stig had her eyes closed all the way around. We went to Madame Tussauds as well and we opted for the horror thing that they had there at that time. You basically have people jumping out at you and banging on walls. I remember going to places that are no longer there, the original O'Shea's and Bill's Gambling Hall. That trip certainly set me off on a path and after 26 more trips I still feel the need to go back as much as I can.

Nice report. My first trip to Vegas had an evening arrival also. Love approaching Vegas at night. Whenever I bemoan the fact that I'm "losing a day" by arriving at night, I remember the approach. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks @The Stig, I love hearing about first trips to Vegas! So true about the misperception that The Stratosphere is close enough to easily walk to. Been there, done that. Good times!

First impressions are just the best thing. I only made the shuttle mistake once, myself. Never again!

Nice report. We made the same mistake our first trip in 1999 with taking a shuttle. We stayed at the Golden Nugget but the first two stops were on the north strip. I remember looking at the Westward Ho thinking my god what a dump. I remember we took a bus from downtown to Mandalay Bay and worked our way back hitting all the casinos. We made it too Treasure Island before the wife was done.
